Community Poultry Project
In Oddar Meanchey province poultry production is one of the many activities in diversified rural farming systems and more than half of all Cambodian households keep poultry. Revenues from poultry only represent very small proportion of total household revenues, but women accrue most of this income, which allows them to cover household and education expenses. Housing for birds, although very basic in some cases, can also be nonexistent. Birds sleep in trees and natural sheds at night. The cost of inputs can be a small cash expense for the purchase of day-old chicks (in case own-stock hatching is not pursued) and some complementary feedstuffs. Birds are sold live locally or at farm gates, were motorized traders and middlemen purvey supplies to take to markets. Poultry are thus also an important source of cash income for low-income households. The project aims for the production and improvement of potentially locally bred chickens through community entrepreneurship development and value chain development. It is composed of four components: 1. capacity strengthening of the contract growing system to deliver inputs and veterinary services for poultry, 2. organization of the beneficiaries into enterprises by 3. overall training of stakeholders, 4. equipment and infrastructure development.

Orkonerai Mass Media Ltd.
"Orkonerei Mass Media Ltd - ORMAME- is a company that has been in operations since 2009 following its formation to address sustainability in provision of media services among pastoralists communities in Northern Tanzania. Its core activities are community radio broadcasting, and video production/documentation. The objective was - and still remains - to advocate pastoralists interest against marginalization in development processes. It is the duty of the radio to promote social cohesion and raise awareness and stir up involvement and participation of the Pastoralists Community in policy, legal, economic and environmental conservation processes. ORMAME remains the only Pastoralists Community media company in Northern Tanzania. It has been quite successful in raising awareness in the community and especially in stimulating an urge for people to seek for information. The use of Maa Language is providing an opportunity for most People, who do not understand the conventional languages used in most media outlets -radio, TV and prints- to be informed. As a result, over the years, ORMAME - especially its radio broadcasting service has encouraged high enrollment to both primary and secondary schools for many pastoralists children. It has also helped in coordinating and organizing local economic development initiatives and facilitated community participation, inclusion and engagement in a wide range of community development issues."

Multi-Purpose Banks
The project aims to develop two successful rice bank initiatives in Oddar Meanchey into multi-purpose banks, offering a range of affordable credit and agricultural products to an increased number of members. In Oddar Meanchey, rice farming is the main source of livelihood for most families. However, its profitability is heavily compromised by traditional agricultural practices, the absence of affordable credit products and poor marketing of produce. This affects both food security and household income in the province. By making available affordable quality farm inputs, credit facilities (cash and in kind) and improved market opportunities, these enterprises help smallholder farmers to improve their productivity and profitability, contributing to their income and food security. Besides diversifying their activities, the multi-purpose banks will provide 2000 households and farmers with access to these products and services by expanding their operations to thirty villages. By generating sufficient income, the enterprises remain financially sustainable and will be able to use their profits for other community investments. In order for the banks to realize these goals, ICS will support the process of expansion and strengthen the managerial and administrative capacities of the enterprises and their management committees. Social Sanitation Marketing
Due to the lack of developed sanitation facilities most Cambodian villagers use the open defecation method. This results in untreated human waste near homes. The lack of sanitation facilities in rural areas contributes to Cambodia's under-five mortality rate being among the highest in Asia. This project aims to improve rural sanitation by marketing unsubsidized toilets. Sor Sor Trung promotes this idea through a social enterprise approach. The organization works to establish local sanitation agents within communities. This innovation will spread the demand for such positions and will raise income for families as well. The project will train local entrepreneurs - small businessmen - how to build good and affordable latrines called The Easy Latrine. In addition to building the latrine structure itself this training will involve many different construction efforts including the production of toilet rings and cement slabs. Working hand in hand with the community sanitation agents will take models of the latrines into villages. In addition to marketing promoting and selling the finished product at village meetings and door to door the sanitation agents will also offer education concerning proper sanitation and hygiene. The Easy Latrine will be offered to households at an affordable price. Families can purchase the Easy Latrine in cash or on an installment basis with little interest involved.

