There is no network-facing path into fs/f2fs/inode.c.\nAC:L - The trigger is fully deterministic with no race: one dirtying operation on a read-only f2fs mount guarantees FI_DIRTY_INODE survives to f2fs_evict_inode, since sync_filesystem() is unconditionally skipped for read-only superblocks. CONFIG_F2FS_CHECK_FS turns it into a hard BUG(), but the defect is not conditional on it — default configs still WARN and free the inode with a dangling sbi->inode_list[DIRTY_META] entry.\nPR:L - An unprivileged local user with only read access to a file on a read-only f2fs mount can dirty the inode; f2fs_ioc_precache_extents() and f2fs_file_fadvise() perform no capability, ownership, or mnt_want_write check, and the __f2fs_find_entry depth-repair path needs nothing beyond stat(). Read-only f2fs volumes are routine on Android and embedded systems where any app can reach them.\nUI:N - The attacker performs the entire dirtying step alone; the eviction that fires the assertion happens during ordinary automatic system activity — volume unmount by vold/udisks2, media eject, or shutdown — rather than requiring a victim to be tricked into any action. On desktops where udisks2 permits console-user mount/unmount of removable media, the attacker controls the whole chain unaided.\nS:U - The corruption and its consequences are confined to the kernel's own security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.\nC:H - In default configurations f2fs_bug_on degrades to WARN_ON, so execution continues and f2fs_free_inode() releases the 1200-byte f2fs_inode_info while fi->gdirty_list is still linked into sbi->inode_list[DIRTY_META]; subsequent traversal of that list (f2fs_sync_inode_meta) reads through the freed, sprayable slab object. This is the same stale-gdirty_list use-after-free syzbot reported at this assertion site.\nI:H - The dangling DIRTY_META list node gives a write primitive — the next f2fs_inode_dirtied(sync=true) performs list_add_tail(), whose __list_add() writes a kernel pointer through head->prev into the freed and potentially reallocated f2fs_inode_cache object. Heap-sprayable slab corruption of this kind is exploitable for control-flow hijacking.\nA:H - With CONFIG_F2FS_CHECK_FS the f2fs_bug_on at fs/f2fs/inode.c:933 is a BUG_ON that panics the kernel mid-unmount, exactly as syzbot reported; without it the WARN_ON still panics under panic_on_warn and leaves the filesystem flagged SBI_NEED_FSCK. Either way the result is a full denial of service." } ] } ], "affected": [ { "product": "Linux", "vendor": "Linux", "defaultStatus": "unaffected", "repo":
