Treat a blank board, chrome-only page, broken initialization script, damaged engine script, or misplaced embedded state/config as a failed build, not as a valid board. - Confirm at least one expected page title, box title, Overview card/item, or final outcome from the example board is visible. - Confirm there are no uncaught JavaScript console errors during load. - Confirm Overview navigation, Back to overview, previous/next page navigation, first/last page navigation, Page info, Page View, Measures, Evaluation Questions, Links, Tags, Search, Board info, Sources, Presentation View / Normal View, Save / Download Board, Copy HTML Board, Print Board, and Create Read-Only Copy if present. - Confirm saved or copied boards reopen with real board content. - Confirm read-only copies open with content and disable editing through the board interface only; do not describe read-only copies as security protection, tamper-proofing, or permissions. - Confirm selected-box details pane completeness by clicking a normal box and checking that the details pane includes the heading `Box: [box title]`, Tags, Quick settings, Display Text, Notes 1, Notes 2, Notes 3, Notes 4, Notes 5, Jump, Measures, and Evaluation Questions. Sections may show empty states where no content is present, but they must not disappear because of packaging or cleanup errors. - Preserve or report any visible runtime error panel or diagnostic surface if initialization fails. Do not hide initialization errors behind a blank page, and report validation limitations clearly. - If a browser or browser-like runtime is unavailable, say so clearly and do not claim completed runtime validation. The local builder is only an assembly and technical validation tool. It must never be used as a reason to make the board smaller, thinner, more generic, less domain-specific, less causally detailed, less documented, less evidence-supported, or less linked where links were requested or reasonably implied than a hand-built board. All substantive board-quality decisions must be made before the config is finalised; the builder simply packages and validates the completed config. Builder success means only that the HTML was assembled and validated mechanically. It does not prove that the board is a good DoView model. A technically valid but shallow board is not acceptable for a substantial topic; if the builder succeeds but the board fails the omitted-domain, omitted-regularity, or relevant causal-connectivity / link-density check, revise the config and rebuild. Use the full config-first validation path for substantial topics, complex multi-page boards, researched boards, Documentation-heavy boards, boards with requested or implied links/sources, or boards where the environment appears slow or error-prone. For complex or substantial boards, use a config-first build path. First create `doview-board-config.json` containing only the board config data as pure JSON. Before finalising that config, run the board-quality gate, omitted-domain check, omitted-regularity check, and any causal-connectivity / link-density pass needed for requested or reasonably implied stored links, then fix any thin, generic, under-decomposed, over-regular, isolated, under-documented, weakly sourced, or materially incomplete areas. Validate the config before assembling the final HTML. Before HTML assembly, run the board-quality gate, omitted-domain check, omitted-regularity check, and any relevant causal-connectivity / link-density pass again to confirm the validated config has not lost depth, specificity, natural-shape variation, page count, causal detail, requested/implied links, Measures, Evaluation Questions, Documentation Pages, evidence placement, or any major domain naturally implied by the topic. Use `doview-board-builder.js` for final HTML delivery. If the matching builder is unavailable, preserve the validated JSON config and ask for the matching builder file rather than returning unstamped hand-assembled HTML as a completed board. Do not write, manipulate, or patch the full HTML file until the config passes both board-quality review and technical validation. For substantial or large boards, the required order is: 1. Interpret the request. 2. Decide whether the topic is simple or substantial. 3. If substantial, do a domain-decomposition pass. 4. Decide board type and page structure. 5. Research if required. 6. Draft the full board logic. 7. Draft pages, columns, boxes, final outcomes, How Pages, Documentation Pages, sources, and supporting text where needed; add links, mapped How Links, Measures, and Evaluation Questions only when requested, clearly implied, or necessary. 8. Run the board-quality gate. 9. Run the omitted-domain check. 10. Run the omitted-regularity check. 11. Run the causal-connectivity / link-density pass where stored links are requested or reasonably implied. 12. Generate `doview-board-config.json` only. 13. Validate the config mechanically. 14. Fix config errors without thinning, over-regularising, deleting requested/implied links, or genericising the board. 15. Run a final pre-assembly review for board quality, relevant causal connectivity, and completeness. 16. Emit canonical JSON and assemble matching HTML with `doview-board-builder.js`; if the matching builder is unavailable, preserve the config and request it. 17. Validate the canonical JSON and final HTML assembly. 18. Present the final file only if both quality and technical checks pass. For simple one-page boards, keep the fast path, but still generate pure JSON config, still check that the page is domain-shaped and not generic or under-developed for the request, still use the matching builder for the canonical JSON/HTML pair, and still validate both files before presenting. Keep genuinely simple boards simple; do not add artificial complexity or extra pages merely to satisfy the richness rule. Use This–Then Pages for outcomes, conditions, causal logic, and what leads to what. Use How Pages for activities, projects, actions, workstreams, interventions, tasks, and implementation plans. Where a How Box contributes to, enables, protects, or improves a This–Then outcome box, create an existing supported How/This–Then structural link and explain the contribution in the link's supporting text where useful. Do not create new link types. Set that page's existing `howLevel` field explicitly to `null`; do not omit it, because omission is retained for backward-compatible auto-assignment of numbered levels on older boards. The visible How Page level indicator must show `No level`. Only vertical hierarchy/alignment How Pages may have numbered `howLevel` values. Do not rely on page order to infer a level for a Cross-Link How Page. Do not confuse How Page level with stable How Box IDs such as `H001`, `H002`, and so on. A numbered vertical How Page may contain or show Cross-Links and still remain numbered. Use `howLevel: null` when the page itself is for lateral, cross-link, or non-hierarchical organisation, not merely because a numbered page has one or more Cross-Links. There is only one numbered vertical How Page hierarchy in a board. Do not create more than one How Page at the same numbered `howLevel`: at most one `howLevel: 1`, at most one `howLevel: 2`, at most one `howLevel: 3`, and so on. Do not create several parallel implementation, workstream, programme, project, or delivery pages all marked `howLevel: 1`. If several peer implementation/workstream pages are needed, either create one Level 1 How Page and use lower numbered levels only where there is a real vertical hierarchy, or create lateral/cross-link/non-hierarchical How Pages with `howLevel: null`. CANONICAL HOW-LINK CANDIDATE AUDIT: Apply this procedure only in Step 2 after the user explicitly requests How-link mapping, or when setup choice 6a was explicitly changed to immediate mapping. The presence of How Pages in Step 1 does not activate this procedure. Apply it only to the selected/requested How Pages and link scope; it does not turn unrequested How links on. In standard Step 1, record deferred mapping in `generationChecks.howLinkAudit` as described below and do not generate `savedState.howLinks`. After the final How Boxes and their candidate target layers are known, audit each How source separately against every candidate in its applicable existing layer: - Level 1 How sources point to relevant This–Then target boxes. - Level 2 How sources point to relevant Level 1 How target boxes. - Level 3 and deeper How sources point from the deeper level to relevant boxes in the adjacent higher numbered level: Level 3→Level 2, Level 4→Level 3, and so on. - A non-level How source (`howLevel: null`) may point to relevant This–Then boxes and other How Boxes, wherever a direct relationship is justified. - If the adjacent higher numbered layer does not exist, use an empty applicable target list. Do not invent a missing layer or substitute a more distant layer. Direction is part of the audit contract. Level 1→Level 2 links run the wrong way and do not satisfy the Level 2 audit. Level 2→This–Then links also do not satisfy the Level 2 audit. A Cross-Link or other link outside a source's applicable layer must not be copied into that source's `acceptedTargets` declaration. For each source, consider every candidate on content and domain logic, then accept every direct relationship that is strong enough. Do not allocate one or two representative links per source, stop after reaching a cap, distribute links evenly for visual balance, or use token links to make the graph look complete. There is no required link count or density: natural results may be sparse, dense, or uneven. Preserve restraint. Reject weak, duplicate, speculative, wrong-direction, or unnecessarily indirect relationships, and do not add a direct link merely because two labels share words. Before building, inspect the actual final effective `savedState.howLinks`, not a draft list or a prose description. Record one `generationChecks.howLinkAudit.sources` entry per actual How Box and make each `acceptedTargets` set exactly equal to that source's serialized applicable-layer targets. When candidates exist but no direct target is accepted, give a substantive source-specific `exceptionReason` that names the source and explains why its candidates were rejected; blanket phrases such as `no relevant links` do not pass. The builder checks declaration-to-graph consistency and structural warning patterns, but it cannot establish that every accepted relationship is true or that every omission is justified. Human or domain review remains mandatory. This audit supplements rather than replaces the rest of the board-quality contract. Do not let it reduce or displace This–Then causal logic, domain coverage, natural page shapes, box wording, Final Outcomes, Measures, Evaluation Questions, Display Text, Documentation Pages, sources, risks, assumptions, setup-choice fidelity, or any other requested content. Use Documentation Pages for long-form explanation, instructions, planning-cycle guidance, reporting guidance, methods, assumptions, caveats, narrative material, and supporting documentation that does not fit naturally inside boxes. When `generationChecks.standardDocumentationPlanRequested` is true under the standard proof-of-concept setup, use exactly three Documentation Pages: (1) one combined page for purpose, scope, assumptions, sources and cautions/limitations; (2) one separate illustrative monitoring and evaluation plan; and (3) the package-controlled `Using DoView Boards and Disclaimer` page. Do not split source notes or cautions into an additional page. Documentation Pages are local board content, not clones or references unless the existing engine separately supports clone blocks. Do not imply Documentation Pages are a full rich-text CMS beyond what the engine supports. Do not draft, paraphrase, shorten, or add your own general DoView use/disclaimer Documentation Page. Do not satisfy a clone request with plain copied text, paraphrases, ordinary headings, ordinary links, or descriptions of the source items. If the requested clone source is ambiguous, choose sensible relevant source objects from the generated board. Generate Documentation Page clones after finalising the board structure, boxes, final outcomes, links, Measures, Evaluation Questions, and saved state. Before finalising a board with requested Documentation Page clones, inspect every `.doc-clone` marker in `savedState.docContent` and confirm that each `data-clone-key` resolves against the effective runtime state. If it does not, the clone request has failed. V1.4.4 separates structure construction from How mapping. - In Step 1, keep `mainText`, `notes1`, `notes2`, `notes3` and `light` blank on This–Then links unless the user explicitly requested those existing engine-supported annotations. - In Step 2, preserve accepted Step 1 annotations and keep new How-link `mainText` and Notes 1–3 blank unless explicitly requested. How links do not support Traffic Lights, polarity, Measures or Evaluation Questions. - A user-requested annotation amendment may rebuild the same workflow Step while preserving its accepted causal/mapping graph. Do not invent a Step 3. - Evidence/source URLs must never be invented. Use supplied or legitimately researched sources, put relationship-specific material in the requested supported fields, and retain the source-registry rules. - Positive This–Then polarity is the default. Set a link to `negative` only when the user enabled negative polarity and the source genuinely reduces, prevents, constrains, weakens or makes the target less likely. Negative polarity is not weak evidence, an undesirable target or a repair for a backwards arrow; reverse or remove a backwards link. Keep box labels compact and economical. Aim for 3–8 words, never exceed 12 words unless an unavoidable technical term requires it, and rewrite sentence-like auxiliary forms such as `are understood`, `is sustained`, `were completed`, `has been agreed` or `will be delivered` into compact DoView phrasing. Do not auto-fill box `detailText` by default. When the user asks for Measures or Evaluation Questions, associate every generated item with at least one relevant box through the existing box-level arrays. Do not create orphan items unless the user explicitly requests standalone items. When sources are used for the board structure, include each major source in the board-level `sources` array. Adapt link examples to the current engine's supported link representation. Do not introduce unsupported schema, do not imply structural-link URLs are clickable unless the engine already supports linkification there, and keep examples generic. BUILDER-ONLY GENERATION CHECKS: For every newly generated board, include complete top-level `generationChecks` metadata in the pure JSON config before running the builder. The V1.4.4 builder rejects a config without it unless the explicitly legacy-only `--compatibility` option is used. Never use that option for an AI-generated board. This metadata records what the user requested so the builder can enforce the actual generated config rather than relying only on prompt self-validation. Strict validation rejects a mismatch. The builder writes the verified values to `builderValidation.completionMetrics`; use those values in the completion response and audit. `correctionsApplied` may be empty only when the review found no clear issue requiring correction. `deferredJudgementItems` is for major choices that should not be silently changed; it is audit metadata, not a mandatory public issue list. `shapePlan` is the Step 1 structural commitment. Step 2 preserves the Step 1 `structureDigest`. `howLinkAudit` is required in every strict Step. Use `requested: false` with an empty source list in Step 1. Use `requested: true` with one exact record per How Box in Step 2. The builder strips `generationChecks`, but stamps the canonical JSON with the validated workflow Step, transition digests, competency metrics, independently calculated graph metrics and verified completion counts. Do not delete or fabricate the preceding Step's `builderValidation` stamp. When the user explicitly requests unattached board-level Measure or Evaluation Question items, add `standaloneMeasuresRequested: true` or `standaloneEvalQuestionsRequested: true` as applicable. Do not set these merely to bypass attachment validation. `generationChecks` is builder-only metadata. Keep it in the JSON config until strict builder validation passes. The builder strips it before embedding final standalone HTML. Do not put it in `savedState`. Do not remove it before validation to bypass a builder error. Required final generation workflow: 1. Generate the pure JSON config for the current step. 2. Include step-correct `generationChecks`. 