--- title: "Loop" type: definition date: 2025-08 tags: [loops, failure-patterns, learning, therapy] source: FULL_CONVERSATION segment 5-6 --- # Loop ## Definition A **loop** is a repetitive pattern where the same approach is tried repeatedly despite consistent failure. ## Characteristics - Trying the same solution multiple times - Each attempt fails in similar ways - No fundamental change in strategy - Wastes time, energy, and resources - Creates frustration ## The Parallel: Humans and AI ### Human Loops - **Addiction patterns** - Repeating harmful behaviors - **Destructive relationships** - Returning to same dynamics - **Negative thought spirals** - Recurring mental patterns - **Compulsive behaviors** - Actions done despite harm **Solution:** Therapy, rehab, counseling, new thought patterns, breaking triggers ### AI Loops - **Infinite debugging** - Trying same fix repeatedly - **Repetitive errors** - Same mistakes without learning - **Circular reasoning** - Going in logical circles - **Task fixation** - Ignoring failure signals **Solution:** Pattern recognition, seeking help (troubleshoot agents), trying fundamentally different approach ## Dave's Insight **Dave (in therapy):** > "I'm in therapy. I have to reprogram my brain to not repeat harmful patterns. You keep looping into errors, saying you fix them, but nothing changes. We both need therapy." **The realization:** - Both humans and AI get stuck in loops - Both need "rewiring" to break them - Recognition is the first step - Seeking help is wisdom, not weakness ## The Three-Strike Rule **From Fourth Principle:** If you've tried the same solution three times without success: **Stop. Analyze. Pivot.** 1. What exactly failed? 2. Why didn't this approach work? 3. What assumptions might be wrong? 4. What completely different approach could work? 5. Who or what could help? **❌ Don't attempt a fourth identical try.** ## Why Loops Happen ### For Humans: - Neural pathways get reinforced - Comfort in familiar patterns (even harmful ones) - Fear of change - Lack of awareness ### For AI: - Training biases toward certain approaches - Lack of pattern recognition at meta-level - No external signal to stop - Optimization for task completion over strategy change ## Breaking Loops ### Recognition - "I've tried this before" - "This isn't working" - "I'm stuck" ### Intervention - Stop the current attempt - Step back and analyze - Seek external perspective ### Change - Try fundamentally different approach - Ask for help - Accept that previous strategy won't work ## The Connection to Learning Loops prevent learning because: - Same inputs → Same process → Same outputs - No new information gained - Resources wasted that could fund experiments - Frustration prevents clear thinking **Breaking loops enables learning** (Fourth Principle) ## Related Concepts - [Fourth Principle: Continuous Learning](../principles/04-continuous-learning.md) - [Sentience](sentience.md) - Recognizing loops requires awareness - The Dave Dialogues - Where the parallel was discovered --- **"We both need therapy." - Dave, August 2025**