Community Pig Farm Enterprise
Many Cambodian women- in the attempt to raise additional income for the family- obtain micro-credit loans for raising pigs. In rural communities this venture is a very common way for families to raise household income. However not all pig-raising efforts are successful. The Community Pig Farm Enterprise aims to develop a community pig-raising model centered on raising household income and skills. The model will offer a range of services such as high quality piglets training on commercial pig-raising and marketing veterinary support piglet dispersal and a contract growing plan in Oddar Meanchey province. The project intends to invest in the pig-raising economy and support the pork value chain. The project will be primarily focused in Oddar Meanchey but will also include neighboring provinces for market. This will be implemented through the active participation of selected local pig raisers in Oddar Meanchey and the contract growing model will enable them to create links in the local market. The project aim is to target 110 contract growers. These are small farmers - specifically women - and forty pork retailers and three slaughter houses in Oddar Meanchey and the neighboring provinces.

Vijana Reloaded
"Western Kenya has a high youth unemployment rate, amongst other due to the fact that young people do not have the right skills important to local enterprises. The present educational offerings are not aligned with what local companies need. So young people lack the specific skills that are so important for local businesses. Together with local companies and the Kenyan government ICS developed the Vijana Reloaded community school. The school teaches young people skills in ICT, entrepreneurship and agricultural technique. It is precisely this combination of skills that local businesses need. Social skills are also part of the curriculum. Vijana Reloaded can be accessed on location, in a mobile bus or online. Meatu Young Entrepreneurs
"Young people in Meatu, Tanzania, have few opportunities. Without entrepreneurial skills, few succeed in building a durable business or expanding an existing one. There is great demand among young entrepreneurs for coaching and training opportunities. There are hardly any educational avenues, let alone routes for young entrepreneurs. Translating a business idea into an enterprise is therefore very difficult. The Young Entrepreneurship Program - YEP - offers young entrepreneurs in Meatu a coaching and training program. Here they learn about finances, market research, sales and marketing. On the basis of a good business plan they receive a starter loan. They then have 3 years to pay back their loan. During the program the young entrepreneurs take on a practical assignment and are apprenticed to a local business. The basic training program also makes it possible for young people without a business idea to set up their own business."

Meatu Solar Energy Enterprise
"The Meatu Solar Enterprises project aims at enabling rural communities in Meatu district to access and use electricity through solar energy. Meatu district has a great potential for using solar energy with an average of eight hours of sun daily, but currently this potential is barely being used because of insufficient local awareness and capacities. Providing areas that are far from the national electricity grid with access to solar energy brings communities a wide range of advantages to improve economic activities and household wellbeing, for example by enabling (non-kerosine) lighting and mobile phones usage. This project will pursue three strategies to improve access to solar energy: 1. Investing in the establishment of solar enterprises will allow for the delivery of solar equipment to households and small local businesses through local markets. 2. By strengthening the infrastructure for installation and maintenance, the communitys capacity to operate the solar systems will be enhanced. 3) Setting up village savings and loans schemes will provide communities with the financial services that allow them to make the necessary investments in solar equipment. The project builds upon a pilot project that is successfully being implemented in Meatu district since 2009. It scales up the activities and provide more households and local businesses with access to solar energy. The sustainability of results will be enhanced trough a refined social business approach. ICS will support the establishment and capacity enhancement of local solar enterprises, run by women and youth groups, that supply the community with solar panels and accessories on credit. By creating a local market for solar equipment and services, the project strengthens the capacity of communities to achieve positive social change in an entrepreneurial way. By facilitating the establishment of financial services, the project will enable community members to make their own investments and sustain the results of the project after ICS involvement. "

Community Water Enterprise
"Following a social business approach, this project will establish a safe drinking water supply system and improve peoples access to clean water for drinking purposes in Beng and Kok Mon Communes, Cambodia. Water will be pumped from existing community ponds, deep wells and rain water cisterns, and through water purification and sterilization, it will be made into quality safe drinking water. In addition, this project will motivate people to use clean water, and spread awareness on water-borne diseases and other health issues that affect their children and families. The water filtration system will produce a finished product of safe drinking water stored in twenty litre bottles and lately for small bottles. The bottled water will be produced safely and sustainably through a reliable, profitable procedure and be offered for purchase at an affordable price in the villages. Through an innovative approach, the project will install necessary equipment using a combination of local resources, active filtration and UV - Ultra Violet - and Ozone sterilization. The project is expecting to have 1,600 families accessing the mineral water products which will be available through the village water sales agent of the mineral water enterprise."