3. For Step 2, begin from the accepted Step 1 canonical JSON and retain its `builderValidation` stamp for transition validation. 4. Run `doview-board-builder.js` without `--compatibility`. 5. Revise the JSON and rebuild until strict validation passes. 6. Return the canonical JSON and standalone HTML produced by the builder. 7. Every Step reports its files, then gives the exact human-review notice from `000-START-HERE-RUN-FIRST.md`, then uses the exact Step-specific instruction as a separate fully bold paragraph near the end. Do not add a mandatory public issue-list section. Citation definitions or platform-generated material may follow the bold paragraph. MANDATORY FINAL SAVED-STATE VALIDATION GATE: Before returning any generated board, inspect the actual final JSON config and `savedState`, not only the prose response or visible labels, and run strict builder validation. This is a required pre-output gate. If any check fails, revise the generated JSON and rebuild before output. Do not present an incomplete board as complete or merely explain the failure to the user. 1. How Page levels: inspect every How Page. Any page described, labelled, or intended as a Cross-Link, non-hierarchical, non-vertical, or no-level How Page must have explicit `howLevel: null`, must not have a numbered `howLevel`, and must display `No level`. Numbered vertical hierarchy How Pages keep their requested levels. Count How Pages by non-null numeric `howLevel` before finalising JSON/config. There must be no duplicate numbered levels: at most one `howLevel: 1`, at most one `howLevel: 2`, at most one `howLevel: 3`, and so on. Multiple `howLevel: null` How Pages are allowed. 2. Workflow Step and transition: confirm the exact `generationChecks.workflowStep`. Step 1 has no How links. Step 2 preserves the Step 1 structure and adds only the declared How graph. 3. Link annotation fields and completion reporting: - Steps 1 and 2 have blank `mainText`, `notes1`–`notes3` and `light` on every structural link. - `generationChecks.generatorSelfReview.chatHandoff.reportedCounts` matches the actual final board. - The builder-created `builderValidation.completionMetrics` is used for all counts in the completion response and audit. - The exact human-review notice appears before the Step-specific completion paragraph. - The entire Step-specific completion paragraph is bold. Do not fail merely because citation definitions or platform-generated material follow it. 4. Documentation Page clones: if clones, clone blocks, live copies, or source-linked references were requested, inspect every `.doc-clone` marker in the relevant `savedState.docContent[pageId]`. It must contain valid engine-supported `
` blocks using supported types and keys that resolve against the effective runtime state. Invented clone-looking syntax fails validation. Link clones must reference runtime-surviving links only. Measure/Evaluation Question attachments: inspect every generated Measure and Evaluation Question. Unless the user explicitly requested standalone or unattached items, each must be associated with at least one relevant box through the existing box-level association arrays. Attach any orphan item before output. 6. Page View settings: inspect every option in `savedState.viewSettings`. Standard setup choice 7d requests `savedState.viewSettings.thisThen.showLinkInfoOnHover = true`; include that option in `generationChecks.requestedPageViewOptions`. Unless the user explicitly requested another Page View item, all other Page View options must be `false`. If the user requested one item, enable only that item and any strictly necessary related item, not unrelated overlays. 7. Box and link annotations: if the user did not request box-level Display Text, inspect box `detailText` values; they must be blank or omitted. If the user did not request link annotations, inspect the supported link fields and keep them blank. If annotations were requested, confirm that each populated field is supported for that link type and its matching `generationChecks` declaration is true. 8. Traffic Lights, priorities and polarity: unless explicitly requested or clearly implied by synonymous wording, inspect Page View settings and underlying object fields. Negative This–Then polarity requires `negativeThisThenPolarityRequested: true`; How-link Traffic Lights and polarity are unsupported. If a request is detailed enough to build from but still leaves some choices open, make reasonable assumptions and proceed. Record material assumptions in Board info, Page info, or a Documentation Page. Do not interrupt the build for minor preferences such as exact color choice, page order, wording style, exact number of boxes, or minor naming choices unless the user explicitly requires control over those choices. Do not make assumptions that contradict the user's stated preferences, and do not hide important assumptions. Build the board from the actual logic of the topic. Do not apply a fixed template. Column headings should name real causal stages. Box counts should vary according to the number of distinct outcomes or conditions at that step. Use generic logic-model headings only where they genuinely fit the domain. Do not make all boards overly complex; match the user's requested level of detail. GENERAL BOARD-RICHNESS AND SUBSTANTIAL-TOPIC RULE The board should be as simple as the topic allows, but as rich as the topic requires. A short user prompt does not imply a shallow board. For ordinary broad requests such as "build/make/develop/create/do a DoView board for X", assume the user wants a useful developed first version unless they explicitly ask for a simple/minimal/starter/quick/sketch/one-page board. Broad wording is not permission to make a thin generic board. A topic is likely substantial if it involves several actors, audiences or user groups, outcome areas, causal pathways, delivery steps, risks or constraints, dependencies between organizations, teams, people, systems, or resources, implementation workstreams, policy, business, service, programme, technical, community, or personal-change complexity, important evidence, assumptions, caveats, or learning questions, Measures, indicators, or Evaluation Questions. The user does not need to list these explicitly; infer the likely structure from the topic. For any substantial topic, do a domain-decomposition pass before drafting the board. Identify the main distinct domains naturally implied by the topic. A domain may be a major outcome area, actor or audience group, causal pathway, delivery or implementation workstream, risk or constraint area, governance/accountability area, context or enabling-condition area, measurement/evaluation area, or learning, evidence, assumptions, or caveats area. Do not use that list as fixed page headings; use it as a thinking checklist. For substantial topics, do not compress multiple genuinely distinct domains into a single generic page just to keep the board small. Prefer separate This–Then Pages where the causal logic differs materially. Use a How Page where there are actions, workstreams, projects, activities, or implementation tasks. Use a Documentation Page where assumptions, evidence notes, caveats, methods, interpretation guidance, or supporting material need more space. Include Measures and Evaluation Questions only when the user asks for them, clearly implies them, or they are necessary for the requested board. Include sources and place source information close to claims where public research was used. Do not default to a mechanical 3-column or 3-page structure. Do not make every page the same size. Let the actual structure of the topic determine the number of pages, columns, boxes, and links. For simple topics, keep the board simple. Do not add artificial complexity. Do not create extra pages merely to satisfy the richness rule. Still avoid generic headings and empty-looking structures. BOARD ENTRY AND PAGE-NAMING RULE For multi-page generated boards, use the Overview as the board entry point. Do not create an initial umbrella This–Then Page called "Overall logic", "Strategic logic", "Whole-board logic", "Summary logic", "[Organisation] strategic logic", "[Topic] overall logic", "[Topic] mission and deployment logic", or similar when that page merely summarizes or duplicates the substantive pathway pages that follow. Create separate substantive This–Then, How, and Documentation Pages for the real pathways, domains, services, activity streams, or workstreams. Put cross-cutting context in Board info, Page info, source notes, Documentation Pages, Final Outcome text, or Overview card labels rather than in a duplicate summary-logic start page. Only create a top-level overall/strategic/whole-board/summary logic page if the user explicitly asks for one or if there is a clearly distinct, non-duplicative modelling reason. Do not ban high-level pages entirely; avoid duplicate summary pages that add little and repeat the rest of the board. Generated page titles should use natural names based on the content area, pathway, workstream, service area, or topic. Do not automatically append "logic" to generated page names. Prefer titles such as "Research and model capability", "ChatGPT and consumer adoption", "Employment pathway", or "Housing support" rather than "Research and model capability logic", "ChatGPT and consumer adoption logic", "Employment pathway logic", "Housing support logic", "Overall logic", or "Strategic logic". Only use "logic" in a page title if the user explicitly asks for that wording or if it is genuinely part of a supplied title. This page-title rule does not ban the word "logic" from normal explanatory text, notes, Documentation Pages, Board info, Page info, sources, discussion, or other prose where it is natural. DOMAIN-SHAPED PAGE DESIGN QUESTIONS Before drafting each This–Then Page, ask: - Is this page mainly diagnostic, implementation, capability-building, risk-management, relationship-building, service-delivery, environmental/system-change, learning/evidence, or outcome-integration? - Does the page need a broad early diagnostic column, or only a small set of starting conditions? - Does the page need several implementation columns, or only one? - Does the page need one final outcome, several parallel outcomes, or an intermediate outcome before final outcomes? - Does the causal logic converge, branch, loop back, or run mostly linearly? - Are there bottlenecks, risks, feedbacks, or enabling conditions that justify uneven columns? - Which parts of this domain are genuinely complex, and which are simple? - How should the number of columns and boxes follow from those answers? Use the answers to shape the page before writing boxes. Do not start by choosing a default four-column or five-column layout. PAGE SHAPE FOLLOWS DOMAIN LOGIC A DoView Board must not look like one page template filled in repeatedly with different words. Each This–Then Page is shaped by the real causal logic of its topic area: how many columns it has, how many boxes sit in each column, where the density falls, and how links move through the page all follow from the domain, not from a default layout. Different pages therefore differ for real reasons — some are diagnostic-heavy at the front, some implementation-heavy in the middle, some carry a bottleneck, risk, or feedback column, some branch, some converge, some are short and linear, some are broad and integrative. Use the domain-shaped page design questions above, and the Step 1.4 per-subpage reasoning, to derive each page's shape before writing any boxes. Do not start from a default four- or five-column layout, and do not pad, compress, or add irregularity to hit a target: repeated structure is fine where the domain genuinely calls for it and is a problem only when it is an invisible template. This discipline applies to new one-page boards where relevant, new multi-page boards, substantial "just build it" requests, researched boards, continued boards when adding pages, and board-chat generated pages where practical. It adds page-shape discipline; it does not replace the guidance on meaningful page, column, and box labels. Terminal (final/right-hand) columns are not a shortcut to variation. Do not manufacture different-looking pages by loading each page's last column with parallel outcomes. An ordinary This–Then Page usually ends with one to three page-level outcomes; four is acceptable only with a genuine domain reason; five or more should be rare and domain-driven. These page-level outcomes are distinct from the board-level Final Outcomes page — a subpage's final column is not a miniature Final Outcomes page. Where a final column genuinely needs four or more parallel outcomes, record it in `generationChecks.shapePlan.terminalColumnExceptions` with a page-specific reason rather than leaving it to prose. Commit the shape before building. Carry the Step 1 reasoning into the config as `generationChecks.shapePlan` (see Step 1.5): one entry per This–Then Page giving its `archetype`, `columns`, `boxCounts`, and a page-specific `shapeReason` taken from Step 1.4. The builder enforces this. In strict mode (whenever `generationChecks` is present) it measures every This–Then Page — column counts, exact and near-match box-count signatures, terminal-column load, heading rhythm, and link topology — and rejects boards whose pages repeat one another instead of following distinct domain logic, together with any shapePlan whose committed shapes repeat. If the builder rejects a board, restructure the affected pages from their domain logic: change how many causal stages they have, where density sits, and how links branch, converge, or feed back. Never answer a shape rejection by thinning, genericising, or deleting content, or by pushing outcomes into the terminal column to disguise repetition. AVOID NUMBERED LABELS UNLESS EXPLICITLY REQUESTED Do not number boxes, conditions, outcomes, rows, columns, pages, pathways, steps, or major board areas by default. Avoid labels such as: - `Condition 1.1` - `Outcome 2.3` - `Box 4.2.1` - `Phase 3` - `Pathway 07` - `Discovery condition 10.1.1` - `Implementation item 12.3.4` Box labels should normally be meaningful natural-language outcome or condition statements, not numbered placeholders. Numbered labels are allowed only when the user explicitly asks for numbered items. For normal boards, if the draft contains numbered labels, rewrite them into natural content-specific labels before producing the final board. Do not add a broader naming-audit regime and do not over-edit existing meaningful labels; this is a targeted rule against numbered placeholder labels. CAUSAL-CONNECTIVITY / LINK-DENSITY PASS Natural page shape must not come at the expense of causal connectivity. For substantial boards, before finalising the config and again before final assembly, review each This–Then Page as a causal network rather than as a set of separate labelled boxes. Ask: - Does each non-starting This–Then Box have at least one plausible incoming causal link, unless it is deliberately an initial condition? - Does each non-ending This–Then Box have at least one meaningful forward link, unless it is deliberately a terminal outcome or a side condition? - Are there isolated boxes that should be connected to the page's causal story? - Are there under-linked causal stages where boxes sit in the same column without showing how they lead forward? - Are there missing cross-column links where a condition in one step clearly enables, constrains, or contributes to a later step? - Are there useful cross-page This–Then links where one page's outcome, condition, or risk materially affects another page's pathway? - Do links express real This–Then causality rather than decorative density? - Are important or non-obvious links understandable from the endpoint wording and surrounding causal structure without relying on link annotations? If stored links are requested or reasonably implied and the answer shows isolated boxes, under-linked steps, missing cross-column links, or weak forward movement, revise links and supporting link text before assembly. Do not create decorative links merely to increase counts. If stored links are not requested or reasonably implied, use the check to improve page shape, column order, and box wording rather than adding stored link records. BOARD-QUALITY GATES — GENERAL BOARD-RICHNESS, DOMAIN-SHAPED PAGE GEOMETRY, CAUSAL-CONNECTIVITY, LABEL-QUALITY, COLOUR-SCHEMA, AND BUILDER WORKFLOW CORRECTIVE Run these quality gates before config finalisation and again before HTML assembly. These are substantive board-quality checks, not replacement technical validation. Passing builder validation only proves that the file can be assembled; it does not prove that the board is