Specific objectives: 1. Infrastructure/school environment: To make 42 primary schools child friendly and conducive for learning in the next three years. 2. Learning: To improve the average learning results of 67.658 students from the existing 53% to 76% in the coming three years. 4. This project is designed to benefit 67,658 primary school students (34,288 directly and 33,370 indirectly-with 50% female) in 42 rural primary schools located in three National Regional States of the country: Afar, Amhara, Oromia and Addis Ababa City Administration. The project will be implemented in cluster form in which 18 primary schools are directly addressed. These 18 cluster schools will share lessons with the rest 24 Satellite schools in which 2-3 primary schools are clustered under a target school. To achieve this long term goal, the project focusses on the whole chain from attitude change, access to quality vocational training to industrial exposure and accessing the job market, while generating regular feed back on the training method and organizing refresher courses by Kenyan's Premier Hospitality and Tourism Training School. Some schools need to be replaced due to the lukewarm attitude of facilitators while the number of club members in very large schools will be increased. There will be three sets of trainings. The first will be a refresher for existing CSE facilitators and peer educators, the second will target new teachers and the third will be for both the existing and new facilitators which will be a review meeting to discuss challenges and strengths. We will work together with GES to select suitable teachers who are willing and ready to be trained as facilitators to ensure commitment. Head teachers will be key in ensuring the success of the project in their schools. They will be part of the stakeholder consultation processes and will be tasked to assist facilitators to come out with weekly time schedules for lessons. This will address the challenges associated with the allocation of periods for the club meetings. This will yield best results from investments made. So far, SASH project through its interventions has enabled the 31 primary schools to achieve: 1. Increased pupils enrolments 2. Improved academic performance 3. Reduced cases of school drop outs & cases of early pregnancies From SASH to STAR School project is an initiative being implemented by Pamoja Child Foundation in Awasi & Nyang’oma location of Kisumu County. The project target 31 public primary schools with an approximate population of 10,500 pupils, 310 teachers, 310 BOMs and 3,500 parents and guardians. One of the main gaps identified during is the involvement of the private sector in offering skills in Uganda, which is paramount but necessitates a paradigm mind shift in Business Technical and Vocational Education Training (BTVET) programming. Actors still believe that skilling is only formal and only through the BTVETs which are mandated to deliver them. Nevertheless, key lessons learnt demonstrate that it is possible to establish a mechanism for private sector participation in skills provision at farmer level and BTVET setting. Private Public Partnerships (PPPs) are essential to promote relevance of BTVET trainings through apprenticeship/on-the-job-training programs. SKY strategically looks at such partnerships in order to improve access, quality and relevance of skilling youths, women and farmers to be better agripreneurs and create employment by equipping men and women with market driven skills in agriculture, agribusinesses and support services. The project is proposed to cover five (5) regions namely: Lango, Lake Kyoga Area, Elgon Area, Lake Victoria Crescent and Western Uganda. The targets are: BTVET institutions, Agriculture Colleges, the Private Sector, Youths, Farmers and Women. Edukans role will focus on capacity building of BTVET institutions, and linking these institutions with the private sector. Edukans will do so using proven methods and approaches. Students will be mainly Dogon and Peul who inhabit the Dogon region. When the Lycée Professionel starts in October 2016, there is a capacity of 150 students. When the school is completed in 2018 it may accommodate 400 to 600 students. They all may profit of the adapted curriculum, traineeships and the course in entrepreneurship. As in the program ‘les mots Imprimés’ the teachers will become more motivated and enthusiastic by training and that will create a good atmosphere in the school. A good school can compete with the regular education in the city (Mopti, Bamako). The inhabitants of the Dogon region may profit from an secondary education in Sangha. Families will not be split up and more experts on issues relevant for the region are available. Our innovative initiative is two-folded and will result in 2 major outcomes: - Outcome 1: Post-secondary TVET providers are able to identify the SRHR needs of their target group, and respond to this within their own organisations. - Outcome 2: Post-secondary TVET providers offer CSE for their students, with a curriculum that fits the specific needs of their target group and is adapted to the local context. To achieve these outcome results, we have carefully planned activities that will lead to the following results at output level: - Output 1.1. 14 staff members of 7 post-secondary TVET providers are trained in research methodologies to develop a comprehensive SRHR policy for their organisations. - Output 2.1. 14 staff members of 7 post-secondary TVET providers are trained in the design and development of a comprehensive sexuality education curriculum for young people in post-secondary TVET programmes. Output 2.2. Based on the results and lessons learnt of a small-scale pilot in 7 post-secondary TVET institutions, the working group adapted the CSE curriculum for final approval by the advisory board. The project targets three primary schools, one in the Aysaita Refugee Camp and two in the Aysaita woreda, which is referred as the Host Community. This means an education that children understand, which is relevant to their learning needs. It was noted in the assessment that the quality of education the formal schools is on average “moderate”, while the overall teaching-learning process in the IDP camps is classified as “weak”. It was recommended to provide continuous training to teachers in child-centred pedagogy and participatory teaching and learning methodologies to increase the academic learning outcomes of students, as well as their social-emotional skills. The purpose of the training ToT conducted by Edukans is to improve the uptake and impact of pedagogy among government formal teachers, IDP teachers in LWF’s Education programming. Staff from national and international NGOs, and supervisors (government officials) are trained to guide and support teachers on how to apply the Active Learning method in their daily classroom practice in order to enhance learning and critical thinking for lifelong learning. Particularly for rural youth there is a huge gap between their education and skills levels and market requirements. Edukans and Heifer decided to join forces to close this gap from both ends: by improving access to quality trainings for employable skills, while at the same time creating (self-)employment opportunities in profitable agricultural value chains. This way we will enable 3,200 uneducated young people to earn a decent income to support themselves and their families. To achieve this, we will effectively train them in methods to increase the production of maize, sunflower and groundnuts and to process, store, transport and sell their produce. With these skills they can participate in 2 newly established agri-business hubs that will link them to profitable markets, value chains and support structures. The (self) employment opportunities of at least 70% of Manq’a alumni will be increased through technical and social competencies which align with the demands of the gastronomy market. In total, 2.100 (40 % of total) alumni will have dignified jobs and 900 (30 % of total) will be supported to start an enterprise in the gastronomy or food industry which survives 18 months (this part of the project is funded through BID). Manq’a will start to organize comeback training sessions, e.g. in form of master classes or additional soft skills training. At least 8 out of 10 Manq’a schools are aligned with the (labour) market demands through the application of the Edukans’ 7-STEPS model. Sustainability, both internal and external is key. The business model of Manq’a generates at least 50% of own income, generated through 3 different business models implemented within the project. Edukans is a development organization focusing on education and started its educational programme in Ghana with the aim of improving the quality and access to education. Next to the Foundation, the company Tony’s Chocolonely has the goal to produce 100% slave-free chocolate bars with cocoa from Ghana and Ivory Coast. Besides improving the lives of the farmers they are supporting directly through their contract with the ABOCFA cooperative. The Chocolonely Foundation is also seeking for ways to improve the socio-economic circumstances in the communities of the farmers. These communities expressed the importance of, amongst others, improved educational services for their children. This draft proposal is the outcome of various discussions between Tony’s Chocolonely, Edukans and a local expert organizations IBIS and AGREDS. Results 1. Improved school environment in (at least) 4 schools in Suhum district. a. Renovation of existing school buildings b. Procurement of school desks, and cardboards for teaching and learning material. 2. Improved access to learning materials (especially on cocoa/ professional farming) for pupils in (at least) 4 schools in Suhum district. a.