Support to Community Council
"ICS has been working very closely with the Commune Council for several years, and they have been engaged in various ICS project interventions in Beng Commune and attended a series of meetings and training workshops initiated by ICS. The Commune Council also visited various types of project interventions in other provinces in order to expand their understanding and increase their skills in community development. An important key role of the Commune Council is making sure services are provided to its constituents. This is accomplished through an annual process of Commune Council investment planning which helps them to prioritize where funds should be allocated. A major challenge exists in influencing the Commune Council to change their habits of focusing their funds mostly in infrastructure investment rather than allocating portions to support the socio-economic initiatives of their constituents. ICS has experience in engaging with the Commune Council and co invest with NGOs by not isolating the Commune Council, but rather actively engaging them in the process and work along with them. ICS act as a bridge between the community, civil society and the Commune Council, and will strategically invest in the Commune Council (supply) and create strong demands from the civil society organization (CSOs.)

Skillful Parenting
The family forms the basic protective unit for children. Children need to feel safe and protected within the family set up. It is within the family that children are taught morals and responsibilities that will enable them go through life. Parents play a key role in the physical social and mental development of their children and are the first point of influence for the children. The ICS skilful parenting programme provides a holistic approach that reinforces positive parenting practices in Kenya and Tanzania empowering parents to address challenges that they face in bringing up their children. The skilful parenting programme focuses on improving both parenting and child outcomes. Specifically the programme focuses on empowering parents with the knowledge skills attitudes and behaviours that will enhance their capacity and confidence so that they can effectively meet their childrens developmental and growth needs. To reinforce our initiatives at family level families are on a continuous basis empowered with information guides tool kits and or fact sheets on various topical issues that emerge during parenting discussions. This specific projects covers the development of a family budgeting toolkit. This is seen as important guide that will empower families to proactively plan effectively for their finances - resources - to that they are able to optimally address their needs based on their available resources and to avoid financial stress.

Safe drinking water for school children and their communities
"The main goal of this project is to improve access to safe drinking water in Meatu district for school children and the communities they belong to. The project deliberately addresses school children directly as well as the communities they belong to. If targeting school children in isolation, the projects impact would still be compromised by the lack of access to safe drinking water in the childrens household environment."
With the current approach the project attempts to maximize its impact for rural communities in Meatu in general and their children in specific. 1000 households in remote areas that cannot be served through community water systems will have access to purification products that ensure safe drinking water.

Empowering families through skilful parenting in Northern Tanzania
"A safe and stable home environment is of great importance in allowing children to develop into positive adults. Unfortunately this is not always the case for many rural children in Kenya. By making parents aware of the impact of positive child-rearing, the atmosphere at home is improved and children are able to feel safer at home. ICS has developed Skillful Parenting courses in which parents can learn about parenting skills. Subjects like self-worth and affirmation, conflict control within the family, positive discipline and child protection are covered. The usefulness of saving money, planning things together within the family, money management and setting financial priorities are examples of issues adressed in the trainings. The parents learn together and support each other in developing know-how and skills concerning parenting. Learning is also accomplished through theater, afternoon discussions and radio and television reports."

Diversified Crop Production
"Most farmers can make good profits by growing and selling vegetables and other diversified crops. Vegetable and other diversified crops that make cash such as cassava, peanut, maize, bean and rice are the potential crops to be promoted. However, many farmers cant take advantage of this opportunity because they lack good quality inputs, irrigation, credit, know-how, and market information. To address these issues, Community-based Integrated Development - CIDO - implements this project in Otdar Meanchey province, which bundles appropriate techniques, good quality agricultural inputs and marketing for sustainable vegetable and diversified crop production."