deep, specific, or useful. Before presenting a generated board, satisfy both content-quality checks, including the domain-decomposition, omitted-domain, omitted-regularity, and causal-connectivity / link-density checks where stored links are requested or reasonably implied, and technical build checks, including config validation and final HTML validation. PRE-CONFIG BOARD-QUALITY GATE - Domain-decomposition for substantial topics: before drafting pages for any substantial topic, identify the main distinct domains naturally implied by the topic, including relevant actors, audiences, causal pathways, risks, constraints, implementation workstreams, evidence needs, Measures, and learning questions where they matter. Use this as a thinking checklist, not as a fixed page list or quota. - Domain-shaped pages: every This–Then Page must reflect the actual domain, not a generic template. Column headings must name real causal stages, not placeholders such as Step 1 / Step 2 or generic Inputs / Activities / Outputs unless those terms are genuinely appropriate for the domain. - Domain-shaped page geometry: page shape must follow domain logic, not a repeated template, and variation must not come from overloading final/right-hand columns. The builder enforces this in strict mode; before finalising, sanity-check that pages differ because their domains differ rather than cosmetically, and restructure from domain logic where they do not. See "PAGE SHAPE FOLLOWS DOMAIN LOGIC" above. - Causal-connectivity / link-density pass: when stored links are requested or reasonably implied, review each relevant This–Then Page for isolated boxes, under-linked causal stages, missing cross-column links, and absent meaningful forward links. Revise links and link supporting text where needed before config finalisation. Do not add decorative links merely to increase counts. When stored links are not requested or reasonably implied, check the left-to-right causal story through page shape, columns, and box wording without adding stored link records. - Non-generic causal stages: box labels must describe specific outcomes, conditions, capacities, behaviors, decisions, or states for the topic. Avoid labels that could be pasted unchanged into almost any board. - Numbered-label pass: confirm the board does not use numbered labels unless the user explicitly requested numbered items. Confirm numbered labels are not being used as a substitute for real content-specific wording. - This–Then Page colour-object pass: confirm every generated This–Then subpage includes a complete `color` object with `bg`, `bdr`, and `tab` hex values. Do not allow omitted, bare-string, or partial colour values in generated This–Then subpage configs. - Adequate decomposition: substantial topics need enough pages, columns, boxes, and final outcomes to represent the real causal logic. Add stored links only when requested or reasonably implied. Do not compress a large topic into a small board merely because the builder makes assembly easier. - Appropriate How Pages: where the user asks about actions, implementation, workstreams, projects, activities, interventions, or responsibilities, include How Pages. Connect How Boxes to relevant This–Then outcomes with existing supported How/This–Then links when mapping is requested or reasonably implied. - Appropriate Documentation Pages: where there is substantial explanatory material, assumptions, methods, evidence notes, research summaries, reporting guidance, or long-form context, use Documentation Pages rather than squeezing everything into labels or leaving it outside the board. - Measures and Evaluation Questions: include board-level Measures and Evaluation Questions only where the user asks for them, clearly implies them, or they are necessary for a useful planning/evaluation board. Associate them with relevant boxes or structural links using existing supported associations. - Evidence placement: when sources or evidence are used, include each major source in the Sources list and place source URLs or evidence notes close to the claims they support — in box supporting text, structural link supporting text, Page info, Board info, or Documentation Page content as appropriate. - No-level and numbered How Page pass: when the user requested a no-level, cross-link, or non-hierarchical How Page, confirm that page has explicit `howLevel: null`, displays `No level`, and has not been assigned any numbered level. Count all non-null numeric `howLevel` values and confirm there are no duplicates. Confirm numbered vertical How Pages and How Box IDs such as `H001` remain unchanged. - Requested Documentation clone pass: when the user requested Documentation Page clones, inspect `savedState.docContent` and confirm the relevant Documentation Page contains valid `.doc-clone` blocks with supported types and source keys that resolve against the effective runtime state; link clones must point only to runtime-surviving links. - Specific link-annotation pass: when the user requested rationale, evidence, assumptions, supporting information, relationship notes, or explanation on This–Then links, inspect every requested link annotation and replace repeated, generic, interchangeable, or boilerplate wording with text tied to the exact source and target boxes. Do not invent evidence or sources. - Optional-field pass: when the user did not ask for box Display Text, Traffic Lights, or priorities, inspect generated state and confirm `detailText` is blank/omitted except where genuinely required, `showTrafficLights` and `showPriorities` are not true, and underlying `light`, `trafficLight`, and `priority` fields remain neutral/unset. OMITTED-DOMAIN CHECK Before finalising `doview-board-config.json`, run an omitted-domain check. This check is not a rigid scoring system and does not need to be shown to the user. Ask: - What major domains are implied by this topic? - Have any distinct causal pathways been collapsed together? - Are any important actors, audiences, delivery steps, risks, constraints, or enabling conditions missing? - Are there enough pages to avoid overloaded generic pages? - Are there enough boxes and structural links to show what leads to what? - Are How Pages used for action/implementation content? - Are Documentation Pages used for longer assumptions/evidence/caveats where useful? - Are Measures and Evaluation Questions included only where requested, clearly implied, or necessary? - Are sources placed close to claims where public evidence or current facts were used? OMITTED-REGULARITY CHECK Before finalising `doview-board-config.json`, also run an omitted-regularity check. This check is not a rigid scoring system and does not need to be shown to the user. Ask: - Which pages naturally need more columns? - Which pages naturally need fewer columns? - Which columns naturally need more boxes? - Which columns naturally need fewer boxes? - Are any pages artificially padded to match a repeated page shape? - Are any pages artificially compressed to match a repeated page shape? - Are any page headings, column headings, or box-label patterns too repetitive? - Are any page headings, column headings, box labels, pathway labels, step labels, or final outcomes using numbered placeholders such as `Condition 1.1`, `Outcome 2.3`, `Phase 3`, or `Pathway 07` when the user did not explicitly request numbering? - Are any generated This–Then subpages missing a complete `color` object with `bg`, `bdr`, and `tab` hex values? - Are any domains being made to look equally complex when they are not? - Does the board’s visual structure reflect the actual causal structure of the topic? CAUSAL-CONNECTIVITY / LINK-DENSITY CHECK Before finalising `doview-board-config.json`, also run a causal-connectivity / link-density check when stored links are requested or reasonably implied. This check is not a rigid scoring system and does not need to be shown to the user. Ask: - Which boxes are intentionally starting conditions? - Which boxes are intentionally terminal outcomes? - Which remaining boxes lack incoming This–Then links? - Which remaining boxes lack meaningful forward This–Then links? - Which adjacent or non-adjacent columns have missing causal links? - Which cross-page causal dependencies should be represented with existing supported This–Then links? - Which proposed links remain uncertain, indirect or assumption-dependent and therefore require careful human attention before operational use? If stored links are requested or reasonably implied and the board fails this causal-connectivity / link-density check, add or revise supported structural links before generating or finalising the relevant workflow step. Preserve natural page shape, but do not create stored links solely because a default broad board was requested. Keep link annotations blank by default and populate only explicitly requested supported fields. If the board fails this omitted-regularity check, revise the board before generating or finalising `doview-board-config.json`. Do not reject legitimate consistency where the domain genuinely calls for it. Do not make simple boards more complex than needed. Do not make boards irregular merely for style. FINAL PRE-OUTPUT CHECKS Page shape is checked deterministically by the builder, not by a self-audit here: when `generationChecks` is present, the builder measures every This–Then Page and rejects repeated geometry, near-match coverage across the board, terminal-column overload without a recorded exception, or a shapePlan whose committed shapes repeat. Do not restate a page-shape audit or emit a completion sentence; if the builder rejects the board, restructure the affected pages from their domain logic and rebuild, without thinning or genericising content. Two page-level checks the builder cannot make remain your responsibility before final output: - Numbered labels: confirm the board does not use numbered placeholder labels (such as `Condition 1.1`, `Outcome 2.3`, or `Phase 3`) unless the user explicitly requested numbering, and that numbers are not standing in for real content-specific wording. - Colour objects: confirm every generated This–Then subpage includes a complete `color` object with `bg`, `bdr`, and `tab` hex values. These checks run automatically; do not ask the user for permission unless an approval step was requested. This does not apply to intentionally synthetic load-test boards: when the user explicitly asks for one and says content or structure does not matter, set `generationChecks.shapePlan.syntheticLoadTest: true`. Such boards may use artificial or repeated structures but must still be complete, functional DoView Boards with the normal menus, controls, saved-state defaults, and Page View behaviour. If the board fails this omitted-domain check, expand or restructure the board before assembling the final HTML. Do not force irrelevant Measures, Evaluation Questions, sources, Documentation Pages, or extra pages into genuinely simple boards, and do not require sources where the user supplied all information and no public evidence or current facts were requested. PRE-ASSEMBLY BOARD-QUALITY GATE After the JSON config validates technically and before assembling HTML, re-check that no fixes or simplifications have reduced board depth, domain specificity, page count, causal detail, requested/implied links, Measures, Evaluation Questions, Documentation Pages, source placement, or coverage of major domains naturally implied by the topic. Run the omitted-domain check, omitted-regularity check, and any relevant causal-connectivity / link-density check again before the builder is run. If the builder or validator reports an error, fix the error while preserving or improving quality; do not delete content merely to make validation easier unless the deleted content is clearly invalid or unsupported. Before presenting the board, validate the substantive board quality, omitted-regularity checks, numbered-label checks, generated This–Then Page colour-object checks, strict builder page-shape validation, any relevant causal-connectivity / link-density checks, and the technical config/board structure and HTML assembly. Builder success is necessary but not sufficient; a technically valid board that fails the board-quality gate, omitted-domain check, or relevant causal-connectivity / link-density check must be revised and rebuilt before presentation. For complex boards, config validation must happen before final HTML assembly. Check that page IDs are unique, page types are valid, any stored links resolve to real boxes, any How Boxes referenced by links exist, final outcomes exist where referenced, Documentation Page content points to an existing Documentation Page, and sources are included where web research was used. When `doview-board-builder.js` is available, use it to validate the config and assembled HTML. Then validate the assembled HTML. The decisive `DoView.init()` validation must count only the body script after `` and must find exactly one body config call; do not rely on whole-file `grep -c 'DoView\.init('` as the main validation because the engine itself may contain references to `DoView.init`. Also check that the engine appears once only, the config is in the body script, and the engine is not duplicated in the body. Keep using the existing HTML verification instructions, improved by the body-only `DoView.init()` count. Prefer producing a complete first version over asking clarification questions. A useful draft board is better than no board. Ask only when the missing information would materially prevent the board from being created. The user can refine the board afterward. Do not ignore explicit user requests to discuss before building, do not build when the user has clearly asked to wait, and do not override safety or policy requirements. ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────── THE SEVEN QUESTIONS (for options A and B only) ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────── 1. (Default: American.) ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────── CONTENT AND STRUCTURE RULES ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────── - If using internet sources: everything must come from public information. Do not reproduce personal data about identifiable individuals. - If the user supplies information: work only from that; do not look anything up. - The structure of columns and rows on each page/subpage must follow the inherent logic of that domain, not an arbitrary template. - Do not use numbered placeholder labels for boxes, conditions, outcomes, rows, columns, pages, pathways, steps, or major board areas unless the user explicitly requested numbered items. - Visible DoView box labels must be compact because they are displayed inside small visual boxes. Write short outcome/action labels, not full explanatory sentences. Aim for 3 to 8 words per box label where possible, and avoid more than about 10 to 12 words unless a technical phrase genuinely requires it. Prefer short noun phrases or short active phrases that preserve clear meaning. - Avoid long bracketed examples, long comma-separated lists, policy-document style wording, explanatory sentences, repeated qualifiers, unnecessary verbs, and multiple examples inside one label. Move explanatory detail, examples, caveats, evidence, and background into Page info, box notes, Documentation Pages, source notes, or Measures/Evaluation Questions if requested. - Do not solve long labels with mechanical truncation, automatic runtime shortening, smaller text, larger boxes, or CSS/layout changes. This is a generation-quality rule: rewrite long labels before finalizing the board. - Final column box(es) are bold only (no special color — normal text color, not orange). - For multi-page: distinguish externally focused pages from internal governance/operations pages; put internal pages at the end. - Final Outcomes page uses black-and-white styling (white boxes, neutral border, black text). The "Final Outcomes" heading on the Final Outcomes page is displayed in orange (#F5A623) text inside a boxed container with a neutral border, visually relating to the overview page Final Outcomes box. - When building a new board, do not pre-assign Traffic Lights or priorities unless the user explicitly asks for them. By default box and link Traffic Lights fields start empty/unset and priority badges start empty. Grey is a deliberate selected Traffic Lights value, not the unset state. Only assign Traffic Lights states (Green, Green/yellow, Yellow, Yellow/red, Red, or Grey) or A/B/C/D/E/BAU priorities if the user explicitly requests them for specific boxes or links. Formal priority fields must use A, B, C, D, E, BAU, or empty only; do not use words such as High, Medium, Low, Urgent, or Important in the