# Paranoia Scape Recompiled Experimental PC recompilation project for the Japanese PlayStation release of **Paranoia Scape** (`SLPS-01375`), powered by [PSXRecomp](https://github.com/mstan/psxrecomp). > [!IMPORTANT] > This is an early work in progress. You must provide your own legally obtained > game dump. No game image, BIOS, copyrighted game data, or decryption material > is included. ## Current status | Feature | Status | |---|---| | Boot and gameplay | Working | | Tested progression | One full play-through to the ending, clean (2026-08-25); alternate routes unswept | | Framerate | 60 FPS target; ~2x performance headroom measured | | Audio and music | Working (SPU synthesis + CD-XA streaming) | | FMV / video | Working (native MDEC decode) | | Keyboard | Working, configurable in the launcher | | Controllers | Working, configurable in the launcher | | Memory cards | Present and mounted; save/load round trip not yet verified | | Save states and rewind | Experimental | | Display | Original 4:3 presentation | | Renderer | OpenGL recommended | Compatibility beyond early play is not yet established. Automated probing found no failures and no unknown code paths — see [`docs/verification-2026-08-23.md`](docs/verification-2026-08-23.md) for exactly what was and was not tested. Please report problems with the stage, route, renderer, settings used, and a screenshot where possible. ## Requirements - 64-bit Windows - A GPU with modern OpenGL support - Your own Paranoia Scape disc dump (`BIN` + `CUE`, 13 tracks) - The original game serial must be `SLPS-01375` ## Running the game (drop-folder flow, v0.2) 1. Make a folder. Put `Paranoiascape_Recompiled.exe` in it. 2. Drop your own legally dumped disc into the same folder (or a `disc/` subfolder). Redump-style `BIN`+`CUE` (13 tracks) is the canonical format. 3. **Optional — English patch:** download the Aeon Genesis English translation (v1.00, 2025-10-11) from Aeon Genesis and drop the `.xdelta` file next to your dump. On first start the game applies it to a staged copy automatically. Your original dump is never modified. The patch is not bundled with this project, at its author's request; please do not rehost it. 4. Start the exe. The launcher finds the disc itself, shows **Disc verified** (original and English-patched discs both verify), and PLAY starts the game. No file picker needed — it remains available as a fallback under **Change Disc**. > First run of a tester (setup) package also generates and builds the game > code from your disc. That one-time step needs Python 3 and an internet > connection (a portable compiler downloads automatically). No BIOS file is > required — OpenBIOS is bundled. ## Control layouts The game moves you around the playfield with the four face buttons (Triangle = up, Circle = right, Cross = down, Square = left). Two preset layouts ship in `controls/`: - **Default** (`controls/input-default.ini`) — the faithful original mapping. - **Enhanced** (`controls/input-enhanced.ini`) — the right stick mirrors the four face buttons (diagonals press two), and the A button also sends Start so every menu advances with A. To switch: copy the preset over `input.ini` next to the exe, then restart. The launcher's **Configure** button can further customize any binding. ## Help us test This is a **beta for testers**. The launcher has two links at the bottom: **Wiki** (background and documentation at [screamingmadgeorge.wiki](https://screamingmadgeorge.wiki/)) and **Send feedback**, which opens an email to the maintainer. When reporting, please include: how far you played, stage and route, whether you used the English patch, renderer and settings, and a screenshot of any problem. Most-wanted reports: full play-throughs, FMV and music issues, memory-card save/load round trips, and anything that looks geometrically wrong. ## Building from source Requires Python, CMake, Ninja and MinGW-w64 GCC (WinLibs). The `psxrecomp` and `recomp-ui` submodules point at forks ([LevonFrench/psxrecomp](https://github.com/LevonFrench/psxrecomp), [LevonFrench/recomp-ui](https://github.com/LevonFrench/recomp-ui)), branch `paranoiascape-v0.2`. Each is upstream plus one commit — the data-driven `[launcher]` block and drop-folder disc import in the framework, and the Paranoia Scape theme and site/feedback links in the launcher. They are generic features intended to be offered upstream. ```bash git clone https://github.com/LevonFrench/Paranoiascape-Recompiled.git cd Paranoiascape-Recompiled git submodule update --init git -C psxrecomp submodule update --init lib/retcomm-rbengine bash psxrecomp/tools/ci/build_emitters.sh python psxrecomp/psxrecomp_cli.py generate --config game.toml --project-root . \ --disc "disc-english/Paranoia Scape (Japan).cue" cmake -S . -B build-release -G Ninja -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release cmake --build build-release --target psx-runtime ``` `game.toml` currently targets the **English-patched** disc staged in `disc-english/` (your dump with the Aeon Genesis patch applied). To build against the original Japanese disc instead, point `[game] exe` / `disc` and `[prepare_disc] out_dir` at `disc/`, pass the `disc/` cue to `generate`, and rebuild. The function seeds are valid for both executables. Either way the folder must hold the cue **and** all 13 track bins — none of which are in this repository. On Windows, clone into a short path (for example `C:\src\`). The framework contains long file names, and a deep parent folder pushes the submodule checkout past the 260-character path limit ("Filename too long"). Alternatively run `git config --global core.longpaths true` first. If `psxrecomp-bios.exe` exits with `0xC0000139`, Windows has loaded an older `libstdc++-6.dll` (Git for Windows ships one) ahead of the WinLibs copy. Copy `libstdc++-6.dll` and `libgcc_s_seh-1.dll` from your WinLibs `bin/` folder next to the emitters in `build-recompiler/`. Add `-DPSX_DEBUG_TOOLS=ON` (in a separate build directory) for the TCP debug server used for verification. See [`walkthrough.md`](walkthrough.md) for the build gotchas, and `psxrecomp/docs/GAME_PROJECT_SETUP.md` for toolchain detail. ## Known limitations - Only the Japanese release identified by `SLPS-01375` is targeted. - Later stages and alternate routes still need extended testing. - Save states are development-oriented and may become incompatible after an update. - Widescreen is disabled; the game was authored for 4:3. ## Project documents - [`CHANGELOG.md`](CHANGELOG.md) — release history - [`RECOMP_GOALS.md`](RECOMP_GOALS.md) — the v0.2 goal list and release gate - [`walkthrough.md`](walkthrough.md) — orientation, build, run, gotchas - [`HANDOFF.md`](HANDOFF.md) — session continuity - [`task.md`](task.md) — active work and the verification checklist - [`docs/verification-2026-08-23.md`](docs/verification-2026-08-23.md) — the automated probe: what was tested and what was not - [`docs/framework-coverage.md`](docs/framework-coverage.md) — why the previous port's 49 hand-written runtime hooks are no longer needed - [`docs/intercept-audit.md`](docs/intercept-audit.md) — classification of the previous port's intercepts - [`design/launcher-redesign/`](design/launcher-redesign/README.md) — the website-themed launcher design package (mockup, motifs, theme tokens) - [`.wiki/`](.wiki/_index.md) — research notes: PS1 disc image formats, conversion, and the drop-folder importer design Some of these documents mention a previous, hand-maintained port and sibling projects by local path.
