These stats are used in Byte Queue\nLimit (BQL) algorithms. The difference between these two stats tracks\nthe number of bytes currently sitting on the physical NIC. ibmvnic\nincreases the number of queued bytes though calls to\nnetdev_tx_sent_queue() in the drivers xmit function. When, VIOS reports\nthat it is done transmitting bytes, the ibmvnic device increases the\nnumber of completed bytes through calls to netdev_tx_completed_queue().\nIt is important to note that the driver batches its transmit calls and\nnum_queued is increased every time that an skb is added to the next\nbatch, not necessarily when the batch is sent to VIOS for transmission.\n\nUnlike other reset types, a NON FATAL reset will not flush the sub crq\ntx buffers. Therefore, it is possible for the batched skb array to be\npartially full. So if there is call to netdev_tx_reset_queue() when\nre-opening the device, the value of num_queued (0) would not account\nfor the skb's that are currently batched. Eventually, when the batch\nis sent to VIOS, the call to netdev_tx_completed_queue() would increase\nnum_completed to a value greater than the num_queued. This causes a\nBUG_ON crash:\n\nibmvnic 30000002: Firmware reports error, cause: adapter problem.\nStarting recovery...\nibmvnic 30000002: tx error 600\nibmvnic 30000002: tx error 600\nibmvnic 30000002: tx error 600\nibmvnic 30000002: tx error 600\n------------[ cut here ]------------\nkernel BUG at lib/dynamic_queue_limits.c:27!\nOops: Exception in kernel mode, sig: 5\n[....]\nNIP dql_completed+0x28/0x1c0\nLR ibmvnic_complete_tx.isra.0+0x23c/0x420 [ibmvnic]\nCall Trace:\nibmvnic_complete_tx.isra.0+0x3f8/0x420 [ibmvnic] (unreliable)\nibmvnic_interrupt_tx+0x40/0x70 [ibmvnic]\n__handle_irq_event_percpu+0x98/0x270\n---[ end trace ]---\n\nTherefore, do not reset the dql stats when performing a NON_FATAL reset." } ], "metrics": [ { "cvssV3_1": { "version": "3.1", "vectorString": "CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H", "baseScore": 7.5, "baseSeverity": "HIGH" }, "scenarios": [ { "lang": "en", "value": "AV:N - The faulty state is created and consumed entirely in the network TX path — bytes accounted by `ibmvnic_xmit()` for in-flight packets and completed in the `ibmvnic_interrupt_tx()` handler — so a remote peer generating sustained traffic through the virtual NIC supplies the precondition that turns an adapter reset into a panic. Consistent with other ibmvnic TX-path crash CVEs scored AV:N.\nAC:L - No race must be won and no specific memory layout is needed; any sustained TX load keeps the batched skb array (`ind_bufp`) partially full, so once a NON_FATAL reset occurs the `num_completed > num_queued` condition and the resulting BUG_ON are deterministic.\nPR:N - No credentials or local account are required — merely sending traffic to the affected interface is sufficient to keep the TX batch populated, and the reset path involves no authentication or capability check.\nUI:N - The crash occurs asynchronously in the TX-completion interrupt handler during automatic driver reset recovery; no administrator or user action is needed.\nS:U - The BUG_ON panics the kernel of the affected partition itself, with no crossing into a different security authority such as a hypervisor or peer partition.\nC:N - The defect is a byte-counter accounting mismatch caught by an explicit assertion in `dql_completed()`; no memory is read out of bounds and no kernel data is exposed to the attacker.\nI:N - Nothing is written out of bounds and no attacker-controlled data corrupts kernel state — the counters are driver-internal BQL statistics, and the assertion fires before any further processing.\nA:H - `BUG_ON()` in `dql_completed()` is reached from hard interrupt context via `ibmvnic_interrupt_tx()`, producing a kernel oops/panic (\"Oops: Exception in kernel mode, sig: 5\") that takes down the system." } ] } ], "affected": [ { "product": "Linux", "vendor": "Linux", "defaultStatus": "unaffected", "repo": "https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git", "programFiles": [ "drivers/net/ethernet/ibm/ibmvnic.c" ], "versions": [ { "version": "0d973388185d49add56b81ca82fa5e4348019df8", "lessThan": "b8aedf29db1280c83191fc9579ae605791faf97f", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "0d973388185d49add56b81ca82fa5e4348019df8", "lessThan": "f67ef8f9f6776e2b2073cad7c5cf29de850f83d7", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "0d973388185d49add56b81ca82fa5e4348019df8", "lessThan": "91a0632e73070928aafeb36b3cc676843c716931", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "0d973388185d49add56b81ca82fa5e4348019df8", "lessThan": "48538ccb825b05544ec308a509e2cc9c013402db", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" } ] }, { "product": "Linux", "vendor": "Linux", "defaultStatus": "affected", "repo": "https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git", "programFiles": [ "drivers/net/ethernet/ibm/ibmvnic.c" ], "versions": [ { "version": "5.11", "status": "affected" }, { "version": "0", "lessThan": "5.11", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "5.15.121", "lessThanOrEqual": "5.15.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.1.39", "lessThanOrEqual": "6.1.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.4.4", "lessThanOrEqual": "6.4.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.5", "lessThanOrEqual": "*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "original_commit_for_fix" } ] } ], "cpeApplicability": [ { "nodes": [ { "operator": "OR", "negate": false, "cpeMatch": [ { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "5.11", "versionEndExcluding": "5.15.121" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "5.11", "versionEndExcluding": "6.1.39" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "5.11", "versionEndExcluding": "6.4.4" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "5.11", "versionEndExcluding": "6.5" } ] } ] } ], "references": [ { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/b8aedf29db1280c83191fc9579ae605791faf97f" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/f67ef8f9f6776e2b2073cad7c5cf29de850f83d7" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/91a0632e73070928aafeb36b3cc676843c716931" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/48538ccb825b05544ec308a509e2cc9c013402db" } ], "title": "ibmvnic: Do not reset dql stats on NON_FATAL err", "x_generator": { "engine": "bippy-1.2.0" } } } }