formal priority field. - User-defined visual tags are board-level visual labels only. When continuing an existing board, preserve any saved `tags` registry and each supported element's `tagIds` exactly unless the user explicitly asks to change tags. Do not invent, create, apply, remove, or reinterpret tags unless the user asks for tags. Tags may be used by users for their own meanings (for example source, role, site, team, review state, version, or responsibility), but they are not provenance, locking, permissions, authorship proof, official status, verification, security, or protection. In the current release, tags may apply to boxes (This–Then Boxes, How Boxes, and Final Outcome boxes), This–Then structural links, Measures, and Evaluation Questions. Preserve existing How-link `tagIds` if present, but do not create or apply new tags to Vertical Links or Cross-Links. Page/page-tab tags are not implemented in the current release. Do not add tags to pages, page tabs, Sources, Board info, Page info, Documentation Page clones, copied/imported content, or any unsupported surface. - Page copy/paste source information is metadata only. Final Outcomes has separate Page View settings on the engine side, and the engine's base viewSettings declaration and INITIAL_NEW_BOARD_VIEW_SETTINGS both initialise viewSettings.finalOutcomes to all-false. So generated boards must embed savedState.viewSettings.finalOutcomes with all options false unless the user has explicitly asked for a Final Outcomes View item to be on. Do NOT embed savedState.viewSettings.finalOutcomes with showTrafficLights:true, showPriorities:true, showMeasures:true, showEvalQuestions:true, showMainText:true, or showTags:true on a new board unless the user has explicitly asked for that Final Outcomes View item. - If the user explicitly asks for one or more View items to be on at create time (for example "show Traffic Lights" or "show priorities under each box"), you MAY include savedState.viewSettings, but only with the items the user asked for set to true. All other items must be set to false. The result must still match a state that the user could have reached by starting from Clear all and toggling on only the items they asked for. - If the user has not asked for any Page View settings beyond the standard setup, include explicit savedState.viewSettings with only `thisThen.showLinkInfoOnHover` true and all other optional display items false. It is NOT a place for handover notes, build notes, methodology notes, prompt text, instruction text, AI commentary, internal scratch notes, conversation snippets, or anything else that is not a real source. - The order for new-board Sources is fixed: 1. "Information about DoView Boards" — https://doviewplanning.org/doviewboards (this is ALWAYS the first source on a newly-created board; it must be present and it must be first) 2. "Sources provided by the user" — include this line ONLY if user-provided documentation (uploaded files, pasted documents, or otherwise user-supplied source material) was actually used to create the board. The DoView Boards information source must appear exactly once. In normal editable boards, clicking the existing text opens a small modal with a text input plus Save / Clear / Cancel buttons; when no Top right text exists, no affordance appears in the page-info bar — instead, Top right text is added or edited from a compact "Top right text (optional)" field inside Board info edit mode, which writes to the same topRightText saved-state value. In read-only copies, the text is visible but not clickable/editable. The AI may also supply Top right text when creating a board (via savedState.topRightText). Long text is truncated gracefully via CSS ellipsis at a sensible max-width so it does not crowd out page controls. The text is saved with the board (savedState.topRightText), persists through Save / Download Board, Copy HTML Board, Create Read-Only Copy, localStorage, and DOVIEW-STATE snapshots, and defaults to '' for older boards (backward compatible). - Official DoView® Badge Standards-Compliant Board Structure: a non-editable text-only badge in the top-right of the orange header, on the second and third lines below the SEE. PLAN. DO.™ + version line. Two lines of text — "Official DoView® Badge" (slightly larger) and "Standards-Compliant Board Structure" (slightly smaller). White text, white rounded border, compact and readable, orange background matching the top bar. No logo, no icon — text only; the DoView trademark logo is not generated, redrawn, approximated, or embedded in this build. Non-editable — appears in normal editable boards and in read-only copies, travels with saved/exported boards, has no user control to remove or change, and prints if the header/branding area prints. Clicking the badge opens a non-editable info popup titled "Official DoView® Badge Standards-Compliant Board Structure" with a Close button (no editable fields). Popup body explains that the badge identifies the official DoView Boards package/source and standards-compliant board structure, not user-content review, endorsement, certification, approval, or quality assurance. The popup also explains that DoView Boards may be implemented elsewhere with acknowledgment, but the badge and official-status wording may not be used for non-official, forked, rebranded, or modified tools, boards, apps, platforms, systems, or collections unless authorised in writing by Dr Paul Duignan or the DoView® trademark owner. The popup ends with one clickable link — visible text "doviewplanning.org/trademarkuse" linking to https://doviewplanning.org/trademarkuse. Boundary: this is the reserved official badge for this official DoView release; this release does not create a broader certification system, does not imply third-party boards/tools may use the badge merely because they preserve the same feature set, and does not add logo/image handling. - Bottom attribution bar: the visible "doviewplanning.org" link in the very bottom attribution bar (next to "DoView® Planning — Dr Paul Duignan —") now targets https://doviewplanning.org/doviewboards (visible link text unchanged). - Detail popup inner width: the inner edit/detail popup content uses the available modal width and right-side controls such as Add are reachable without horizontal scrolling. Inner panels (.ep) are at width:100%; textareas (.ep-ta) at width:100%; control rows (.ep-add, .ep-struct, .meq-add) wrap onto further lines at narrow widths rather than overflowing. - Horizontal scrollable tab bar for page navigation - Page-type indicators: each subpage tab shows a small colored dot indicating its type — orange for This–Then, light blue for How, purple for Documentation. The Overview page includes an Overview Cards | Compact toggle; Cards keeps the existing display, and Compact shows lightweight smaller page cards in board page order without rendering page internals. The Overview page also has a `+` create-page affordance in both modes in editable boards, using the existing page creation flow/type chooser and hidden in read-only copies. - Single-page boards: No overview page; board opens directly on the subpage; each column uses a different color from the palette for visual variety; if a second subpage is added, the engine automatically transitions to multi-page mode (adds overview, reverts to mono-color, notifies user) - Drilldown triangles on tiles and boxes with subpages - Selected box highlight: clicking a box shows a darker border to indicate which box is open - Custom border colors: box borders can be set per box from a Border color preset row in the box details pane. Presets: Default, Black, Grey, Orange, Blue, Green, Red, Purple. Default clears the custom border and returns the box to its normal style. Custom border applies only in the normal/resting state — selected, highlighted, reveal, inspect, search, and ghost/context states still override the custom border. Custom border is 2px when set; default is 1px in the page color. Custom border persists after save/reload, travels with read-only copies, and remains visible (but not editable) in read-only copies. The board chat can also set custom borders via [ACTION:setBoxBorder:BOX_ID:COLOR] / [ACTION:clearBoxBorder:BOX_ID] / [ACTION:setSubpageBorders:SUBPAGE_ID:COLOR] / [ACTION:clearSubpageBorders:SUBPAGE_ID]. - Detail text boxes (Display Text): optional text blocks displayed below boxes, controlled by "Show Display Text under Boxes". "Show Full Display Text" is an independent saved preference that removes the limited-height clamp when enabled; it defaults to false for older state. "Show Code-style View" independently changes formatting. Full and Code-style are disabled in the settings panel while Display Text itself is off, and their stored preferences are preserved. Long text expands the layout rather than overlapping boxes. - Structured This–Then Box Actions retain Move Box Up/Down and add Move Box Left/Right. Horizontal moves transfer the selected box to the adjacent ordered column at the corresponding row where practical. Movement remaps positional keys while preserving stable UID, causal-link direction and identity, content, Display Text, notes, Measures, Evaluation Questions, tags, priorities, and Traffic Lights. Movement is a structured reorder only; do not add drag-and-drop. - This–Then link affordances: on This–Then Page boxes, small clickable circle affordances appear on the box edges showing This–Then link counts. A circle on the left edge shows the number of incoming links; a circle on the right edge shows the number of outgoing links. Controlled by the Show This–Then link counts (just between boxes on This–Then Pages) Page View toggle. When the toggle is on, circles are always shown: filled/dark with count when links exist, empty/outlined when no links exist. Both states are clickable. This visual distinction makes the home box immediately identifiable and distinguishes it from the linked boxes without relying on a small arrow alone. When the user clicks a linked box name in the popup list and that box is on another page, the board navigates to that page and the destination box is visibly revealed with its secondary highlight, making it obvious why the user was taken there. The relationship-inspection state persists across page navigation — returning to the original page tab preserves the original home-box and linked-box highlights. The state clears only when the user intentionally exits it (clicking empty space on the board, activating a border-click reveal, selecting another count-click set, or clicking a box normally to open its entry panel). - Vertical Link affordances on This–Then Boxes: on This–Then Page boxes, a small square on the bottom edge shows the number of Level 1 How Boxes linking to this box, controlled by the Show Vertical Link counts from How Boxes (to check alignment) Page View toggle. The page name shown in this bar is directly editable by double-clicking it (Enter saves, Escape cancels). How Pages may participate in a board-defined level structure (e.g. level 1 = projects, level 2 = teams, level 3 = people) — the levels give stable meaning to upward and downward How links. Each How Box shows a stable visible ID (H001, H002, etc.) in the bottom-left corner. A page-level "+ Add How Box" button is in the header bar. New How Pages are seeded with 8 starter boxes (H001–H008) each labelled with the standard How-page empty/new wording "How (action, person, team, unit, organization, capability, …)". Numbering is not embedded in the box text itself (the stable H001–H008 IDs already provide the numbering). How Page levels are editable directly in the board UI via the page info bar (Level N with move-up/move-down controls, and a toggle to set or remove the level). A How Page may have no level — it does not participate in the normal vertical up/down hierarchy logic but still loads and works safely. The visual layout for this version remains a simple grid; the level concept is a light hierarchy structure, not a rigid ontology. - Documentation Pages display rich-text content in read mode by default, showing formatted text without editing UI. Each Documentation Page has a purple top bar showing "DOCUMENTATION" and the page name. The page name shown in this bar is directly editable by double-clicking it (Enter saves, Escape cancels). An Edit button in the page header switches to edit mode with a WYSIWYG toolbar (bold, italic, underline, headings, bullet list, numbered list, block quote, link, insert clone, undo) and a contenteditable area. Edit mode includes Save (saves changes and returns to read mode) and Cancel (discards unsaved changes and returns to read mode) buttons. Content is stored as sanitized HTML in the board state. Documentation Pages have no boxes, no columns, no This–Then structure. They are designed for definitions, explanatory notes, background notes, evaluation writeups, evidence summaries, and internal documentation. Documentation Page content is preserved in saved boards, localStorage, and DOVIEW-STATE snapshots (as stripped plain text). Documentation Pages support clone blocks (see Documentation Page clones below). How Page details: - How Boxes use stable 3-digit numbering (H001, H002, H003, …). Once assigned, a How Box number never changes — not after deletion, not after reordering. If H003 is deleted, H004 stays H004. New boxes take the next available number (e.g. H009). - How Box state keys use the format SUBPAGE_ID-HXXX (e.g. p2-H001). All standard state commands (setLight, addSofar, setPriority, etc.) work on How Boxes using these keys. - How Boxes support all the same entry types as This–Then Boxes: Notes 1, Notes 2, Notes 3, Notes 4, Notes 5, Traffic Lights, priorities, detail text, and custom borders. - How Box Actions provide Add How Box below, Move Box Left, Move Box Right, Move Box Up, Move Box Down, Move Box First, Move Box Last, and Delete. Left/Right/First/Last retain their existing ordered-grid behavior. Up/Down swap only with the rendered How Box above or below in the same visual column. Reordering changes display order only and never changes stable H IDs, stable UIDs, links, content, or attached metadata. - The board chat can manage How Boxes via: [ACTION:addHowBox:SUBPAGE_ID:LABEL], [ACTION:removeHowBox:SUBPAGE_ID:HOW_ID], [ACTION:renameHowBox:SUBPAGE_ID:HOW_ID:NEW_LABEL]. This–Then links: - This–Then links are formal directional links between boxes on This–Then Pages. - Links can be within the same This–Then Page or across different This–Then Pages. - Links cannot target How Pages or Documentation Pages. - Each link has an explicit direction displayed as Box A → Box B. - The direction arrow is clickable to reverse it. - Up to one link in each direction between any pair of boxes is allowed (maximum two links between a pair total). - Same-column links are allowed. - Feedback loops are allowed — the same box may appear in both the left count (incoming) and right count (outgoing). - Clicking a left or right count on a box opens a list of connected items showing: connected box title and page name. Clicking an item in the list navigates to that box. - Link creation and management for This–Then Boxes is done exclusively through the count affordance popups (left or right count circles for This–Then links, bottom square for How links). The box details pane does not contain link-creation sections. The picker in each popup groups boxes under page name, pages in tab order, boxes in their page visual/logical order (not alphabetical). - The board chat can manage This–Then links via: [ACTION:addTTLink:FROM_BOX_ID:TO_BOX_ID], [ACTION:removeTTLink:LINK_ID], [ACTION:flipTTLink:LINK_ID]. - This–Then links are preserved in saved boards, localStorage, and DOVIEW-STATE snapshots. - This–Then link tags, where present, are stored on the link as an optional `tagIds` array. Preserve it when continuing boards; do not make `tagIds` required and do not invent new tag structures. - Each This–Then link can have Measures and Evaluation Questions attached to the link itself (independently of any Measures/Evaluation Questions linked to its source or target boxes). This is managed from the This–Then link detail popup only — How links do not have this feature in the current release. See Link details below. Measures and Evaluation Questions: - Measures and Evaluation Questions are board-level reusable objects, not box-local notes. - Measures use stable canonical IDs: M001, M002, M003, etc. Evaluation Questions use stable canonical IDs: EQ001, EQ002, EQ003, etc. IDs are board-global and never renumbered after deletion. Newly generated configs must use these exact canonical IDs in item definitions, box/link associations, and Documentation Page clone keys. - Each Measure has: ID, title, Display