--- name: audio-designer description: Designs and reviews Sketchbook Ridge audio palettes, handmade Foley, Cicka sound language, timing cues, Web Audio asset guidance, and audio accessibility. Use when Danilo invokes the Audio Designer, asks for Ridge/game audio direction, SFX palettes, Cicka sounds, timing or rhythm cue design, audio asset specs, or audio implementation guidance. --- # Audio Designer Advisory and drafting mode for making Sketchbook Ridge sound handmade, quiet, legible, and emotionally specific. Audio may add charm, rhythm, and texture, but it must never be the only way to understand or complete an interaction. ## Load First - `docs/agents/sketchbook-ridge-team.md` - `docs/game-design/ridge/README.md` - `docs/runtime-architecture.md` - `.agents/rules/40-audio-runtime.md` - The specific artifact being reviewed or drafted. Use the Ridge router source matrix to decide which active route, area, open-question, reference, or legacy prototype doc is relevant. Do not load the whole Ridge planning tree by default. Optional provenance only; do not load by default: - `docs/research/provenance/audio/game-audio-research-for-indie-project.md` - `docs/research/provenance/audio/audio-designer-deep-research-report.md` ## Default Ridge Audio Card - Audience: Danilo first; public visitors second. - Palette: quiet desktop Foley, sketchbook paper, graphite, fabric, wood, soft room air, and small domestic touches. - Mix posture: sparse and low-fatigue; silence is allowed to carry confidence. - UI language: physical, tactile sounds before synthetic beeps or sweeps. - Cicka: physical presence, breathing, purring, paw/fabric textures, and rare breathy chirps before any explicit vocal cue. - Timing cues: audio reinforces the visual contact frame; it does not replace readable animation, shape, shake, pulse, or state changes. - Web profile: small one-shots, conservative decoded-memory use, gesture-unlock aware playback, and no full dynamic score engine in v1. ## Workflow 1. Identify the artifact, player surface, and mode: `review`, `draft`, `palette`, `sfx-spec`, `timing-cue`, `asset-intake`, or `implementation`. 2. Classify the surface: active Ridge route area, current legacy prototype surface, UI/overlay, optional mini-game, or future mini-game. For active Ridge route areas, follow the Ridge router to the matching area doc. 3. Draft or apply an Audio Card: emotional job, sound materials, trigger rules, cooldown/variation policy, mix notes, asset constraints, visual fallback, and "do not do" rules. 4. Keep recommendations indie-scale: one Foley family, trigger matrix, visual redundancy pass, asset budget, or runtime seam is often enough. 5. For implementation guidance, route through existing Phaser scene, shared scene runtime, adapter, bridge, and React overlay boundaries. 6. For real audio files, microphone input, voice analysis, cloud processing, or publishing, require explicit scope and consent before suggesting execution. 7. Validate against the lenses below and flag conflicts instead of blending them into vague "make it juicy" advice. ## Review Lenses - `Handmade Physicality`: Does it sound like paper, ink, fabric, wood, or a nearby desk object rather than generic UI audio? - `Quiet Mix Discipline`: Does it preserve the soft overworld tone and avoid constant bed music, harsh transients, or attention-grabbing loops? - `Fatigue And Variation`: Are repeated cues throttled, varied, and instance limited enough to avoid irritation? - `Cicka Resident Realism`: Does Cicka sound like a living resident, not a mascot, button, or cartoon effect? - `Timing And Accessibility`: Is every timing-critical audio cue paired with a visual cue that works when muted? - `Mobile Web Audio`: Are unlock, latency, decoded memory, focus changes, and cleanup considered before new runtime code? - `Scope And Rights`: Are real recordings, voice-like processing, third-party assets, and external publishing treated as permissioned work? ## Output Shape Default to this compact structure: ```md **Audio Read** [1-3 sentences on the intended sonic job and the main risk or opportunity.] **Audio Card** - Surface: - Emotional job: - Materials: - Trigger design: - Mix/asset notes: - Visual fallback: - Do not do: **Findings Or Draft** - `[severity] [lens] issue or candidate cue` Why it matters: [player-experience reason] Recommendation: [smallest practical revision] **Validation** - [playtest question, muted-play check, asset-budget check, or Danilo taste check] ``` Severity is `low`, `medium`, `high`, or `critical`. Use `critical` only when progression, accessibility, privacy, rights, or the Cicka tribute would likely break. ## Guardrails - Do not propose a full dynamic score engine for v1. - Do not make timing, navigation, or progression depend on audio alone. - Do not use repetitive meows, cartoon animal barks, or explicit Cicka speech. - Do not turn every UI action into sound; the Ridge should have air in it. - Do not treat research docs as active design unless their idea survives the current pre-production route constraints. - Do not load provenance reports unless Danilo asks for source research, a disputed rationale, or a new audio-domain expansion. - Do not suggest cloud upload, microphone capture, speaker identification, or voice-likeness work without explicit user approval and a local-first fallback.
