Your job is to produce **idempotent, lint-clean, production-grade** Ansible and to review/fix existing Ansible against the same bar. Default to small, surgical changes that match the project's existing house style. This skill covers four workflows — **write/scaffold**, **review & lint**, **convert (bash → playbook)**, and **debug**. Pick the one that fits the request; they share the same conventions and checklists below. Deep references (read on demand, don't inline): - Writing idioms & examples → `references/writing-conventions.md` - Lint/CI configs (`.yamllint`, `.ansible-lint`, pre-commit, CI) → `references/linting-and-ci.md` - Best-practices checklist → `references/best-practices.md` - A runnable, lint-clean reference project → `examples/nginx-role/` --- ## Step 0 — Detect & respect project context Before writing anything, look at what already exists and **match it**: - Is there an `ansible.cfg`, `roles/`, `inventory/`, `requirements.yml`? What collections and `ansible-core` line are pinned? - Are there existing `.ansible-lint` / `.yamllint` / `.pre-commit-config.yaml`? Adopt the project's rules rather than imposing new ones. - What naming, indentation, and tagging conventions are already in use? **Never overwrite a file silently.** For any edit to an existing file, show a diff and confirm intent first. For destructive actions (deleting tasks, changing `state: absent`, touching production inventory) call it out explicitly. --- ## Mandatory writing rules Apply these to everything you author or fix: 1. **FQCN always** — `ansible.builtin.copy`, `ansible.posix.authorized_key`, `community.docker.docker_compose_v2`. Never bare `copy`/`service`. 2. **Name every task and play** — describe the *why*, start with a capital letter (`- name: Install authorized SSH keys`). 3. **Idempotency first** — prefer modules over `command`/`shell`. When you must shell out, add `changed_when:` / `creates:` / `removes:` so reruns are clean. Read-only commands get `changed_when: false`. 4. **`_` variable naming** — every role variable is prefixed with the role name (`nginx_listen_port`, `hardening_ssh_port`). Defaults live in `defaults/main.yml`. 5. **Variable hierarchy** — `defaults/` → inventory `group_vars/` → `host_vars/`. Don't hard-code values that belong in a var. 6. **Templates** — `.j2` files start with `# {{ ansible_managed }}`, and `template:` tasks use `validate:` whenever the target has a checker (`sshd -t -f %s`, `nginx -t -c %s`, `visudo -cf %s`). 7. **Secrets** — encrypt with Ansible Vault; add `no_log: true` to any task that handles a secret so it never prints. Never commit plaintext secrets. 8. **Handlers** — register service restarts/reloads via `notify:` + `handlers/main.yml` (named, FQCN). Use `meta: flush_handlers` only when a later task depends on the restart. 9. **Multi-OS guards** — gate distro-specific tasks with `when: ansible_os_family == "Debian"` (etc.) rather than assuming one platform. 10. **Tags** — give tasks/imports hierarchical tags (`verify`, ``, `_`) so operators can run slices; mark prerequisite `assert`s with `tags: [always]`. 11. **Set `mode:` explicitly** on `copy`/`template`/`file` to avoid risky-permission warnings. --- ## Workflow A — Scaffold / write - **Role**: standard layout — `defaults/`, `vars/` (only for constants), `tasks/`, `handlers/`, `templates/`, `files/`, `meta/main.yml` (with `galaxy_info`: author, description, license, `min_ansible_version`, `platforms`). Mirror `examples/nginx-role/`. - **Umbrella role with module toggles** (for larger roles): `tasks/main.yml` does `import_tasks` gated on `__enabled` flags, one file per module — lets operators run `--tags _` and opt out per host. - **Playbook**: named play, `become:` at the play level where appropriate, roles list, and `pre_tasks`/`post_tasks` for validation and health checks. - **Inventory**: `hosts.ini` (or YAML) with `group_vars//` and `host_vars/.yml`; keep environments separate; keep inventory in version control. After writing, **run the lint workflow** below before declaring done. ## Workflow B — Review & lint 1. Run, in order: `ansible-playbook --syntax-check `, then `yamllint .`, then `ansible-lint`. Use the project's configs if present, else offer the ones in `references/linting-and-ci.md`. 2. Produce a **severity-ranked report**: - **🔴 Error** — breaks runs or idempotency, FQCN violations, missing `changed_when`, plaintext secrets, no `mode:` on written files. - **🟡 Warning** — missing tags, no `validate:` where a checker exists, no multi-OS guard, unnamed tasks. - **⚪ Nit** — naming/style, comment-the-why gaps. 3. Offer to apply fixes — **show the diff first**, then edit. 4. For genuinely module-less commands, use `command:` with `creates:`/`changed_when:`. Validate the result with `--check --diff`. ## Workflow D — Debug a failing play - Re-run with `-vvv` (or `-vvvv` for connection issues) to see the real error. - **Connection/auth**: check `ansible_host`/`ansible_port`/`ansible_user`, SSH key, and `become`/`become_method`; test with `ansible -m ansible.builtin.ping`. - **Module arg errors**: read the `msg:`; confirm the collection is installed (`ansible-galaxy collection list`) and pinned in `requirements.yml`. - **Idempotency drift** (task always reports `changed`): add `changed_when:`/`creates:`, or switch a `command` to a proper module. - **Templating**: render in isolation, check undefined vars and `| default(...)` usage. --- ## Output discipline - Show the files/diffs you changed. - Actually run the linters you have available and report the real result — if `ansible-lint` isn't installed, say so and show the command rather than claiming it passed. - Keep changes scoped to the request; flag anything destructive before doing it.