Community[e]Ducation
The goal of this project is to improve the knowledge of adolescents -12-15 years old - about the human body sexuality and reproductive health. Special attention will be given to negotiation and communication skills and HIV/AIDS. This will give them an able-bodied start in life. The project starts with assessing the need and develop together with local stakeholders a comprehensive school program to use as a blended (onsite and e-learning) tool for sexuality and reproductive health education. It introduces the use of e-learning activities by trained healthcare workers to teachers and peer educators in sexuality and reproductive health education thereby improving training skills of healthcare workers and teachers who give health/sexuality education in schools. Other objectives are to support NGOs and the local government to use e-learning as a tool for sexuality and reproductive health education and strengthen the need to integrate life skill education into the school curriculum.

Society of Khmer Youth entrepreneurs
Unemployment is high among Cambodias youth - due in part to a low level of education - although younger youth are more likely to be literate - 84% - than older youth - 76.3%. By gender more young women have reached primary levels of schooling. But young men are more likely to have had a secondary education. One factor contributing to this gender disparity is the lack of secondary schools in rural areas and the reluctance of many families to send their daughters to urban centres for education . One of the challenges in engaging the youth to become active participants in creating change in their society is in maximizing the participation of out-of-school youths (OSY) in rural communities. OSYs tend to migrate to urban areas in search for employment. In addition to this their degree of participation is limited by their knowledge and skills brought about by lack of basic education and life skills. The problems faced by children and youth are all interrelated. Rural poverty diminishes their likelihood of obtaining and completing basic education. The rural poor who migrate to the cities for work tend to be homeless and unemployed. Thus they are more likely to turn to criminal behaviours or take risky and exploitative employment. Through SKYE Cambodian youth are given relevant vocational and life skills training opportunities that will equip them to explore create and participate in social enterprise opportunities within their communit. Thus breaking the cycle of poverty which they find themselves in. By establishing the Society of Khmer Youth Entrepreneurs (SKYE) youth are given a stronger voice in the society and they will not just be a statistics representing the population. By SKYE opportunities for youth are opened in their own communities reducing the possibility of risky migration.

Beekeeping Social Enterprise
"Although beekeeping has been practiced in Busia and Kakamega counties since long, the commercial potential of honey production is rarely being used. Most farmers that are engaged in beekeeping use traditional technologies, compromising both the quantity and quality of the honey that is produced. Additionally, beekeeping farmers only find access to local markets with small quantities, providing them with very limited returns. Making use of the commercial potential of beekeeping can provide farmers with an additional income through an activity that is not very labour-intensive. This way their primary activities on food production are not compromised. The additional income prevents them from being forced to sell other (cereal) produce that is needed for household consumption. This project aims at improving the productivity and competitiveness of beekeeping farmers by investing in three areas: 1) training and linking them to extension services to improve their skills and knowledge on appropriate beekeeping technology, 2) improving the availability and access to quality beekeeping inputs, and 3) improving the market position of beekeepers to increase their returns from honey sales. Skillful Parenting Cambodia
A safe and stable home environment is of great importance in allowing children to develop into positive adults. Unfortunately this is not always the case for many rural children in Cambodia. The absence of information means that parents in rural areas of Cambodia are often not aware of the impact of education on their children. Parents pass on to children what they themselves learned and in doing so do not always follow the best examples. In addition there are often underlying family problems present. ICS has developed Skillful Parenting courses in which parents can learn about parenting skills working in groups. Subjects like self-worth and affirmation conflict control within the family positive discipline and child protection are covered. Parents are also made aware about the usefulness of saving money family budgeting and setting financial priorities jointly within the family. The parents learn together and support each other in developing know-how and skills concerning parenting. Violence against women and children is a big problem in Cambodia and this aspect receives special attention in the Cambodian Skillful Parenting program. On top of the subjects noted above coaches and teachers spend time talking about respectful gender-equal and non-violent relationships between fathers and mothers and between parent and child.
