# Mixed-license distribution

This repository is a collection of original AILM material, released under two
different licenses depending on its kind, plus third-party-derived data
governed by its own upstream terms. No single license covers the whole
distribution, and neither of the two AILM licenses below relicenses the
third-party material.

## Original AILM source code — MIT License

Unless a file says otherwise, the original AILM source code — the contents of
`src/` (including the GNN conformance-checking code in `src/ailm/gnn/`),
`scripts/`, `tests/`, and the Lean formalization in `formal/` — is licensed
under the MIT License:

> Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy
> of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), to
> deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the
> rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or
> sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is
> furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:
>
> The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in
> all copies or substantial portions of the Software.
>
> THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR
> IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY,
> FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE

> IN THE SOFTWARE.

The MIT grant above covers the *code itself* — the logic that builds and runs
the models. It does not extend to the vendored data those programs read (see
below), and it does not by itself make the packaged distribution safe for
unrestricted commercial use; see "Commercial-use boundary".

## Original AILM manuscript, documentation, figures, and authored data — CC BY-SA 4.0

Unless a file says otherwise, the original AILM manuscript, documentation, and
figures, and AILM-authored data (including the curated Stage 1 evaluation
fixture, the generated corpus-statistics artifacts under `vendor/` that are
AILM's own transformation rather than a third party's per the component table
below, and the GNN model specifications in `gnn/` — text-based notation
documents, distinct from the conformance-checking *code* that reads them in
`src/ailm/gnn/`) are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike
4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0):

https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/

## Third-party material

The repository also contains artifacts governed by narrower third-party terms.
Those terms continue to apply to the material they cover; neither AILM license
above relicenses them.

## Commercial-use boundary

The repository and its Python wheel, as distributed with the vendored data,
must not be represented as an unrestricted commercial-use distribution — this
is true regardless of the MIT code license above, because the boundary comes
from the vendored *data*, not from AILM's own code:

- the NLTK Brown Corpus package is supplied for non-commercial purposes, and
  committed `vendor/brown_*.json` artifacts derive from it;
- `vendor/ud_czech_case_counts.json` derives from UD Czech-PDTC, licensed
  CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.

Users contemplating commercial use must obtain any necessary permissions or use
a distribution from which restricted data has been lawfully replaced or
excluded. Whether a particular use or derived aggregate falls within copyright,
database-right, or an exception is jurisdiction- and use-specific; this file does
not make that determination.
