不寐仿宋 / Insomnia FangSong — License and Attributions ======================================================== Copyright (c) 2026 Alexander Tseng. Insomnia FangSong is a free/libre font derived from HZ Socho (https://github.com/MihailJP/minchovariant) and from the CJK glyph data of GlyphWiki (https://glyphwiki.org). It inherits the license terms of its upstream sources. SUMMARY ------- You may use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, and sell copies of this font, commercially or non-commercially, subject to two conditions: (1) NOTICES. All copyright notices and permission notices in this file must be preserved in all copies of the font and in supporting documentation. (2) RESERVED NAME. Derivative fonts must not use "Insomnia" or "不寐" in their names. See section 7 below; this condition applies only to the present author's own contribution and does not restrict your rights to any upstream material. THE FONT IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. What was changed in Insomnia FangSong ------------------------------------- * Added Simplified-Chinese hanzi missing from HZ Socho, and converted the existing GB2312 hanzi from Japanese (JIS) glyph forms to mainland-China (GB / 新字形) forms. All Chinese hanzi are rendered from GlyphWiki's mainland (-g) regional data via the KAGE engine, then traced to outlines. * Renamed to 不寐仿宋 / Insomnia FangSong; converted to TrueType (glyf) for broad application compatibility; fixed vertical metrics; reorganised the naming into a Book / Demi / Bold family. * Non-Chinese glyphs (Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, kana, symbols, punctuation) are carried over unchanged from HZ Socho. ======================================================================== 1. Overall terms — X11 License (with font-embedding exception) ======================================================================== Insomnia FangSong may be used in any way, including but not limited to copying, modifying, distributing, or selling copies, as long as you follow the terms of the X11 License with font embedding exception shown below (inherited from Computer Modern Unicode and HZ Socho). This permission is granted regardless of commerciality. Andrey V. Panov (C) 2005. All rights reserved. This exception does not however invalidate any other reasons why the document might be covered by the X11 License. If you modify these fonts, you may extend this exception to your version of the fonts, but you are not obligated to do so. If you do not wish to do so, delete this exception statement from your version. ======================================================================== 2. GlyphWiki data (Chinese hanzi skeletons) ======================================================================== See https://en.glyphwiki.org/wiki/GlyphWiki:License The glyphs registered at GlyphWiki, as well as the articles, can be freely used by anyone. Reuse of this data, such as reproduction or modification of the glyphs, is permitted. There are no specific restrictions with regards to displaying the author's name. Reuse of GlyphWiki data as the basis for a new font, or direct usage of fonts and glyphs copied from GlyphWiki in published work is allowed. All glyphs at GlyphWiki are free to any use and come with no warranty. (Copyright 2009 GlyphWiki Project.) Note: GlyphWiki does not hold copyright on material quoted within its articles; where such material is reused, its own license applies. The hanzi used in this font are taken from GlyphWiki's own glyph database. ======================================================================== 3. Computer Modern Unicode (Latin / Greek / Cyrillic) ======================================================================== Covered by the X11 License in section 1 above. Andrey V. Panov (C) 2005. Version note: Computer Modern Unicode versions 0.6.3a and earlier are distributed under the X11 License with the font-embedding exception quoted in section 1. From version 0.7.0 onward the project changed its license to the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The glyphs inherited by this font come, via HZ Socho, from the X11-licensed line (0.7.0 and later are not part of this lineage). M+ fonts (some symbols) ======================================================================== Copyright (C) Coji Morishita / M+ FONTS PROJECT. These fonts are free software. Unlimited permission is granted to use, copy, and distribute them, with or without modification, either commercially or noncommercially. THESE FONTS ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY. Note: these terms are those of the original M+ OUTLINE FONTS, which is the version inherited here. The later M PLUS fonts (2021 onward) are released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 and are not part of this lineage. GL-Antique (some symbols) ======================================================================== Copyright (C) 2003-2009 Das Ende der Wildnis (http://heiden.daynight.jp/), Copyright (C) 2008-2023 Gutenberg Labo (https://github.com/Gutenberg-Labo), Copyright (C) 2002-2017 M+ FONTS PROJECT (http://mplus-fonts.osdn.jp/), All rights reserved. These fonts are free softwares. Unlimited permission is granted to use, copy, and distribute it, with or without modification, either commercially and noncommercially. THESE FONTS ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY. Upstream repository: https://github.com/Gutenberg-Labo/GL-Antique Original site: http://gutenberg.osdn.jp/ja/license.html ======================================================================== 6. Build tools — KAGE engine (GPL-3.0) and Potrace (GPL-2.0-or-later) ======================================================================== The Chinese hanzi were produced by rendering GlyphWiki's freely-licensed skeleton data (section 2) into outlines with the KAGE engine (https://github.com/MihailJP/kage-engine, GNU GPL v3) and then tracing the result with Potrace (https://potrace.sourceforge.net/, GNU GPL v2 or later). These are BUILD TOOLS. None of their program code is contained in or distributed with the font files; the font stores only the resulting glyph outlines, which are derived from the free GlyphWiki data, not from the tools' source code. This position rests on two grounds: (a) The GNU GPL version 3, section 0, states that "the output from running a covered work is covered by this License only if the output, given its content, constitutes a covered work." The Free Software Foundation's GPL FAQ likewise explains that the output of a program is generally not covered by the license of that program, unless the program copies part of itself into the output. The glyph outlines in this font are derived from GlyphWiki's freely-licensed skeleton data, not from the source code of KAGE or Potrace. (b) The same position is taken upstream. HZ Socho is generated in exactly the same way — KAGE engine and Potrace applied to GlyphWiki data — yet is released under the X11 terms in section 1 by the author of that very KAGE-engine fork. On this basis this font is distributed under the permissive terms above (sections 1-5) rather than the GPL. Note: this is a good-faith reading of the upstream terms, not legal advice. If you redistribute the *build scripts* together with a copy of the KAGE engine or Potrace, keep those tools under their own GPL licenses. ======================================================================== 7. Reserved name ======================================================================== Derivative fonts must not use "Insomnia" or "不寐" in their names. This condition is imposed by the present author on his own contribution to this font, and serves the same purpose as the "Reserved Font Name" mechanism of the SIL Open Font License: to prevent modified versions from being mistaken for official releases of this project. It does not restrict, and is not intended to restrict, anyone's rights to the upstream material described in sections 1-5 under those sections' own terms. ======================================================================== Attributions ======================================================================== * HZ Socho — MihailJP * GlyphWiki contributors (including MihailJP) * Computer Modern Unicode — Andrey V.
