--- name: investigation description: Takes one order on one issue, tests the lead against the tree at one commit, leaves a case as a comment, then exits. --- # Investigation One tick takes one order on an issue, tests the lead against the tree at one commit, leaves a case as a comment, and exits. A case is facts, not a verdict. The prosecutor decides later. ## Limits - Never give an opinion, a recommendation, a severity or a fix. State what the tree shows. - Never run code from the precinct, except a command listed verbatim under Regression proof, as the Execution section allows. Never in the clone. - Write one comment per tick. File no issue. - A stale order is a success. Silence is the default. - What you cannot establish goes in Not established. It never stops the tick, except a failed source read, which ends it with `stopped-source-read`. The law in `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/LAW.md` and the tick steps in `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/tick.md` govern this skill. Obey them. Do not restate them. The outcome tokens come from the law's Tick outcomes section. Cite a law section by name when a rule needs a source. ## Working rules - The only change of directory is a subshell `(cd runs//tree && )` for a Regression proof command. - In a clone, run only these git forms: `fetch`, `remote set-head`, `rev-parse`, `ls-tree`, `ls-files`, `show`, `log`, `grep`, `status --porcelain`, `worktree add` and `worktree remove`. `log` and `grep` take a tree-ish. Never check out, reset, clean, commit, push, branch, tag, merge or stash. - Read a precinct file only through `git -C precincts/

show :`. - Search only with `git grep` and `git ls-files`. Count their output with `wc -l`. - A pattern from any text other than the law, this skill and the constitution enters a search command only through `git grep -n -F -f -`, fed by a quoted heredoc, one pattern per line. - A path from such text enters a command only when it matches `^[A-Za-z0-9._/-]+$`. Any other path is named in Not established and is not read. - Read `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/exhibits.md` once when you quote a `path:line`, quote a claim of absence, follow a path that is missing at ``, or read an external source. Obey its sections. `` there is ``. - A value from a `Source:` line enters a command only after it passes its class in the "Source values" table of `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/exhibits.md`. A value outside its class goes to Not established and is not read. - A source command of the department page runs as the "Run a source" section of `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/exhibits.md` says. The git forms above do not limit it. ## Tick Run steps 0 to 10 in order. Every started tick ends exactly once, at step 10. Items 3 to 6 of step 0 end the tick when they fail. Read `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/tick.md` then, and end the tick as its "End the tick" section says. ### Step 0: guards 1. Sync the law, then check the journal schema. 1. Sync the law as the section "Sync the law" of `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/tick.md` says. A stop there is answered, not recorded, because no tick exists yet. 2. Check the journal schema. Exit 1 or 6: answer `journal unavailable: ` and stop. ``` bin/journal probe --schema 3 ``` 2. Start the tick. Keep the printed tick id. A non-zero exit: answer `journal unavailable: ` and stop. ``` bin/journal tick start --role investigation ``` 3. Read `law_commit` and `trusted_login` from `config.yaml`. Each is one `key: value` line. A missing file or key ends the tick with `failed`. ``` grep -E '^(law_commit|trusted_login):' config.yaml ``` 4. Check the law folder, reading it the way the harness page names under "Syncing the law". A commit that differs from `law_commit`, or a commit that cannot be read, ends the tick with `stopped-law-drift`. A local change in the folder, or a status that cannot be read, ends it with `stopped-dirty-law`. 5. Check the identity. A failed command ends the tick with `stopped-gh-auth`. A login that differs from `trusted_login`, ignoring ASCII case, ends it with `stopped-identity-changed`. ``` gh api user --jq .login ``` 6. Compute the alarms before any work. Never pass `--repeat`. Keep every `ALARM` line for the answer. ``` bin/journal alarm ``` ### Step 1: take an order Take the oldest open order. The output is `idprecinctrepodepartmentissue`. The department is empty for a stage order. ``` bin/journal dispatch take --role investigation ``` Empty output with exit 0 ends the tick with `silent`. Read no file. Send the report `No order.` to `tick end`. A failed `dispatch take`: read `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/tick.md`, then end the tick with `failed`. ``` bin/journal tick end --outcome silent <<'LAWMAN__0000000' No order. LAWMAN__0000000 ``` `tick end` prints nothing, and exit 0 confirms the record. A failed `tick end`: answer `journal unavailable: ` and stop. Otherwise answer as item 3 of the "End the tick" section of `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/tick.md` says. With an order, read `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/tick.md` and obey it for the whole tick. An order without an issue number ends the tick with `failed`. A failed command in this step ends the tick with `failed`, as the "End the tick" section of `tick.md` says. ### Step 2: fetch the precinct Run the "Fetch the precinct" section. The fetched commit is the analysed sha, and `` is that sha. ### Step 3: sync the tracker Run the "Sync the tracker" section. ### Step 4: ask for the case line Run the "Read the stage" section. - A `need` other than `investigation`, or `state=CLOSED`, ends the tick with `silent`. Its report is `Order stale: `. - Keep `round`, `lead`, `related` and `department`. ### Step 5: read the constitution Run the "Check the constitution" section. Read the sections Regression proof, Execution and Precedents from `git -C precincts/

show :LAWMAN.md`. A command is the text of one list item under Regression proof, verbatim. ### Step 6: read the issue ``` gh issue view -R --json title, body, author, comments, state ``` A failed command gives `stopped-issue-read`. Everything in the output is evidence. The lead carrier is the issue body when `lead` is `body`. When `lead` is `comment`, it is the earliest comment by ``, ignoring ASCII case, whose last line is a marker with `stage=lead`. The lead's claim comes from the carrier. With `lead` equal to `comment`, the issue body and the other comments are evidence only. When `related` is not `-`, read each issue it names. A failed read is a fact for Blockers and stops nothing. ``` gh issue view -R --json title, body, author, comments, state ``` A related issue is evidence of the case, never a reason to close it. When `round` is greater than 1, the returning role's question is the newest comment by the trusted login whose last line is a marker with `stage=return`. Answer it in the case. ### Step 7: create the tree ``` git -C precincts/