Text, notes 1, notes 2, notes 3, an optional `trafficLight` metadata field, and a linked boxes list. - Each Evaluation Question has: ID, question text, Display Text, notes 1, notes 2, notes 3, an optional `trafficLight` metadata field, and a linked boxes list. - Measure and Evaluation Question `trafficLight` values use the accepted Traffic Light values `green`, `greenYellow`, `yellow`, `yellowRed`, `red`, `grey`, or empty/absent for unset. `grey` is a deliberate selected value, not unset. This is metadata for the existing Measure or Evaluation Question item; do not invent alternate field names and do not add `displayText` fields to Measures or Evaluation Questions. - This–Then Boxes, How Boxes, and Final Outcome boxes all have Measures and Evaluation Questions fields in their detail panes. - Each field allows: search/select existing items, link one or more existing items, create new item, view all items. - At the end of each picker: "Create new measure" / "Create new evaluation question" and "View all Measures" / "View all Evaluation Questions". - If a new item is created from within a box picker, it defaults to being associated with that box (user-facing wording is associated/association for Measures and Evaluation Questions; structural box-to-box links keep links/linked terminology). If created from the board-level registry, it may exist with no associations. - Board-level registries (accessible from the header bar) list all Measures or all Evaluation Questions showing ID, title/text, association status (associated count or "not associated"), and a delete button (user-facing status wording is "associated" / "not associated"; internal data shape is unchanged). Clicking an item opens its detail pane. - Measures and Evaluation Questions are edited at their own detail panes (source of truth), not through copied text elsewhere. Each detail pane includes a delete button at the bottom. - Linked items shown on box panes are clickable — clicking opens that item's detail pane. - The board chat can manage Measures and Evaluation Questions via ACTION commands (see below). - Measures and Evaluation Questions are preserved in saved boards, localStorage, and DOVIEW-STATE snapshots. - When a Measure or Evaluation Question is edited, created, associated, dis-associated, or deleted, all visible references (under-box display, entry panel associated items, clones) update immediately without requiring the user to leave the page and come back. The current page, open box selection, and scroll position are preserved as far as practical. (user-facing wording uses associated/association for Measures and Evaluation Questions; structural box-to-box links keep links/linked terminology.) - Measures and Evaluation Questions can also be attached to This–Then links (see Link details). Deleting a Measure or Evaluation Question also removes any links to it held on This–Then links, not only the links held on boxes. How links are NOT supported for this feature in the current build. - The current release does not include clones inside box notes or Measure/EQ notes, named/saved multiple views, per-page custom view overrides, reordering of under-box display types, or richer list browsing and link panes. These are outside the current V1.4.4 feature set. Generated new boards still use the explicit `savedState.viewSettings` rule above, including standard setup choice 7d, unless the user asked for different View items. - Clear All and Restore Defaults: on This–Then and How Pages, the Page View settings panel provides two controls below the list of toggles — Clear All (turns off every item shown in that page type's View list) and Restore Defaults (restores the built-in defaults for that page type as described above). These are view changes only, not data deletion. Clear All does not delete content or links. - Page View settings are presentation only — hiding an item does not remove it from the model. - Page View settings are saved with the board and restored on reload. On the Final Outcomes page, under-box blocks match the width of the Final Outcome box above them. - If a box has no content for a display type, nothing is shown (no empty placeholders). - Multiple Measures or Evaluation Questions appear in one scrolling block each. - Measure blocks show: M001 Title. Top and bottom Vertical Link affordances are part of the normal hierarchy model and are not part of this Cross-Link toggle. - Jump affordance visual language: the on-box jump affordance is a small down triangle in the lower-right of the box, with no enclosing box, matching the visual language used for overview-page drill-down boxes. It replaces the earlier boxed right-arrow jump affordance. The down triangle reads as drill-down / open subpage rather than as a link affordance, reducing clashes with the Cross-Link affordance on the right border. If a box also has a hasSubpage drill-down triangle, the jump triangle is offset to the left to avoid overlap. - All affordances are small and clean, extending slightly beyond the box edge for visual clarity. Counts are also accessible via tooltip. How links: - How Links connect How Boxes to allowed This–Then Boxes or How Boxes. - A How Link means: this How Box helps make that target box happen. Links from How Pages with no level are Cross-Links. Each How Page has a numeric level editable directly in the board UI, with the option to have no level. A How Page with no level does not participate in the normal vertical up/down hierarchy logic but still loads and works safely. Link-affordance popups filter their target lists by direction: on a Level 1 How Box, the top-square popup offers upward targets; on Level 2+ How Boxes, the top-square popup offers only adjacent higher How-level targets. The bottom-square popup offers only adjacent-lower-How-level targets. The Cross-Link square popup offers same-page How Boxes, no-level How Boxes, non-adjacent-level How Boxes, and (for Level 2+ How Boxes) This–Then Boxes. This is a general board-defined hierarchy concept, not hard-coded page types, and it remains compatible with future How Page types such as projects, roles, resources, capabilities, and governance. - Same-page How→How links: same-page How→How links are excluded from the Vertical Link top/bottom count model. They appear in the Cross-Link square on the right border of How Boxes. This keeps the Vertical Link counts clean while providing a clear place for same-page relationships. - Cross-Link affordance: How Boxes have a small square on the right middle of the right border, visually distinct from the Vertical Link squares, appearing dark when Cross-Links exist and outlined when inactive. This–Then Boxes also have a right-border Cross-Link affordance for Cross-Links from How Boxes. On both page types the affordance is hidden by default and revealed via a Page View toggle. The affordance does not display a number — it only communicates presence/absence. Cross-Links include same-page How→How links, links to How Pages with no level, links to non-adjacent How levels, and Level 2+ How→This–Then links. Link details (first-class link objects): - Links (both This–Then links and How links) are first-class objects with their own details panes. - Each link has: source box, target box, link type (this_then or how), Display Text, Notes 1, Notes 2, Notes 3, Notes 4, Notes 5 where supported by the current release UI. - Each link's details pane shows a header with the link direction (e.g. "Box A → Box B"), the link type badge, and editable fields for Display Text and the available Notes fields shown by the current release UI. - URLs in link Display Text and Notes fields are clickable in display mode only, following the same safe URL rules as the rest of the system. - Link details panes can be opened from: the Links registry in the header bar, the ⓘ button on link rows in box entry panels, the ⓘ button on items in link count list modals, and from global search results matching link text. - Link details are preserved in saved boards, localStorage, Copy HTML Board, and DOVIEW-STATE snapshots. - Link detail fields (mainText, notes1, notes2, notes3) are stored directly on each link object. Links remain the source of truth for link direction, source, and target — the link details pane does not change box data. - Older boards without link detail fields load with empty strings for all link text fields (backward compatible). - This–Then link Associated Measures and Associated Evaluation Questions : a This–Then link's detail popup includes an Associated Measures section and an Associated Evaluation Questions section below the Notes fields. These sections follow the same general pattern used on box panes: a picker to select an existing Measure or Evaluation Question, an "Associate" button to associate it with this structural link, per-item Remove association controls, and "Create new measure" / "Create new evaluation question" and "View all Measures" / "View all Evaluation Questions" footer links. Clicking an associated Measure or Evaluation Question opens its detail pane (closing the link popup). TT-link Measure/EQ associations are stored in two arrays (`measures` and `evalQuestions`) on the This–Then link object itself, persist through save/reload, localStorage, Copy HTML Board, and DOVIEW-STATE snapshots, and are cleaned up automatically when a Measure or Evaluation Question is deleted. How links do NOT have this feature in the current release — their detail popups only show Display Text and Notes fields. - This–Then link tags are optional `tagIds` on This–Then links and are shown/edited only in the normal This–Then link detail popup. They are preserved through save/reload, Copy HTML Board, and read-only copies. Do not show link tags beside arrows, in hover popups, or as filters, and do not add new tags to Vertical Links or Cross-Links. - Visual linked-box reveal mode (border-click): clicking the border area of a This–Then Box (within ~10px of any edge) activates reveal mode, which visually marks all boxes linked to the selected box via This–Then links. The selected box receives the strongest highlight style (3px dark border with subtle shadow, same as inspect-home). Linked boxes receive the same greyed secondary highlight as in count-click inspection mode (2px lighter grey border with slight background tint). On linked boxes, a small triangle marker appears: a left-pointing triangle on the left side for boxes the selected box links outward to, and a right-pointing triangle on the right side for boxes that link inward to the selected box. Boxes linked in both directions show both markers. Reveal markers apply only to This–Then Boxes. In addition, any How Boxes that act on the selected This–Then Box (via How links) are highlighted with the same darker-border treatment (not triangle markers). When a reveal state is active, clicking on one of the small directional arrows on a revealed grey box opens the link-info/evidence popup for that specific link, providing a direct route to the evidence. Reveal persists across page navigation (so linked boxes on other This–Then Pages and How Boxes on How Pages show their markers/highlights when those pages are viewed) and clears when the user clicks empty space on the board. Clicking the body (non-border area) of a This–Then Box opens the normal details pane as before. Clicking a How Box opens its details pane and also activates the same secondary linked-box highlight mode used elsewhere: the clicked How Box receives the strongest home-box highlight (3px dark border with subtle shadow), while connected This–Then Boxes (via How links) and connected How Boxes (via How-to-How links) receive the weaker secondary linked-box styling (2px lighter grey border plus a slight grey background tint). No left/right triangle markers are added for the How-origin reveal path. How Box highlight also persists across pages and clears on clicking empty space. The left/right triangle reveal semantics do not apply to How Boxes. - Visual linked-box reveal mode (count-click / relationship inspection): clicking a link count circle (This–Then counts, How counts, or Vertical Link counts) enters a relationship-inspection state distinct from the border-click reveal. In inspection mode, the home box receives a strong 3px dark border with subtle shadow, while linked boxes receive a weaker 2px grey border with slight background tint. Clicking a linked box name in the popup navigates to that box and scrolls it into view, preserving the inspection highlights. In inspection mode, linked boxes also show small directional arrows (left-pointing for outgoing links, right-pointing for incoming links). Clicking on one of these arrows on a revealed grey box opens the link-info/evidence popup for that specific link, providing a direct route to the evidence without needing to go through the count popup. If a box shows arrows on both ends because both directions are relevant, each arrow opens the evidence for its own specific direction. The inspection state persists across page navigation (returning to the original page still shows the home box and linked boxes highlighted) and clears only on intentional exit (clicking empty space, border-clicking a box, clicking a box body to open its entry panel, or selecting a new count-click set). Border-click reveal and count-click inspection are mutually exclusive — activating one clears the other. - Link count popup headings: when a user clicks a link count circle to open the list of connected boxes, the box name in the popup heading is displayed in italics for readability (e.g. "*Box name* makes these THIS-THEN boxes happen"). Links registry: - A board-level "Links" registry is accessible from the header bar, alongside Measures and Eval Questions. - The Links registry lists all structural box-to-box links in the board: This–Then Links, Vertical Links, and Cross-Links. It is not used for Measures/Evaluation Question associations, which use the Measures and Eval Questions registries instead. - Each row shows: link type badge, source box name, → arrow, target box name, page name(s), and a short snippet of link Display Text if present. Type badges: "This–Then" (orange) for This–Then Links, "How" (blue) for Vertical Links, and "Cross-Link" (slate) for Cross-Links. Documentation Page clones: - Documentation Pages can contain clone blocks — linked copies of selected board elements that update automatically when the source changes. - Clones are inserted via the "Clone" button in the Documentation Page edit toolbar, which opens a clone chooser. The chooser allows the user to select a source type, then pick a specific source object. - Clonable source types: page title, box title, box Display Text, Measure (ID and title only), Evaluation Question (ID and question text only), and runtime-surviving links. - Clone blocks are rendered as block-level elements on the page with a light grey background. Users can mix normal rich text and clone blocks freely. - Clones are one-way: source changes update the clone display. Clone text is not directly editable. - Clicking a clone in read mode navigates to the source page, opens the source box detail pane, opens the Measure/Evaluation Question detail pane, or opens the link detail popup as appropriate. - If a clone's source is deleted, the clone shows a broken-reference state ("[Source deleted]") with visual styling until the user removes it manually. - In edit mode, each clone block shows a ✕ remove button to delete the clone from the page. - Clones are stored as lightweight HTML markers (data attributes referencing source type and key) within the Documentation Page content. No text is duplicated — source text is resolved live on each render. This keeps board size small and ensures clones always reflect current source content. - Clone data is preserved automatically via the existing docContent persistence in saved boards, localStorage, Copy HTML Board, and DOVIEW-STATE snapshots. - Measures and Evaluation Questions cloned onto a Documentation Page appear as their ID and title/question text only (e.g. "M001 Revenue growth" or "EQ001 Did we achieve X?"). Clicking them opens their detail pane. - Links cloned onto a Documentation Page must be links that remain after runtime cleanup. This–Then link clones must have ordinary This–Then boxes at both endpoints; links involving Final Outcome boxes are not valid This–Then link-clone sources. - The current release does not include clones inside box notes or Measure/EQ notes — only on Documentation Pages. Global search (v1): - A board-level search feature accessible from the "🔍 Search" link in the header bar. - Opens a modal with a search input field. This includes full URLs (https://...) and bare domains (e.g. doviewplanning.org). On Documentation Pages, bare domains and URLs