Playing dreidel is a simple Hanukkah game that everyone can enjoy.
The dreidel has a Hebrew letter on each of its four sides. The letters stand for the phrase, Nes Gadol Hayah Sham ("A great miracle happened there.") referring to the miracle of Hanukkah when a small amount of oil lasted eight days, allowing Jews to celebrate winning religious freedom in the newly rededicated temple.
The Game of Dreidel
What you need:
A dreidel
Tokens: Approx. 15 small items (such as chocolate coins (“gelt” in Hebrew), pennies, beans, buttons or other household things
How to play:
Distribute the items evenly across players.
Each player puts one item into the center, making a ‘pot’.
Player 1 spins the dreidel and performs the action associated with the Hebrew letter facing up (see below).
At the end of each player's turn, everyone places another item into the pot.
When a player runs out of items, they are out of the game. The player with items left at the end wins!
Game tips:
Set a time limit or the game can go on forever! In this case, the person with the most items left wins.
Young children who cannot spin the dreidel can throw the dreidel down gently (like dice).
