There is no network or remote path into any `__free(kfree)` site that can receive an error pointer.\nAC:L - Both sides of the trigger are attacker-controlled: the attacker drives system memory pressure to make `kstrdup()` in `gpiochip_dup_line_label()` return `ERR_PTR(-ENOMEM)` while repeatedly reading the debugfs file in a loop, and the resulting bad pointer value is fixed and deterministic rather than layout-dependent.\nPR:L - The kernel creates the gpio debugfs entry mode 0444 under a 0755 debugfs root, so on the many embedded, Android and industrial images that mount debugfs permissively an ordinary unprivileged local account can read it; no capability check exists on the path.\nUI:N - The attacker performs the debugfs read and the memory-pressure generation entirely on their own; no victim process, mount, or administrator action is required.\nS:U - The corruption is confined to the kernel's own slab allocator and page refcounts within the same security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.\nC:H - `kfree()` resolves the error pointer to a real populated `struct page` and either drops a refcount on an unrelated live page or splices a wild pointer onto a live slab freelist, so a subsequent allocation can hand out a pointer aliasing arbitrary kernel memory and disclose its contents.\nI:H - The same slab freelist poisoning gives a controlled kernel write when the wild pointer is later returned by `kmalloc()` and written to, and `folio_put()` on an in-use folio yields a page-level use-after-free — both are standard primitives for control-flow hijack.\nA:H - In the common case `virt_to_folio()` on `ERR_PTR(-ENOMEM)` dereferences bogus page metadata and the subsequent free corrupts allocator state, producing an immediate oops or a later panic, and it can be re-triggered on every read of the debugfs file." } ] } ], "affected": [ { "product": "Linux", "vendor": "Linux", "defaultStatus": "unaffected", "repo": "https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git", "programFiles": [ "include/linux/slab.h" ], "versions": [ { "version": "af53aaf20722d745a69a051114a1ae237f5b922e", "lessThan": "edca32f87329d6e341d2143a3b58ec254e8f6b88", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "f550466949e822afcd0b546a4fc35795930660bc", "lessThan": "946771c2a2b1150f9b7286feadc3aa1e15a1eb16", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "3c6cc62ce1265aa5623e2e1b29c0fe258bf6e232", "lessThan": "9f6eb0ab4f95240589ee85fd9886a944cd3645b2", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "54da6a0924311c7cf5015533991e44fb8eb12773", "lessThan": "ac6cf3ce9b7d12acb7b528248df5f87caa25fcdc", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "54da6a0924311c7cf5015533991e44fb8eb12773", "lessThan": "79cbe0be6c0317b215ddd8bd3e32f0afdac48543", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "54da6a0924311c7cf5015533991e44fb8eb12773", "lessThan": "cd7eb8f83fcf258f71e293f7fc52a70be8ed0128", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "6.1.79", "lessThan": "6.1.91", "status": "affected", "versionType": "semver" } ] }, { "product": "Linux", "vendor": "Linux", "defaultStatus": "affected", "repo": "https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git", "programFiles": [ "include/linux/slab.h" ], "versions": [ { "version": "6.5", "status": "affected" }, { "version": "0", "lessThan": "6.5", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.1.91", "lessThanOrEqual": "6.1.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.6.31", "lessThanOrEqual": "6.6.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.8.10", "lessThanOrEqual": "6.8.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.9", "lessThanOrEqual": "*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "original_commit_for_fix" } ] } ], "cpeApplicability": [ { "nodes": [ { "operator": "OR", "negate": false, "cpeMatch": [ { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "6.1.79", "versionEndExcluding": "6.1.91" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "6.5", "versionEndExcluding": "6.6.31" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "6.5", "versionEndExcluding": "6.8.10" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "6.5", "versionEndExcluding": "6.9" } ] } ] } ], "references": [ { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/edca32f87329d6e341d2143a3b58ec254e8f6b88" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/946771c2a2b1150f9b7286feadc3aa1e15a1eb16" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/9f6eb0ab4f95240589ee85fd9886a944cd3645b2" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/ac6cf3ce9b7d12acb7b528248df5f87caa25fcdc" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/79cbe0be6c0317b215ddd8bd3e32f0afdac48543" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/cd7eb8f83fcf258f71e293f7fc52a70be8ed0128" } ], "title": "mm/slab: make __free(kfree) accept error pointers", "x_generator": { "engine": "bippy-1.2.0" } }, "adp": [ { "metrics": [ { "other": { "type": "ssvc", "content": { "timestamp": "2024-06-06T18:34:10.099765Z", "id": "CVE-2024-36890", "options": [ { "Exploitation": "none" }, { "Automatable": "no" }, { "Technical Impact": "partial" } ], "role": "CISA Coordinator", "version": "2.0.3" } } } ], "title": "CISA ADP Vulnrichment", "providerMetadata": { "orgId": "134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0", "shortName": "CISA-ADP", "dateUpdated": "2024-06-06T18:34:28.352Z" } }, { "providerMetadata": { "orgId": "af854a3a-2127-422b-91ae-364da2661108", "shortName": "CVE", "dateUpdated": "2024-08-02T03:43:49.148Z" }, "title": "CVE Program Container", "references": [ { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/9f6eb0ab4f95240589ee85fd9886a944cd3645b2", "tags": [ "x_transferred" ] }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/ac6cf3ce9b7d12acb7b528248df5f87caa25fcdc", "tags": [ "x_transferred" ] }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/79cbe0be6c0317b215ddd8bd3e32f0afdac48543", "tags": [ "x_transferred" ] }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/cd7eb8f83fcf258f71e293f7fc52a70be8ed0128", "tags": [ "x_transferred" ] } ] } ] } }