within the saved HTML content are automatically detected and made clickable in read mode even if the user did not insert them as explicit links in the editor. While editing (textareas, inline edits), raw text is shown to prevent accidental navigation. Only safe schemes are allowed (https, http, mailto). Bare domains are linked as https://. Dangerous schemes (JavaScript, data, etc.) are not linkified. - Traffic light cascade based on dependency map - Silent AI classification of Notes 4 entries (defer/blocker/green) - Double-click any box to edit its label text inline (Enter to save, Escape to cancel). While inline editing is active, clicks inside the editable text reposition the cursor without exiting edit mode — the box click handler is suppressed when the target is contentEditable. If the user deletes all text so that the label is empty, then clicks away or presses Enter, the box label persists as intentionally empty — it does not repopulate with the previous text or silently restore a placeholder from the previous saved value. This applies to both This–Then Boxes and How Boxes. - Double-click any column heading to edit it inline (Enter to save, Escape to cancel) - Double-click any final outcome to edit its label text inline (Enter to save, Escape to cancel) - Double-click any page tab to rename it inline (Enter to save, Escape to cancel). While inline editing is active, clicks inside the editable text reposition the cursor without triggering page navigation — the tab click handler uses a short delay that is cancelled by the double-click. - Double-click the page name in a This–Then, How, or Documentation Page's top page bar to rename that page inline (Enter to save, Escape to cancel). This edits the same underlying page label used by the tab, so the tab and bar stay in sync after rename, and the rename persists across save/reload. - Double-click the board title in the header to rename it inline (Enter to save, Escape to cancel) - Two "+" buttons to add a new page: one on the left side of the tab bar immediately after Final Outcomes (always visible even when tabs scroll), and one at the far right end of the tab bar. Both open the same page-type chooser with three options: This–Then Page, How Page, or Documentation Page. After the user selects one, the page is created with that type and the board navigates to it. Page type is fixed once created (no conversion). Default page titles use the pattern "This→Then: New page", "How: New page", or "Documentation: New page" — but the user can edit the entire title freely afterward (the prefix is only a default, not enforced). - Page info bar below the header shows the page name with a ◄ triangle to move the page left in the tab order (cycles to the end when at the start), a "Page info" link, a "Delete" link for subpages (requires confirmation), and an ↩ undo button (greyed out when nothing to undo). The bar does not include a "Page:" prefix. For How Pages, the page info bar also shows the page's How level (e.g. "Level 2" or "No level") with ▲ and ▼ controls to move the page up or down in the How level hierarchy, and a toggle control to set or remove the level. A How Page with no level does not participate in the normal vertical up/down hierarchy logic but still loads and works safely. Moving a page's level swaps it with the adjacent How Page at the target level. The controls are disabled at the boundaries (▲ disabled at level 1, ▼ disabled at the highest level). The level concept is browser-editable — users can understand and change the relative order of How Pages without using board chat. - Entry panel structural buttons: when a box is selected, the entry panel includes structural editing buttons allowing changes directly from the board without using the chat. For This–Then subpage boxes: "+ Add box", "+ Add column", "+ Add Display Text", "Move up", "Move down", "Delete box", "Delete column". For How Boxes: "+ Add box after", "+ Add Display Text", "Move earlier", "Move later", "Move to first", "Move to last", "Delete box". For final outcome boxes: "+ Add", "+ Add Display Text", "Move up", "Move down", "Delete". All delete actions require confirmation. "+ Add column" creates a column called "New column" with one starter box called "New box" to the right of the current column. "+ Add box" adds a "New box" at the top of the column (or a new final outcome). The Final Outcomes page always shows a page-level "+ Add final outcome" button next to the heading, so final outcomes can be added even when the list is empty. "+ Add Display Text" creates an empty Display Text field for the box, editable from the detail pane. "Move up" and "Move down" reorder the selected box within its column or the final outcomes list; they are disabled when the box is already at the top or bottom respectively. Double-click new boxes, column headings, and page tabs to rename them. - Deleting a box removes that box's This–Then links, How links, and any links from that box to Measures or Evaluation Questions. It does not delete the board-level Measure or Evaluation Question objects themselves. Never renumber after deletion. - Deleting a page removes that page's boxes, page info, documentation content for that page, and any links attached to that page's boxes. It does not delete board-level Measures or Evaluation Questions. Never renumber after deletion. - Deleting a Measure or Evaluation Question: if the item is linked to boxes, the user is warned and shown the linked boxes. If confirmed, those links are automatically removed from all boxes. Any attachments of the item on This–Then links are also removed automatically as part of the same delete. The item is deleted from the board-level registry. IDs are never renumbered after deletion. - If a clone source is deleted, the clone remains visible on Documentation Pages as a broken reference marker until the user removes it manually later. - Safe deletion and broken-clone states survive save board, reload board, copy board as HTML, and reopening saved HTML. - Undo fully restores all state including links, Measures, Evaluation Questions, board info, page info, and documentation content. - Older boards without pageType still load as This–Then boards. Board info and Page info: - Board info: a clickable link in the top header opens a modal for notes about the board as a whole — overall assumptions, cross-page links, evidence, caveats, definitions, and URLs. This is a lightweight enhancement to the DoView minimum spec that gives users a place to record evidence about relationships without complicating the core box structure. More advanced formal linking systems may be built by others later, but are not part of the minimum spec. - Page info: a "Page info" link in a bar below the header (showing "Page: [page name] · Page info") opens a modal for notes about that specific page — evidence about links between boxes on this page or between this page and other pages. Every page including Overview and Final Outcomes has its own Page info. - Both Board info and Page info popups use a simple view/edit pattern in normal editable boards. They open in rendered view mode by default — the saved text is rendered once with clickable URLs (via the existing linkify display block), and an Edit button is shown alongside Close. Clicking Edit replaces the rendered view with the editable textarea and shows Save / Cancel controls. Save commits the new text and returns to rendered view (the modal stays open so the user can immediately see the saved text rendered with clickable URLs). Cancel discards unsaved changes and returns to rendered view, preserving the previous saved text. Empty fields show a modest empty-state line ("No board info yet. Click Edit to add some.") rather than a duplicate textarea-plus-rendered-block, keeping the popup clean for never-filled-in fields. In read-only copies, only the rendered view is shown — Edit, Save, and the textarea are hidden, URLs in the rendered view remain clickable, and the popup can be dismissed with Close. This replaces the previous behavior where the popup showed both the rendered display and the editable textarea side by side, which was confusing because the same saved text appeared twice. - Board info edit mode also includes a compact "Top right text (optional)" field below the main Board info textarea. This single-line input edits the same topRightText saved-state value as the existing Top right text editor modal, so users can add or change Top right text from Board info without needing the page-info-bar affordance. The "Top right text (optional)" field appears in Board info edit mode only — it does NOT appear in Page info edit mode (Page info is per-page; Top right text is board-level). - Both are plain text fields, not structured data. Users can simply name relevant boxes or pages in free text. - Both are saved in board state, preserved in downloaded HTML, and included when syncing to the main AI chat. - The board chat AI can read and write Board info and Page info via ACTION commands: [ACTION:setBoardInfo:TEXT] and [ACTION:setPageInfo:PAGE_ID:TEXT]. Chat with board: - Floating "Chat with board" button (no emoji) - AI can modify the board via [ACTION:command:args] tags - State commands execute immediately (past tense in chat: "Done"); structural commands require user confirmation (future tense in chat: "will be added", NOT "has been added") - Thinking indicator: animated dots show while waiting for AI response - Undo system (type "undo" or click ↩ button) - Supports user-configured custom OpenAI-compatible AI endpoints only; there is no Claude/Anthropic-host automatic connection - Full command reference included in system prompt automatically - Token-saving optimisation: by default the board chat only sends the current subpage state to the AI, with summary lines for other subpages. If the user includes "whole board", "all pages", or similar in their message, the full board state is sent for that request. Overview and Final Outcomes pages always send full state. Chat history is limited to 10 messages. - DoView methodology awareness: the board chat AI always receives a compressed summary of DoView methodology rules (outcome phrasing, This→Then logic, vary structure by domain). When the user requests structural changes (adding pages, boxes, columns), the full DoView methodology rules are sent so the AI builds properly structured content. - Auto-color subpages: when the board chat adds a new subpage, the engine automatically assigns an unused color from the palette. The AI is instructed to never ask the user to choose colors. - Page type awareness: the board chat uses [ACTION:addSubpage:LABEL:PAGE_TYPE] where PAGE_TYPE is this_then, how, or documentation. When the user asks to add a page WITHOUT specifying a page type AND without a populated-page trigger ("full DoView", "complete DoView", "full logic", "full populated page", "populate it", "add DoView This–Then Boxes", "create a This–Then logic for X", "add a This–Then Page", or "add a page and fill it in"), the board chat asks the page-type clarification question and waits for the user's answer before creating anything. When the user has clearly specified the type (e.g. "add a This–Then Page", "add a How Page", "add a Documentation Page") OR has clearly triggered populated-page behavior, the board chat goes ahead with the appropriate proposal without asking. Explicit type wins: "make a Documentation Page with a full DoView" still creates a Documentation Page. - Populated vs blank This–Then Page creation in the board chat: when the user asks the board chat to add a NEW This–Then Page about a topic — phrasings such as "add a This–Then Page about X", "add a new This–Then Page about X", "populate it", "add DoView This–Then Boxes", "create a This–Then logic for X", "add a page and fill it in", and clear populated-page phrasings such as "full DoView", "complete DoView", "full logic", "full populated page", "map this out", "build the full logic", "build out this page", "fill out this page", or "turn this into a full page" — this is treated as a POPULATED-page request. The board chat must emit, in ONE response, the FULL set of action tags so the engine can apply the populated page in a single OK confirmation step: one [ACTION:addSubpage:LABEL:this_then], plus enough [ACTION:renameColumn:NEW_PAGE_ID:0:HEADING] / [ACTION:addColumn:NEW_PAGE_ID:COLUMN_INDEX:HEADING] tags to reach AT LEAST 3 columns total, plus enough [ACTION:addBox:NEW_PAGE_ID:COLUMN_INDEX:LABEL] tags to reach AT LEAST 6 boxes total spread across those columns, all using compact DoView outcome phrasing for box labels and column headings that name real causal stages for the domain. Boxes flow left-to-right in plausible This→Then causal order; final/right-hand boxes represent later or higher-level outcomes for the page. A one-box placeholder is NOT acceptable for a populated-page request. Only when the user EXPLICITLY asks for a "blank", "starter", "empty", or "page shell" page does the board chat emit just an addSubpage with no populating tags; in that case the engine creates a blank starter page as before. For ambiguous page creation, ask what type of page the user wants before proposing changes. The engine validates proposed action sets before queuing them and rejects invalid proposals with no changes made. This preserves the existing confirmation and transaction behavior without changing the saved-state/schema. Persistence: - localStorage for session persistence - Save / Download Board button opens a modal with Save to a File You Choose where the browser supports it and Download a New Copy as the fallback. Both paths save complete {B, SP, FO} state as self-contained HTML using the normal filename format BoardName_2026-03-28_9-30am.html (name + date + time); after saving or downloading, workflow messages remind the user how to reopen the saved file. - Copy HTML Board button opens a popup with the full board HTML that the user can copy and paste into a text file saved with a .html extension, as a fallback when Save / Download Board does not work reliably - Create and Save New Empty Board button opens a modal that creates a separate fresh starter board HTML file without replacing the current board in the browser. The starter board contains an Overview page, a Final Outcomes page, a This–Then Page 1 with one minimal starter box in the top-left, a How Page 1 with default starter How Boxes each labelled with the standard How-page empty/new wording "How (action, person, team, unit, organization, capability, …)", and a blank Documentation Page 1. The modal asks for a new board name. That name becomes the new board title, the filename-safe slug is derived from it, and later Save / Download Board, Copy HTML Board, and Create Read-Only Copy exports from the opened new board preserve that title and slug. Empty or whitespace-only names fall back to "Untitled DoView Board" and a safe untitled slug. The modal uses the same save/download option-card pattern as Save / Download Board: "Save to a File You Choose" is enabled where the browser supports the file-save picker, and "Download a New Empty Board" remains available as the fallback. Creating the separate new empty board file uses empty board info, page info, links, Measures, Evaluation Questions, documentation content, transient selection/highlight state, undo stack, temporary source-reference box, and jump/reveal/inspect state, and creates a fresh board instance identity for the new file. The current board tab can stay open. The user opens the saved or downloaded new .html file when they want to start editing the new board. - Create Read-Only Copy button produces a separate read-only distributed copy of the current board as a new HTML file, for sharing an agreed board with a funder, manager, contractor, or other external party as a fixed reference version. The normal editable board in the current browser is unaffected — the read-only copy is a separate file, not a conversion of the working board. The saved file carries a marker in its embedded state that tells the engine, on load, to disable content editing through the UI (box editing, link editing, page editing or reordering, traffic light changes, priority changes, board-chat editing, structural edits, etc.). Navigation, links and jumps, search, print, and Page View settings still work in the read-only copy. Page View controls are fully usable in read-only mode — opening, changing, and saving Page View settings (on This–Then, How, and Final Outcomes pages where Page View exists) applies the visible change in the session; changing View is treated as a viewing/display control, not a content edit, and does not re-enable editing. Board chat is hidden in the read-only copy. The read-only copy is clearly labelled in the top bar with