If the interface is concurrently torn down\nbefore that work runs, cfg80211_pmsr_wdev_down() calls\ncfg80211_pmsr_process_abort() directly. However, the already-\nscheduled pmsr_free_wk work item remains pending and may run\nafter the interface has been removed from the driver. This\ncould cause the driver's abort_pmsr callback to operate on a\ntorn-down interface, leading to undefined behavior and\npotential crashes.\n\nCancel pmsr_free_wk synchronously in cfg80211_pmsr_wdev_down()\nbefore calling cfg80211_pmsr_process_abort(). This ensures any\npending or in-progress work is drained before interface teardown\nproceeds, preventing the work from invoking the driver abort\ncallback after the interface is gone." } ], "metrics": [ { "cvssV3_1": { "version": "3.1", "vectorString": "CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H", "baseScore": 7.8, "baseSeverity": "HIGH" }, "scenarios": [ { "lang": "en", "value": "AV:L - The vulnerable path is reached through local nl80211 generic-netlink operations for `NL80211_CMD_PEER_MEASUREMENT_START` and netlink socket teardown/device teardown, not by remote WiFi frames alone.\nAC:L - The attacker can create the PMSR request, close the originating netlink socket to schedule `pmsr_free_wk`, and trigger interface teardown concurrently; this is an attacker-controlled race.\nPR:L - The start path is gated by `GENL_UNS_ADMIN_PERM`, requiring `CAP_NET_ADMIN` in the relevant network namespace. Under the kernel guidance, namespace-reachable `CAP_NET_ADMIN` is Low privileges rather than High.\nUI:N - No victim action is required once the attacker has local access and the needed netlink privilege; the attacker controls the request, socket close, and teardown sequence.\nS:U - The impact remains within the kernel/driver security authority and does not cross a VM, IOMMU, or separate sandbox boundary.\nC:H - The stale pending work can operate on a torn-down wireless interface and driver state, a use-after-teardown/use-after-free style condition. In the highest defensible case, freed or invalid kernel objects may be reused to gain memory disclosure primitives.\nI:H - The same stale work and driver callback path can dereference and act on invalid or reallocated kernel/driver objects. Treating this as exploitable memory corruption makes arbitrary write or control-flow impact defensible.\nA:H - The commit explicitly describes undefined behavior and potential crashes from invoking the abort callback after interface teardown.
