mater 00:06:11.900 --> 00:06:15.460 and the arachnoid mater formed those meninges 00:06:15.460 --> 00:06:18.820 and that the blood brain barrier existed 00:06:18.820 --> 00:06:22.500 to keep certain pathogens and toxins out. 00:06:22.500 --> 00:06:25.100 Although I know things like cysts can get into the brain 00:06:25.100 --> 00:06:27.220 and there's certainly a pathogen. 00:06:27.220 --> 00:12:59.420 The lungs and the brain happen to be the best equipped 00:12:59.420 --> 00:13:05.160 with enzymes that destroy serotonin. 00:13:05.160 --> 00:13:10.220 Monoamine oxidase is very --> 00:15:17.380 Is that lipid membrane, is that a reality? 00:15:17.380 --> 00:15:21.540 Or is that, again, another very fluid relationship 00:15:21.540 --> 00:15:22.960 with the cell? 00:15:22.960 --> 00:15:29.060 - In an old medical book from the early 19th century, 00:15:29.060 --> 00:15:34.060 I saw that the treatment for a burn or an ulcer 00:15:34.260 --> 00:15:39.260 to close up the weeping wound on the surface of the body, 00:15:39.260 --> 00:15:42.060 they used osmic acid, 00:15:42.060 --> 00:15:51.900 osmium tetroxide solution. 00:15:51.900 --> 00:15:56.900 And that was to create what they called a false membrane. 00:15:56.900 --> 00:15:58.420 - Oh, like an eschar. 00:15:58.420 --> 00:16:00.500 - Yeah, it's first use in medicine. 00:16:00.500 --> 00:16:04.340 It was