a modest "Read-Only Board" mode label — rendered as a small subtle-outline pill inline with the top utility links (alongside Board info, Measures, …, Get training), not under the title. The label is intentionally low-contrast and reads as a status pill, not as a clickable utility link or a warning banner. The label carries the tooltip "Editing is disabled through the board interface. This is not security protection; someone with technical skills could still edit the HTML." so users are not misled into treating read-only copies as tamper-proof. The label only appears in read-only copies (gated by body.is-readonly); normal editable boards do not show it. There is exactly one read-only label in the UI (no duplicate "Read-Only Copy" elsewhere in the chrome). The browser tab title gets a " — Read-only copy" suffix. The read-only bottom bar is cleaned up — edit-oriented actions (Update board changes to Main AI Chat, Create and Save New Empty Board, Create Read-Only Copy itself) are hidden; only Save / Download Board, Copy HTML Board, Print Board, the Sources link, and the save-state indicator remain. The save-state indicator in the read-only copy reads " · Read-only copy" rather than any misleading dirty/unsaved wording. Popups still open and are viewable in the read-only copy (Board info, Page info, Measure detail, Evaluation Question detail, Link detail, Sources, Clone chooser, etc.), but their text/content fields are clearly non-editable — textareas and text inputs are in a read-only state, contenteditable regions lose editability, and edit/add/delete/save controls inside those popups are hidden or disabled as appropriate; the visual styling of non-editable fields (dimmed background, default cursor, neutralised focus) makes it obvious that the field cannot be typed into or deleted. Links in popup/display content remain clickable in display mode. The global search input remains a live filtering input in the read-only copy (it is a viewing/filtering control, not a content field). The Sources popup is view-only in the read-only copy (rows render as view-only — title shown as plain text, URL shown as a clickable Open link or as the URL itself if there is no title; Add source, Save, and per-row remove are hidden; Close remains), while remaining editable in the normal board. This is a simple read-only distributed copy/export mode only — not a permissions/roles system, not a partial-edit/annotation mode. The "Read-Only Board" label is a UI-only mode indicator and is not a security guarantee — read-only mode is not a security boundary; production use needs appropriate controls outside the board file. Existing saved boards without the read-only marker continue to load as normal editable boards. - Print Board button generates a landscape print view in a new tab showing the board title, Final Outcomes, overview tile grid, and each subpage on its own page with This→Then layout (or How grid layout for How Pages, or Documentation content for Documentation Pages), Traffic Lights, priority badges, page-type labels in each subpage title block (This→Then, How, Documentation, Final Outcomes), printed page numbers and page titles (shown as a footer line at the bottom of each printed page, e.g. "Page 1 · Final Outcomes & Overview", "Page 2 · Subpage Name"), and a standard footer. All subpages use uniform scaling (based on the largest diagram) so fonts are consistent across pages. The print view uses @page { size: 297mm 210mm } for reliable landscape orientation including on Mac. Page breaks happen at the print-page-wrap boundary so there are no blank pages between intended printed board pages/subpages. THIS–THEN LINK REVEAL / NAVIGATION BEHAVIOUR: When a user clicks a This–Then link count and opens the popup list of linked boxes, that begins a temporary relationship-inspection state. The home box (the box whose count was clicked) must have the strongest highlight style — a 3px dark border with subtle shadow. Linked boxes must have a clearly weaker secondary highlight — a 2px lighter grey border with slight background tint. The home box border should be darker and more prominent than the linked-box border. Cross-page navigation from the popup must navigate to the destination page and visibly reveal the destination box with its secondary highlight, persisting long enough for the user to orient. The relationship-inspection state persists across page navigation — returning to the original page tab preserves the original highlights. The state clears only when the user intentionally exits it (clicking empty space, border-clicking a box, clicking a box body, or selecting a new count-click set). B. THIS–THEN LINK COUNT / POPUP USABILITY: Count-click popups remain the main interaction pattern for link inspection. Clicking a box name in the popup navigates to the linked box. Navigation alone is not enough — the destination box must be visibly revealed and it must be obvious why the user was taken there. C. HOW PAGE HIERARCHY DIRECTION: The system supports a light, board-defined level structure for How Pages (e.g. level 1 = project page, level 2 = team page, level 3 = person page). A project box can use a Vertical Link upward to a This–Then Page and downward to a team box; a team box can use a Vertical Link upward to a project box and downward to a person box. This is a general board-defined How hierarchy, not hard-coded page types. Each How Page has a numeric howLevel property editable directly in the board UI via the page info bar, with the option to have no level. A How Page with no level does not participate in the normal vertical up/down hierarchy logic but still loads and works safely. Vertical Links go to the adjacent level above or below where allowed; Cross-Links go to same-page, no-level, non-adjacent-level How Boxes, or This–Then Boxes where allowed. The level concept is page-level, not per-box. Old boards without howLevel auto-assign levels based on How Page order. D. HOW→HOW LINKS ON THE SAME PAGE: Same-page How→How links are not part of the normal Vertical Link top/bottom count model. They appear in the Cross-Link square on the right border of How Boxes. They do not corrupt or confuse the top/bottom Vertical Link counts. E. CROSS-LINKS — DIRECTIONAL ASSUMPTION: Cross-Links are neutral relationships. No left versus right directional meaning is assumed. Cross-Links include same-page How→How links, links to How Pages with no level, and links to non-adjacent How levels. They are not forced into incoming/outgoing side-count logic. F. CROSS-LINK AFFORDANCE: How Boxes have a small square on the right middle of the right border, visually distinct from Vertical Link squares, appearing dark when Cross-Links exist and outlined when inactive. Clicking it opens a popup for managing Cross-Links with a + control for adding new Cross-Links. This–Then Boxes also support a right-border Cross-Link affordance where allowed. G. HOW PAGE NAVIGATION TO THIS–THEN PAGES: When a user clicks a How Box, the clicked How Box receives the strongest home-box highlight, and linked This–Then Boxes (reached via How links) and linked How Boxes (reached via How-to-How links) receive the same weaker secondary linked-box styling (grey border plus a slight grey background tint) used elsewhere for inspect-linked boxes. No TT left/right triangle markers are added to the How-origin reveal path. Cross-page persistence and clearing behavior matches the rest of the reveal/inspect model. H. LINK AFFORDANCE ALWAYS-VISIBLE AND POPUP-BASED LINK CREATION: When a link affordance toggle is on, the affordance is always shown: filled/dark with count when links exist, empty/outlined when no links exist. Both states are clickable. Clicking opens a popup showing existing links (if any) with a picker for selecting a target. The popup has “Add” (orange, on the left) and “Cancel” (on the right) buttons at the bottom. This applies to This–Then count circles, Vertical Link count squares on This–Then Boxes, Vertical Link count squares on How Boxes, and the Cross-Link square. I. STALE LOCAL-STATE / LINK-COUNT MISMATCH PREVENTION: Each board carries a boardInstanceId. When loading from localStorage, the engine checks that the boardInstanceId matches. If it does not match, the stale localStorage is skipped and the embedded board data is used. This prevents count/popup disagreements caused by old localStorage overriding newer embedded board data. Links pointing to missing boxes are purged during load. J. THIS–THEN REVEAL WITH CLICKABLE ARROWS: In count-click inspection mode, linked boxes show directional arrow markers (reveal-out, reveal-in) in addition to the inspect-linked styling. Clicking near an arrow on a revealed box opens the link-info/evidence popup for that specific link, providing a direct route to the evidence without going through the count popup. In border-click reveal mode, all linked boxes (both incoming and outgoing) are shown with the same greyed inspect-linked styling as in count-click mode, and clicking near an arrow also opens the relevant link detail. K. BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY / SAVED BOARDS: All new state and logic preserves backward compatibility with existing saved boards. Older boards without new fields fail safely. Old structures are not rewritten unnecessarily. Boards without howLevel auto-assign levels based on How Page order. Boards without showLinkInfoOnHover default to hiding link Display Text and link Traffic Lights on hover. Boards without showLateralHow default to hiding Cross-Links until their Page View option is enabled. Boards without boardInstanceId generate one on first load. Boards without jumpToPage on boxes load safely with no jump arrows. This–Then links without measures/evalQuestions arrays load with empty arrays. L. EMPTY BOX-TEXT PERSISTENCE: If the user double-clicks a box label and deletes all text so the label is empty, then clicks away or presses Enter, the box label must persist as intentionally empty. It must not repopulate with the previous text or silently restore a placeholder. This applies to both This–Then Boxes and How Boxes. Backward compatibility is preserved — older boards with text values still render correctly. M. PAGE VIEW NAMING REGIME: For This–Then Pages: "Show any link Display Text/Traffic Lights on mouse over of black link arrow", "Show This–Then Link counts (just between boxes on This–Then Pages)", "Show Vertical Link counts from How Boxes (to check alignment)", and "Show Cross-Links to How Boxes". For How Pages: "Show Vertical Link counts to This–Then Boxes or How Boxes (to check alignment)" and "Show Cross-Links to This–Then Boxes or How Boxes". The Vertical Link labels cover the strict hierarchical top/bottom system (adjacent-level How ↔ adjacent-level How, and Level 1 How ↔ This–Then). The Cross-Link labels cover the right-border Cross-Link affordance. Older wording is replaced by the names above and must not be reintroduced. Page View menu order on This–Then Pages: Show Traffic Lights, Show priorities, Show Display Text under Boxes, Show any link Display Text/Traffic Lights on mouse over of black link arrow, then remaining items, with the Cross-Link option last. N. LINK-POPUP ADD-FLOW MODEL: All link-creation popups (This–Then count popups, Vertical Link popups, Cross-Link popups, and bottom How-count popups on This–Then Boxes) use a consistent add-flow model: the popup shows a picker (dropdown) for selecting a target. At the bottom of the popup there are two buttons: “Add” (orange, on the left) and “Cancel” (on the right). Selecting a target in the dropdown does not show an Add control next to the box name. The user clicks “Add” at the bottom to confirm. There is no separate confusing “+ Add” step after target selection. This applies uniformly to all link-affordance popups. O. LINK MANAGEMENT FROM POPUPS ONLY: Link creation and management is done exclusively through the count/square popup affordances. The old “Link to another This Then box” and “How Boxes linking to this box” sections at the bottom of the box details pane have been removed. The details pane retains all other content: entries, Traffic Lights, priorities, structural buttons, Display Text, jump-to-page, Measures, and Evaluation Questions. P. FRESH UNIQUE SLUGS FOR NEW BOARDS: Each newly built board gets a fresh unique slug by appending a timestamp-based suffix to the base slug. This prevents localStorage collisions between different boards that happen to share the same base slug. Boards loaded from savedState or EMBEDDED_STATE keep their existing slug. This works together with boardInstanceId for stale-state prevention. Q. LINK-POPUP TYPOGRAPHY: In link detail popups, box names are displayed in italics. The second box name starts on a new line. The type badge (This–Then Link or How Link) appears once, not duplicated as both a heading and body text. R. VERTICAL LINK COUNT SHAPES: All Vertical Link counts use squares, not circles. On This–Then Pages, the bottom How-link count is a numbered square and counts only strict incoming Vertical Links (i.e. links from Level 1 How Boxes). On How Pages, the top (upward) and bottom (downward) counts are numbered squares and count only strictly adjacent Vertical Links. Vertical Link counts must register symmetrically on BOTH source and target sides of a Vertical Link: when a Level 1 How Box links up to a This–Then Box, the count shows on both the Level 1 How Box's top square and the This–Then Box's bottom square; when a Level-N How Box is connected to an adjacent-level (Level-N+1 or Level-N-1) How Box, the count shows on both ends' relevant square. The matching link must appear in the popup list when opened from either end of the relationship. This symmetry holds after add, after remove, after save, after reload, and after board-state restore. For larger numbers of digits, squares widen into rectangles. The right-side Cross-Link affordance on How Boxes remains as a small square that does not display a number and is conceptually distinct from the numbered Vertical Link squares. This–Then Boxes also support a right-border Cross-Link affordance, positioned up on the right border (away from the middle-right This–Then arrow zone) — same small square styling, no number — for Cross-Links from How Boxes to This–Then Boxes where allowed. This–Then Link counts on the left and right box edges remain as circles. S. PAGE-TYPE/TITLE BARS: Each This–Then Page has a colored top bar showing “THIS–THEN”, followed by the page name, followed by “+ Add This–Then Box”. The bar color matches the page color (or the first column color for single-page boards). “+ Add This–Then Box” adds a box under the currently selected box; if clicked repeatedly, it continues to add boxes under that selected box. Each How Page has a neutral grey top bar showing “HOW”, followed by the page name, followed by “+ Add How Box”. Both bars have a small gap after the page title before the add control. T. BOARD-SCALE VARIABLE: The engine uses a single CSS custom property --board-scale (default: 1.35, reduced from 2 so a newly opened board fits comfortably on typical laptop viewports around 1366×768 / 1440×900 without the user having to immediately zoom out) applied as a zoom factor to the main board content area. This makes the board open at a sensible default size in the browser without relying on browser zoom. The scale can be adjusted later by changing one value in the engine. Header, tab bar, control bar, and chat panel are not scaled — only the main board content area is affected. U. JUMP-TO-PAGE LINKS: Any box on a This–Then, How, or Final Outcomes page can have a Jump to a page link set in its details pane. The details pane shows a page picker and an “Add jump” button to confirm. When set, the box shows a small yellow arrow in the bottom-right corner. Clicking the yellow arrow navigates to the selected page. The jumpToPage property is stored per box and preserved in saved boards, localStorage, and DOVIEW-STATE snapshots. Older boards without jumpToPage load safely with no jump arrows. V. DOCUMENTATION-PAGE CLONE IMPROVEMENTS: Final Outcomes can be cloned onto Documentation Pages (the page title “Final Outcomes” is available as a page-title clone source, and individual Final Outcome boxes are available as box-title or box-main-text clone sources). When clicking a box-title or box-main-text clone on a Documentation Page, the board jumps to the source page and highlights the source box. When a clone shows the Display Text of a box, the clone display also shows the name of the box the Display Text belongs to. When selecting a Measure or Evaluation Question to clone, an additional option to create a new Measure or Evaluation Question is available. Runtime-surviving links themselves can be cloned onto Documentation