Involve your child in the process:
Introduce the Candidates: Talk about the candidates’ positions on the things that matter most to your child. How do they feel about recycling? animals? schools?
Take them to the Polls*: After you fill out your ballot, have your child participate. Maybe they push the button, pull the lever, or feed the ballot. Playing an active role makes the process feel more real.
Follow Up: Discuss the results. How many people voted in your city? State? Which candidates won? Was it a close race? Regardless of who won, reinforce that voting is a VERY important way for your voice to be heard.
Take it Further: Vote at home! Take a family vote on what show to watch or book to read—don’t forget to count the votes and announce the winner!
