However there\nis still a race between retrieving the pointer from the XArray and\nincrementing the reference count.\n\nTo avoid this race simply hold the internal XArray lock when\nincrementing the reference count, this ensures there cannot be a racing\ncall to xa_erase()." } ], "metrics": [ { "cvssV3_1": { "version": "3.1", "vectorString": "CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H", "baseScore": 7.8, "baseSeverity": "HIGH" }, "scenarios": [ { "lang": "en", "value": "AV:L - The vulnerable code is reached only through DRM ioctls (`GROUP_SUBMIT`, `GROUP_GET_STATE`, `GROUP_DESTROY`) issued on the panthor render node `/dev/dri/renderD*`. This requires local access to the device file; there is no network or remote path.\nAC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the race — one thread calls GROUP_SUBMIT/GROUP_GET_STATE while another calls GROUP_DESTROY on the same handle and the same drm_file — and the create/destroy/submit loop is cheap enough to retry indefinitely until the window between `xa_load()` and `kref_get()` is hit. No condition depends on anything outside the attacker's control.\nPR:L - All panthor group ioctls are tagged `DRM_RENDER_ALLOW` with no capability check, so any unprivileged local user with render-node access can reach them; on Android and Chromebook-class Mali CSF devices that is every application. Only a basic local account is needed, not root.\nUI:N - The attacker's own process performs every step — open the render node, create a group, and race two of its own threads. No victim action or interaction is required.\nS:U - The use-after-free corrupts kernel heap memory within the same kernel security authority; there is no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary crossed. Impact is confined to standard kernel-level compromise.\nC:H - The dangling `panthor_group` is subsequently dereferenced for `queue_count`, `queues[idx]->entity`, and `vm`, so a heap-sprayed replacement object (trivially another same-sized `panthor_group`) yields attacker-directed pointer reads. This gives a path to arbitrary kernel memory disclosure, not a bounded leak.\nI:H - `kref_get()` performs a write (refcount increment) into freed/reallocated memory, and the later `group_put()` decrements a refcount the caller never owned, enabling premature free of a live object. Combined with the controlled `queues[]`/`entity` pointers fed into `drm_sched_job_init()`, this is exploitable for arbitrary write and control-flow hijack.\nA:H - Even without successful exploitation, the use-after-free produces a refcount saturation warning, corrupted slab state, and dereference of freed memory, reliably causing an oops or panic. The race can be triggered repeatedly to crash the system at will." } ] } ], "affected": [ { "product": "Linux", "vendor": "Linux", "defaultStatus": "unaffected", "repo": "https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git", "programFiles": [ "drivers/gpu/drm/panthor/panthor_sched.c" ], "versions": [ { "version": "de85488138247d034eb3241840424a54d660926b", "lessThan": "8a585d553c11965332d7a2d74e79ef92a42bfc87", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "de85488138247d034eb3241840424a54d660926b", "lessThan": "44742138d151c3a945460ae7beff8ae45ac0bf58", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" }, { "version": "de85488138247d034eb3241840424a54d660926b", "lessThan": "cac075706f298948898b1f63e81709df42afa75d", "status": "affected", "versionType": "git" } ] }, { "product": "Linux", "vendor": "Linux", "defaultStatus": "affected", "repo": "https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git", "programFiles": [ "drivers/gpu/drm/panthor/panthor_sched.c" ], "versions": [ { "version": "6.10", "status": "affected" }, { "version": "0", "lessThan": "6.10", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.10.14", "lessThanOrEqual": "6.10.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.11.3", "lessThanOrEqual": "6.11.*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "semver" }, { "version": "6.12", "lessThanOrEqual": "*", "status": "unaffected", "versionType": "original_commit_for_fix" } ] } ], "cpeApplicability": [ { "nodes": [ { "operator": "OR", "negate": false, "cpeMatch": [ { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "6.10", "versionEndExcluding": "6.10.14" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "6.10", "versionEndExcluding": "6.11.3" }, { "vulnerable": true, "criteria": "cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*", "versionStartIncluding": "6.10", "versionEndExcluding": "6.12" } ] } ] } ], "references": [ { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/8a585d553c11965332d7a2d74e79ef92a42bfc87" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/44742138d151c3a945460ae7beff8ae45ac0bf58" }, { "url": "https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/cac075706f298948898b1f63e81709df42afa75d" } ], "title": "drm/panthor: Fix race when converting group handle to group object", "x_generator": { "engine": "bippy-1.2.0" } }, "adp": [ { "metrics": [ { "cvssV3_1": { "scope": "UNCHANGED", "version": "3.1", "baseScore": 4.7, "attackVector": "LOCAL", "baseSeverity": "MEDIUM", "vectorString": "CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H", "integrityImpact": "NONE", "userInteraction": "NONE", "attackComplexity": "HIGH", "availabilityImpact": "HIGH", "privilegesRequired": "LOW", "confidentialityImpact": "NONE" } }, { "other": { "type": "ssvc", "content": { "id": "CVE-2024-50174", "role": "CISA Coordinator", "options": [ { "Exploitation": "none" }, { "Automatable": "no" }, { "Technical Impact": "partial" } ], "version": "2.0.3", "timestamp": "2025-10-01T20:19:24.059028Z" } } } ], "problemTypes": [ { "descriptions": [ { "lang": "en", "type": "CWE", "cweId": "CWE-362", "description": "CWE-362 Concurrent Execution using Shared Resource with Improper Synchronization ('Race Condition')" } ] } ], "title": "CISA ADP Vulnrichment", "providerMetadata": { "orgId": "134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0", "shortName": "CISA-ADP", "dateUpdated": "2025-10-01T20:27:10.632Z" } } ] } }