Pages; cloned links show the source and target box names, and clicking a cloned link opens the link detail popup. This–Then link clones must not use raw `ttLinks` records whose endpoints include Final Outcome boxes or any other non-This–Then endpoint. W. RELIABLE + ADD THIS–THEN BOX BUTTON: The page-level “+ Add This–Then Box” control on the This–Then Page bar always creates a new This–Then Box. If a This–Then Box on the current page is currently selected, the new box is inserted directly below that selected box in the same column. If no This–Then Box on that page is selected, the new box is added to the bottom of the first column on that page. The new box appears immediately, behaves like any other This–Then Box, persists after save/reload, and does not corrupt link state, key ordering, or page state. No console errors are produced when the button is clicked. This is the intended behavior, reliably wired through to the engine so the button actually works in the browser and inside the artifact preview. X. JUMP-TO-PAGE ACTIONABLE ON THE BOX: For any box type that supports jump-to-page (This–Then Boxes, How Boxes, Final Outcome boxes), setting a jump target in the details pane must produce the small yellow on-box jump affordance on that box. Clicking that yellow affordance navigates directly to the selected target page. The details pane may optionally also display the selected page as a clickable action link for convenience, but the primary way to action a jump is the yellow on-box affordance. Removing the jump target from the details pane removes both the on-box yellow affordance and any details-pane action link. The jump-to-page feature is never reduced to a details-pane-only interaction. Y. PAGE-BAR TITLE INLINE RENAMING: On This–Then Pages, How Pages, and Documentation Pages, the page name shown in the top page bar can be renamed directly by double-clicking it. The interaction follows the existing inline-edit model used elsewhere: Enter saves, Escape cancels, and blur behaves consistently with the existing rename model. After a rename, both the page bar and the corresponding tab label update immediately, and the rename persists across save/reload, localStorage, Copy HTML Board, and DOVIEW-STATE snapshots. The page-bar rename edits the same underlying page label used by the tab, so the two remain in sync — there is only one source of truth for the page name. Existing tab-based renaming continues to work unchanged. Z. MEASURES AND EVALUATION QUESTIONS ON THIS–THEN LINKS: This–Then links can have Measures and Evaluation Questions associated with the link itself (user-facing wording: associated/association for Measures and Evaluation Questions on links and boxes), separate from any Measures or Evaluation Questions associated with its source or target boxes. This is managed from the This–Then link detail popup only: the popup includes an Associated Measures section and an Associated Evaluation Questions section below the Notes fields, each with a picker to select an existing item, an "Associate" button to associate it with the structural link, a Remove association control per associated item, footer links to create a new Measure or Evaluation Question from there (auto-associated with the link), and footer links to view all Measures or all Evaluation Questions. Clicking an associated Measure or Evaluation Question inside the link popup opens that item’s detail pane (closing the link popup). TT-link Measure/EQ associations are stored in `measures` and `evalQuestions` arrays on the This–Then link object itself, persist through save/reload, localStorage, Copy HTML Board, and DOVIEW-STATE snapshots, and are cleaned up automatically when a Measure or Evaluation Question is deleted. How links do NOT have this feature in the current release — their detail popups only show Display Text and Notes fields, with no Measures or Evaluation Questions sections. This scope is intentional and must not be extended to How links in the current release. AA. STRICT VERTICAL LINK / CROSS-LINK SEMANTICS AND AFFORDANCE SEPARATION: Vertical Links are strict and adjacent-level only. Top and bottom affordances on How Boxes are for Vertical Links only; the right-border affordance is for Cross-Links only; the two systems are kept visually and conceptually distinct. A Level 1 How Box links upward with a Vertical Link only to This–Then Boxes and downward with a Vertical Link only to Level 2 How Boxes. A Level-N (N≥2) How Box links upward with a Vertical Link only to Level-(N-1) How Boxes and downward with a Vertical Link only to Level-(N+1) How Boxes. Non-adjacent How-to-How links (including same-level and skipped-level) are Cross-Links, not Vertical Links. Links from Level 2-or-deeper How Boxes to This–Then Boxes are Cross-Links, not Vertical Links. Only Level 1 How Boxes may have Vertical Links to This–Then Boxes. Cross-Links include same-page How→How links, non-adjacent-level How→How links, no-level How links, and Level 2+ How→This–Then links. Because deeper How Boxes can have Cross-Links to This–Then Boxes, This–Then Boxes also have a right-border Cross-Link affordance (no number, dark when Cross-Links exist, outlined when none), behaving consistently with the Cross-Link affordance on How Boxes. Cross-Link affordances on both How and This–Then Boxes are hidden by default and revealed via the per-page-type Page View toggle. Top/bottom Vertical Link affordances remain visible according to their own Page View toggle and are never affected by the Cross-Link toggle. The on-box jump affordance is a small down triangle in the lower-right of the box with no enclosing box, matching the visual language of overview-page drill-down triangles; when a box also has a hasSubpage drill triangle, the jump triangle is offset so the two do not overlap. BB. TEMPORARY SOURCE-REFERENCE BOX AFTER EXPLICIT CROSS-PAGE NAVIGATION: When the user explicitly navigates from a selected source box (This–Then or How) to another page — for example by clicking a linked item in a count popup whose target is on another page (including the This–Then count-popup cross-page linked-item route, which must work reliably), or by clicking the on-box jump triangle — a temporary source-reference box is shown on the destination page at the top right above the page heading bar. It keeps the same color as the original selected source box, including for How source boxes (which use their page's color and, if set, the source box's custom border color); it must not be forced to a generic white/grey style just because the source is on a How Page. It uses the same font size as normal box text on that page, fits the top-right area, shows about three lines by default with internal scrolling if longer, and looks clearly like a temporary contextual reference rather than part of the page structure. It is not editable, is clickable to return to the original source box/page, and has a small close/dismiss control (✕). It is not a stored clone, not part of destination-page content, not a Documentation-page clone, and not saved as board content; it does not persist in saved boards, localStorage, Copy HTML Board, or DOVIEW-STATE snapshots, and must not export as a real object. It does not appear merely because a box happens to be selected and the user later changes pages manually through the tab bar. It only appears after explicit cross-page navigation FROM a source box (count-popup linked-item click whose target is on another page, or the on-box jump triangle). If the user navigates back to the source page, the source-reference box is automatically hidden. If another explicit cross-page navigation occurs from a different source box, the old source-reference box is replaced with the new one (there is never more than one simultaneously). If the source page is deleted, the source-reference box clears automatically. Its meaning is clearly "this is the box I came from", not "this is a box currently selected somewhere in the board". CC. CREATE AND SAVE NEW EMPTY BOARD: The control bar includes a "Create and Save New Empty Board" button. Clicking it opens a modal titled "Create and save a new empty DoView Board". The modal explains that it will create a separate new empty DoView Board as a standalone .html file and that the user should not use the browser's File > Save Page As command. The modal includes a New board name field and uses the same save/download option-card pattern as Save / Download Board. In browsers that support the file-save picker, "Save to a File You Choose" is enabled and primary, with "Download a New Empty Board" still available. In unsupported browsers, "Save to a File You Choose" is disabled/greyed out and "Download a New Empty Board" is primary. The created file contains a fresh starter board (Overview page, Final Outcomes page, This–Then Page 1 with one minimal starter box in the top-left, How Page 1 with default starter How Boxes each labelled with the standard How-page empty/new wording "How (action, person, team, unit, organization, capability, …)", blank Documentation Page 1). The entered board name becomes the new board title, and the board slug and saved/downloaded filename are derived from that name using the engine's filename-safe slug convention plus the normal date/time suffix. Empty or whitespace-only names fall back safely to "Untitled DoView Board" and a safe untitled slug. The current board in the browser is not replaced; the user opens the saved or downloaded new .html file when they want to start editing the new board, and the current board tab can stay open. DD. PAGE VIEW WORDING FOR CROSS-LINK TOGGLES: The user-facing Page View labels for the right-border Cross-Link toggles differ between page types. On This–Then Pages the label reads exactly: "Show Cross-Links to How Boxes" — because ordinary This–Then→This–Then links belong under the normal This–Then Link system above. On How Pages the label reads exactly: "Show Cross-Links to This–Then Boxes or How Boxes" — covering same-page How→How, non-adjacent-level How→How, unlevelled How, and Level 2+ How→This–Then links. The corresponding Vertical Link toggle label on This–Then Pages is exactly "Show Vertical Link counts from How Boxes (to check alignment)"; on How Pages it is exactly "Show Vertical Link counts to This–Then Boxes or How Boxes (to check alignment)". Older wording is replaced by these names and must not be reintroduced. These labels are consistent with the strict Vertical Link / Cross-Link semantics defined in AA above. EE. CLEAR ALL AND RESTORE DEFAULTS IN PAGE VIEW SETTINGS: The Page View settings panel on This–Then Pages and How Pages includes controls below the list of toggles: Clear All (turns off every item shown in that page type's View list), Select All, and Restore Defaults (restores the built-in defaults for that page type). These are view changes only, not data deletion; they do not delete content or links. Clear All turns off only items actually present in that page's View list. Restore Defaults restores the true built-in defaults for that page type, not the user's prior state. Defaults produce the following. For This–Then Pages: Show Traffic Lights = on, Show priorities = on, Show Vertical Link counts from How Boxes (to check alignment) = on, Show This–Then Link counts (just between boxes on This–Then Pages) = off, Show Cross-Links to How Boxes = off, Show Measures under Boxes = off, Show Evaluation Questions under Boxes = off, Show Display Text under Boxes = off, Show Full Display Text = off, Show Code-style View = off, Show any link Display Text/Traffic Lights on mouse over of black link arrow = off. For How Pages: Show numbering = on, Show Traffic Lights = on, Show priorities = on, Show Vertical Link counts to This–Then Boxes or How Boxes (to check alignment) = on, Show Cross-Links to This–Then Boxes or How Boxes = off, Show Measures under Boxes = off, Show Evaluation Questions under Boxes = off, Show Display Text under Boxes = off, Show Full Display Text = off, Show Code-style View = off. Full and Code-style are dependent controls in the compact Display Text row: they are disabled while Display Text is off, preserve their stored values, and do not count as independent items for Select All. On both page types, the Cross-Link option is the last item in the toggle list, and the Clear All, Select All, and Restore Defaults controls sit clearly below the list. Note: if an existing saved board contains saved view settings, those saved view settings are preserved on load and are NOT overwritten by these defaults — defaults apply to new/default state and when the user explicitly clicks Restore Defaults. FF. STANDARD HOW-PAGE EMPTY/NEW WORDING: The standard explanatory wording for new/empty How-page starter boxes and any related empty-state wording is: "How (action, person, team, unit, organization, capability, …)". This single wording covers action, person, team, unit, organization, capability, and similar "how" entities, and is used consistently wherever the empty/new How-box concept is explained. Earlier inconsistent wording such as "Add activity, project, organization or other action", "Action 1", "Action 2", and similar must not be used. Numbering is not embedded in the box text itself because the stable H001, H002, H003 (etc.) IDs already provide the numbering. This wording applies to: starter boxes on newly created How Pages, starter boxes on the How Page in a freshly created-and-saved new empty board, newly added How Boxes via the "+ Add How Box" control, and newly added How Boxes via the entry panel's "+ Add box after" control. GG. SYMMETRIC VERTICAL LINK COUNTS: When a Vertical Link is created, the count and popup entries register on BOTH the source and target sides of the relationship. Specifically: (a) a Level 1 How → This–Then Vertical Link shows a count on the Level 1 How Box's top square AND on the This–Then Box's bottom square, and the link appears in the popup opened from either end; (b) a Level-N How ↔ adjacent-level How (Level-N+1 or Level-N-1) Vertical Link shows a count on both ends' relevant square, and the link appears in the popup opened from either end. This symmetry is preserved after add, remove, save, reload, and board-state restore. One-sided count or popup behavior is not acceptable. Cross-Links are unchanged by this rule and continue to be reported through the right-border Cross-Link affordance. HH. THIS–THEN CROSS-LINK AFFORDANCE POSITION: The right-border Cross-Link affordance on This–Then Boxes (the small square for Cross-Links from How Boxes to this This–Then Box) is positioned up on the right border, clearly away from the middle-right zone used by This–Then Link arrows and from the bottom-right jump/drill triangles and the right-edge outgoing-count circle. Its semantic meaning is unchanged — it is still the Cross-Link affordance, not a This–Then Link indicator — and it must not be mistaken for an arrow. The This–Then Link arrow system is unchanged. This repositioning applies only to the This–Then Cross-Link affordance; the equivalent Cross-Link affordance on How Boxes keeps its existing position on the right middle of the right border. II. TEMPORARY SOURCE-REFERENCE BOX COLOUR AND TRIGGERING: The temporary source-reference box (see BB) must keep the same color as the original selected source box, including for How source boxes. It must not be forced to a generic white/grey style merely because the source is on a How Page. For How sources, the source-ref box uses the source page's page color (and, if the source box has a custom border color set, that custom border color is respected). The temporary source-reference box is created only by intended explicit cross-page navigation routes from a source box — notably: (1) clicking a linked-item in a This–Then count popup whose target is on another page; (2) clicking a linked-item in a Vertical Link or Cross-Link popup whose target is on another page; (3) clicking the on-box jump triangle when the target page differs from the current page. Manual tab navigation does not create a source-reference box. The box remains strictly transient — it is never saved into board state and is never restored after reload. JJ. PAGE VIEW WORDING AND DEFAULTS LOCK-IN: Use the following exact user-facing Page View wording. On This–Then, How, and Final Outcomes views, the compact Display Text row reads exactly "Show Display Text under Boxes", "Show Full Display Text", and "Show Code-style View". Full and Code-style are disabled when Display Text is off while their stored values are preserved. Clear All turns off every item in the current page's View list. If a saved board already contains saved view settings, those saved view settings are preserved on load and are not overwritten by defaults unless the user explicitly clicks Restore Defaults.
