Its full name\ \ is Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking Truth\ \ in the Sciences (French title: Discours de la méthode pour bien conduire sa raison,\ \ et chercher la vérité dans les sciences). The Discourse on The Method is best\ \ known as the source of the famous quotation \"Je pense, donc je suis\" (\"I think,\ \ therefore I am\"), which occurs in Part IV of the work. (The similar statement\ \ in Latin, Cogito ergo sum, is found in Part I, §7 of Principles of Philosophy.)\n\ The Discourse on the Method is one of the most influential works in the history\ \ of modern philosophy, and important to the development of natural sciences. In\ \ this work, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism, which had previously been\ \ studied by Sextus Empiricus, Al-Ghazali and Michel de Montaigne. Descartes modified\ \ it to account for a truth he found to be incontrovertible. Descartes started his\ \ line of reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh\ \ perspective, clear of any preconceived notions.\nThe book was originally published\ \ in Leiden in the Netherlands. Later, it was translated into Latin and published\ \ in 1656 in Amsterdam. The book was intended as an introduction to three works\ \ Dioptrique, Météores and Géométrie. La Géométrie contains Descartes' first introduction\ \ of the Cartesian coordinate system. That the text was written and published in\ \ French rather than Latin, which was the language in which philosophical and scientific\ \ texts were most frequently written and published (as were most of Descartes' other\ \ works), is worth noting.\nTogether with Meditations on First Philosophy (Meditationes\ \ de Prima Philosophia), Principles of Philosophy (Principia philosophiae) and Rules\ \ for the Direction of the Mind (Regulae ad directionem ingenii), it forms the base\ \ of the epistemology known as Cartesianism.\n From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA)." edition_identifiers: edition_id: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/59#Discourse-on-the-Method-of-Rightly-Conducting-One-s-Reason-and-of-Seeking-Truth-in-the-Sciences gutenberg_bookshelf: - Philosophy - Harvard Classics gutenberg_issued: '1993-03-01' gutenberg_type: Text identifiers: gutenberg: '59' wikidata: Q731224 language: en publisher: Project Gutenberg rights: Public domain in the USA. rights_url: http://creativecommons.org/about/pdm subjects: - !lcc 'B' - !lcsh 'Science -- Methodology' - !lcsh 'Methodology' - GITenberg title: Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences url: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/59 wikipedia: - https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metodin_esitys - https://fa.wikipedia.org/wiki/%DA%AF%D9%81%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%B1_%D8%AF%D8%B1_%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%B4 - https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Discourse_on_the_Method - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Discours_de_la_m%C3%A9thode - https://gl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discurso_do_m%C3%A9todo - https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%96%B9%E6%B3%95%E5%BA%8F%E8%AA%AC - https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discurso_sobre_o_M%C3%A9todo - https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discurso_del_m%C3%A9todo - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discourse_on_the_Method - https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A0%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%81%D1%83%D0%B6%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B5_%D0%BE_%D0%BC%D0%B5%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%B5 - https://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/%EB%B0%A9%EB%B2%95%EC%84%9C%EC%84%A4 - https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discours_de_la_m%C3%A9thode - https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%AB%87%E8%AB%87%E6%96%B9%E6%B3%95 - https://wa.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discours_de_la_m%C3%A9thode_(live) - https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rozprawa_o_metodzie - https://es.wikisource.org/wiki/Discurso_del_m%C3%A9todo - https://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/Or%C3%B0r%C3%A6%C3%B0a_um_a%C3%B0fer%C3%B0 - https://pcd.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discours_de_la_m%C3%A9thode - https://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D9%85%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%84_%D8%B9%D9%86_%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D9%86%D9%87%D8%AC - https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verhandeling_over_de_methode - https://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discourse_on_the_Method - https://sl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razprava_o_metodi - https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rozprava_o_metod%C4%9B - https://oc.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discors_del_Met%C3%B2de - https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discours_de_la_m%C3%A9thode - https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Discourse_on_the_Method - https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discorso_sul_metodo - https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discurs_del_m%C3%A8tode - https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%9E%D7%90%D7%9E%D7%A8_%D7%A2%D7%9C_%D7%94%D7%9E%D7%AA%D7%95%D7%93%D7%94
