The stabilization of the Weimar Republic has become a fleeting dream.
Four years of fragile consensus between the national conservative DNVP and the Catholic Zentrum were replaced by a brief “Grand Coalition” led by Hermann Müller - however, the onset of the Great Depression shattered the last chance for parliamentary governance. Ruling by decree, the new Chancellor, Heinrich Brüning, chose to call an election after the failure of a budget vote to try to gather a majority in the Reichstag.
A “national socialist” party, which would attract the working masses away from socialism and towards the interests of the nationalist elite, had been the holy grail of the German far right since the 1890s. Their numerous predecessors, from Adolf Stoecker’s Christian-Socials to the wartime Fatherland Party, all failed, but the National Socialist German Workers’ Party aims to finish what they started. It is antisemitic, anti-socialist and anti-Versailles.
Having been focused more on rebuilding its unity and defeating internal factionalism than campaigning in the 1920s, the NSDAP now intends to roar into the political scene with full force. Still, though the conditions for its victory are there, the road will not be easy - the Nazis have to carefully balance between populist rhetoric and appeal to the industrial elite, and far from everyone in the party is convinced of the merits of electoralism.

The Weimar Republic uses a list-based proportional system, in which each 60 thousand votes equals one seat in the Reichstag. The country is divided into electoral regions and at least 30 thousand votes in at least one of the regions is necessary to qualify for the quota, but aside for that, there is no threshold for Reichstag entry.
Because the amount of votes fluctuates with voter turnout, so does the number of seats in the Reichstag. This system ensures that a large number of parties is always represented in the Reichstag and it is effectively impossible for any one party to receive a majority.