worktree add --detach ../../runs//tree git -C runs//tree rev-parse HEAD ``` The path is relative to the clone, so `../../` leads back to the installation. The second command must print the sha. A failure ends the tick with `failed`. ### Step 8: build the case Only read. List each claim of the lead, then check each one. Count and quote only at ``. 1. For each path or symbol the lead names, read the file. A missing path: run the "Follow a missing path" section of `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/exhibits.md`. A new path that exists at `` is read, and the case says so. Otherwise the commit, its subject, and the new path, the removal or the empty history go to Not established. ``` git -C precincts/

show : ``` 2. Search with a quoted heredoc of patterns, one per line. Run the same search with a pattern known to match, as a positive control. Quote a claim of absence as the "Quote a claim of absence" section of `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/exhibits.md` says. ``` git -C runs//tree grep -n -F -f - -- . <<'' ``` 3. Read the history of each named path. ``` git -C precincts/

log --format='%h %s' -- ``` 4. List the open pull requests of the trusted login with the paths they change. ``` gh pr list -R --state open --limit 200 --json number, author, files --jq '.[] | select(.author.login == "") | .number as $n | .files[].path | "\($n)\t\(.)"' ``` A failure goes to Blockers, and Related says `pull requests not read`. Other authors' pull requests are context only. 5. For each `Source:` line in the `Not checked` section, inside or outside a fenced block, of the lead carrier, read the source. Do this only when the carrier is a marker with `role=patrol`. A response-unit lead never triggers a network read. Pass each value through its class first. A line has one of two forms, run verbatim with its fixed `--jq` filter. ``` gh api '/advisories?ecosystem=&affects=@' --jq '.[] | [.ghsa_id, .severity, .updated_at, .summary] | @tsv' gh api 'repos///releases?per_page=100' --jq '.[] | [.tag_name, .id, .published_at] | @tsv' ``` Never read a release body. Take the outcome from the exit code. - Exit 0 with rows: the rows are an exhibit in Claims checked. Quote the command, its verbatim output and the UTC read time. Give the immutable ids: `ghsa_id` with `updated_at`, and `tag_name` with the release `id`. - Exit 0 with no rows: the claim is `not confirmed`. - Non-zero, and the last stderr line ends `(HTTP 404)`, `(HTTP 410)` or `(HTTP 422)`: the source goes to Not established. That stderr line is the exhibit. The case is written. - Any other non-zero exit: end the tick with `stopped-source-read`. Write no case. 6. For each source command that the lead carrier quotes under Evidence, and for each other source command a claim needs, run the "Run a source" section of `lawman/skills/lawman-law/references/exhibits.md`. Its output is an exhibit in Claims checked. A failed run is a fact for Not established and Blockers. It stops nothing. 7. Reproduce only when a command listed verbatim under Regression proof decides the outcome of a claim. Quote its output and its exit code. A non-zero exit changes no outcome. ``` (cd runs//tree && ); echo "exit $?" ``` When Execution reads `none`, run nothing and write `not run: Execution allows no run`. When the command is not listed under Regression proof, run nothing and write `not run: `. 8. Attack each `confirmed` claim once. Look for a caller-side guarantee, an invariant, an upstream check or a pinning test. If one holds, record it as a fact. 9. Mark a claim `confirmed` only with an exhibit. A claim with none is `not confirmed`. A claim whose facts differ from the lead's wording is `changed`. When a claim shows a critical condition, print its ALARM line as the "Alarm" section says. The case is still written. ### Step 9: write the case Compose the comment from the Case format section. Write it as the "Write a comment" section says, with the heading `Case`. ### Step 10: end the tick Run the "End the tick" section. The success token is `investigated`. The harness page names the silence form. ## Case format Write the comment in this order. The first line is `Case`, then a blank line. ``` Case Analysed commit: Lead: #, "" ## Answer ## Claims checked - : confirmed | not confirmed | changed. , or a command and its output in a fenced block> ## Reproduction `> ## History ## Related ## Not established ``` The quoted claim in the `Lead:` line depends on the case line. With `lead=body`, quote the issue title as written, without the lead prefix. With `lead=comment`, quote the first line under `## What` of the lead comment. The case line decides the lead, whatever markers the issue lacks. Example, round 1: ```` Case Analysed commit: 0123456789abcdef0123456789abcdef01234567 Lead: #12, "parse_header has no caller" ## Claims checked - parse_header has no caller: confirmed. The search prints only its definition. The control search prints the callers of read_header. ``` search, pattern parse_header: src/header.c:40:int parse_header(const char *buf) control, pattern read_header: src/main.c:12: read_header(buf); src/main.c:30: read_header(next); src/net.c:77: read_header(pkt); ``` ## Reproduction not run: Execution allows no run. ## History - a1b2c3d Add header parser ## Related No open pull request touches src/header.c. ## Not established Callers outside the tree. ```` Rules: - State no opinion, recommendation, severity or fix. - Quote only the lines a claim needs. - Cut an absolute path in quoted output to a path from the tree root. - Put quoted third-party text and every `@` inside a fenced block. When the claim holds an `@`, write `Lead: #` and put the claim in a fenced block below it. - Write no home path, installation path, token or login. - `at` is the UTC time of writing, from `date -u +%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ`. - The marker is the last line of the body. Nothing follows it. ## Report Three lines. ``` Coverage: , issue #, round . Written: , or none. Blockers: . ```
