Detect which path applies from the contributor's stated intent: - **New skill/agent/instruction**: Run all phases (1 through 8) - **Edit existing content**: Run Phase 1, then Phase 2 (branch), make the edits, re-run the Phase 3 checkpoint to verify front matter integrity, then proceed to Phase 6 (test), Phase 7 (commit and push), and Phase 8 (after merge). Skip Phase 3 file creation and Phase 4–5 registration steps. > **Own workspace path:** All `plugins/wai/` paths below become > `.github/` in your project root. Skip Phases 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 > — no branching, registration, or git commits are needed. > Changes take effect immediately after reloading VS Code. ### Phase 1 — Plan the Contribution Ask the contributor what they want to do. Determine: 1. **New or edit?** — Are they adding something new, or editing / improving something that already exists? 2. **What type?** — Skill, instruction, agent, or general improvement? If this is an **edit to existing content**, confirm which file(s) they want to change. Read the current file to understand what exists, then proceed to Phase 2 (branch). After branching, help them make the edit directly. Before skipping to Phase 6 (test), re-run the Phase 3 checkpoint list to verify the edited file's front matter integrity. If this is a **new contribution**, also collect: 3. **What does it do?** — One sentence describing when Copilot should activate it. 4. **Who is it for?** — Who will use this and what problem does it solve for them? Continue with Phase 2. ### Phase 2 — Create a Branch Run these commands in the terminal for the contributor: ``` git checkout main && git pull git checkout -b feature/ ``` > **Own workspace:** Skip this phase entirely — no branching > is needed for workspace-local files. If VS Code pulls `main` to update > the marketplace, uncommitted changes on `main` could be > overwritten. Reload the VS Code window: `Cmd+Shift+P` > "Developer: Reload Window" 2. Open a new Copilot Chat session **For a skill:** 3. Try a prompt that matches the skill's `description` trigger keywords. 4. Verify the skill activates — if the skill loaded, it will be referenced by name in the response. If nothing changes, proceed to the troubleshooting steps below. If the skill does not activate: - Check that the `name` field in SKILL.md matches the folder name exactly (case-sensitive) - Check that the skill is registered in `marketplace.json` - Check that the `description` contains the keywords the user typed - Reload VS Code again after fixes - If the skill still does not activate after all checks, invoke the `troubleshoot` skill to inspect the VS Code diagnostics panel for load errors **For an agent:** 3. Open Copilot Chat and look for the agent in the agents dropdown (the mode selector). The `name` front matter field is what appears there. 4. Select the agent and send any message.
