META-K: SSBB Static Recompilation Proof of Concept Why Brawl Caps at ~25 FPS The bottleneck is architectural, not a bug. This recompiler achieves 100% native execution — zero fallback JIT, zero interpreter overhead. Every PowerPC instruction in main.dol and all 126 .rel overlays (fighters, stages, menus) is translated to native x64 at build time. But the dispatcher ceiling is hard: Metric Value Dispatcher trips/sec 2.7 million Cost per trip ~350 ns Dispatcher CPU time ~950 ms/sec (95% of a core) Game logic throughput ~25 FPS Every basic block ends with ret → dispatcher → next block. No inlining, no trace stitching, no hot/cold tiering. The AOT model trades JIT flexibility for determinism — and on a 126-overlay title like Brawl, that tax is fatal. Dolphin's JIT avoids this by compiling traces on-demand, inlining hot paths, and only paying compilation cost once per session. It adapts; this recompiler doesn't. What This Project Is A minimal, readable proof of concept for static recompilation of a complex Wii title. ~400 lines of launcher (metacompilation.py) Clean dark-blue UI (META-K branding) One-click workflow: extract → recompile → play Persistent caches: tools, modules, extracted assets Clean Assets button: removes only game data, keeps compiled module X-button handling: force-closes game + launcher cleanly Credit: by BannedPenta01 Submodules (not included in zip): lib/DolRecomp — static recompiler (PPC → C/LLVM) lib/ModernGekko — minimal Dolphin-derived runtime (Vulkan, audio, input) Status Component Works? Boot → strap → menus ✅ Character select ✅ (~25 FPS) Matches (fat module + Native REL) ⚠️ Native speed, but Kirby wedge crash (REL router null-context bug) Matches (slim module, no REL) ✅ Stable, ~25 FPS (JIT fallback) Audio, input, saves ✅ Netplay 🚫 Not tested Not a Product This is not a playable Brawl port. It's a research artifact showing: Static recompilation can fully translate a complex Wii game The dispatcher model hits a hard ceiling on overlay-heavy titles Hybrid JIT/AOT is the only path past ~25 FPS (months of work) Use Dolphin if you want 60 FPS Brawl today. Use this if you want to study static recompilation, netplay determinism, or binary translation.
