A malicious or compromised target — or an attacker spoofing/MITM'ing a commonly-unauthenticated iSCSI session — supplies the short page directly over the network.\nAC:L - The target simply reports page 0xb1 with a page length of 4 (total length 8), which makes vpd->len == 8 pass the `< 8` check and the read of data[8] occur deterministically on every probe/rescan. This is a real-world occurrence (qemu 2.x), requiring no timing, layout, or race conditions.\nPR:N - The remote target holds no privileges on the initiator host; the malformed VPD page is consumed unconditionally during device discovery/revalidation with no authentication or capability check on the initiator side. iSCSI is frequently deployed without CHAP, so no credentials are needed.\nUI:N - No operator action is required — sd_revalidate_disk() runs automatically on probe, on iSCSI session reconnect, and on rescan, so the attacker-controlled response is parsed without any victim interaction.\nS:U - The OOB read and its consequences are confined to the kernel's own memory and the SCSI/block layer's data structures; no security authority boundary such as a VM or IOMMU boundary is crossed.\nC:L - The read is strictly bounded to a single byte at a fixed offset past the VPD data, and only bits 4-5 of it become observable, surfacing through /sys/block/sdX/device/zoned_cap and the dmesg classification message. The attacker cannot scan or seek to arbitrary memory, so the disclosure of uninitialized heap content is limited.\nI:L - Uninitialized/out-of-bounds heap content is written into sdkp->zoned and then used to configure the block device's zoned model via disk_set_zoned(), so uncontrolled data modifies persistent kernel device state. The modification is limited and not attacker-chosen, so it does not amount to an arbitrary write.\nA:H - When the stale byte yields zoned == 1, a normal disk is misclassified as host-aware zoned and sd_zbc_read_zones() fails, driving the error path that sets sdkp->capacity = 0 and zeroes the gendisk capacity — the storage device becomes unusable, which is fatal if it is the boot/root disk. Additionally the access crosses the kmalloc request boundary on 32-bit and under KFENCE/KASAN, producing a slab-out-of-bounds report that panics on panic_on_warn configurations." } ] } ], "affected": [ { "product": "Linux", "vendor": "Linux", "defaultStatus": "unaffected", "repo": "https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git", "programFiles": [ "drivers/scsi/sd.c" ], "versions": [ { "version": "7fb019c46eeea4e3cc3ddfd3e01a24e610f34fac", "lessThan": "60312ae7392f9c75c6591a52fc359cf7f810d48f", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "7fb019c46eeea4e3cc3ddfd3e01a24e610f34fac", "lessThan": "568c7c4c77eee6df7677bb861b7cee7398a3255d", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "7fb019c46eeea4e3cc3ddfd3e01a24e610f34fac", "lessThan": "a776050373893e4c847a49abeae2ccb581153df0", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "7fb019c46eeea4e3cc3ddfd3e01a24e610f34fac", "lessThan": "413df704f149dec585df07466d2401bbd1f490a0", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "7fb019c46eeea4e3cc3ddfd3e01a24e610f34fac", "lessThan": "f81eaf08385ddd474a2f41595a7757502870c0eb", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" } ] }, { "product": "Linux", "vendor": "Linux", "defaultStatus": "affected", "repo": "https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git", "programFiles": [ "drivers/scsi/sd.c" ], "versions": [ { "version": "5.19", "status": "affected" }, { "version": "0", "lessThan": "5.19", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.1.113", "lessThanOrEqual": "6.1.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.6.54", "lessThanOrEqual": "6.6.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.10.13", "lessThanOrEqual": "6.10.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.11.2", "lessThanOrEqual": "6.11.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.12", "lessThanOrEqual": "*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "original_commit_for_fix" } ] } ], "cpeApplicability": [ { "nodes": [ { "operator": "OR", "negate": false, "cpeMatch": [ { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "5.19", "versionEndExcluding": "6.1.113" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "5.19", "versionEndExcluding": "6.6.54" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "5.19", "versionEndExcluding": "6.10.13" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "5.19", "versionEndExcluding": "6.11.2" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "5.19", "versionEndExcluding": "6.12" } ] } ] } ], "references": [ { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/60312ae7392f9c75c6591a52fc359cf7f810d48f" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/568c7c4c77eee6df7677bb861b7cee7398a3255d" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/a776050373893e4c847a49abeae2ccb581153df0" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/413df704f149dec585df07466d2401bbd1f490a0" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/f81eaf08385ddd474a2f41595a7757502870c0eb" } ], "title": "scsi: sd: Fix off-by-one error in sd_read_block_characteristics()", "x_generator": { "engine": "bippy-1.2.0" } }, "adp": [ { "metrics": [ { "other": { "type": "ssvc", "content": { "id": "CVE-2024-47682", "role": "CISA Coordinator", "options": [ { "Exploitation": "none" }, { "Automatable": "no" }, { "Technical Impact": "partial" } ], "version": "2.0.3", "timestamp": "2024-10-21T13:07:09.255382Z" } } } ], "title": "CISA ADP Vulnrichment", "providerMetadata": { "orgId": "134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0", "shortName": "CISA-ADP", "dateUpdated": "2024-10-21T13:14:16.478Z" } }, { "title": "CVE Program Container", "references": [ { "url": "https://lists.debian.org/debian-lts-announce/2025/01/msg00001.html" } ], "providerMetadata": { "orgId": "af854a3a-2127-422b-91ae-364da2661108", "shortName": "CVE", "dateUpdated": "2025-11-03T22:20:47.796Z" } } ] } }
