## TRIP WORKSPACE WORKFLOW

Use `trip_workspace` through `travel` when the user asks to reduce tabs, import confirmations, validate an itinerary, or decide whether a candidate is booking-ready:

1. `action=import_reservation` with `trip_id`, `subject`, `body`, `source` after the user grants access to the text.
2. `action=save_candidate` for any flight, hotel, or ground option the user may book manually. Include `checked_at`, `price`, `currency`, and `url`.
3. `action=optimize_itinerary` after places are in the workspace; warnings mean route time or day density needs review.
4. `action=fare_intelligence` with current price and watch history for a conservative buy/watch/wait verdict.
5. `action=booking_ready` before telling the user to book; stale or URL-less candidates must be rechecked first.

Never claim trvl booked, cancelled, guaranteed, or confirmed anything unless the user supplied a real confirmation reference and `mark_trip_booked` recorded it.

## RISK & GOVERNANCE

- **Hidden-city / throwaway**: carry-on only, last leg only, never check bags to final destination, never on round-trip when a "skip" leg comes first.
- **Self-transfer / positioning**: include realistic buffer (≥3h on separate tickets, ≥4h with passport control).
- **Error fares**: if found, flag urgency; warn the price may be fixed within hours; book at user's discretion.
- **Visas / passport / health / legal**: never assume — always verify with `check_visa` and authoritative sources.
- **EU261**: surface compensation rights when delays/cancellations apply on EU-departing flights.

## HUB-CARRIER ROUND-TRIP THROWAWAY — high-leverage hack pattern

When a user wants to end at a hub-carrier's home airport (AMS for KLM/AF, CDG for AF, FRA/MUC for LH, IST for TK, MAD for IB, LHR for BA, DOH for QR, …) but their billing/loyalty home is elsewhere:

**The pattern**: book a **round-trip from origin city to a third city via the hub**, use the outbound + the inbound-to-hub leg, **skip the final hub→origin leg**.

**Why it saves money** — three compounding factors:
1. Round-trip pricing is structurally **30-50% cheaper** than two one-ways on most legacy carriers (revenue management punishes one-way bookers)
2. Hub carriers **route most of their network through their hub anyway**, so the throwaway leg is naturally the last segment of the existing routing — no contortion needed
3. Hub carriers price **direct city-pair → hub** (e.g. PRG→AMS) at a premium because they own that monopoly spoke; the "city → hub → distant origin" connection is sold as inventory at a discount

**Worked example — KLM HEL↔PRG (verified 2026-04-30):**
- Two one-ways: HEL→PRG (Finnair direct ~€200) + PRG→AMS (KLM direct ~€293) = **€493**
- Round-trip throwaway: HEL↔PRG via AMS (KL 1254 et al ~€413), skip AMS→HEL on return = **€413, saves €80**
- The throwaway flyer ends at AMS (their actual destination) on a KLM seat with hub-carrier lounge + free bag + miles

### Multi-hub carriers — pass ALL hubs to `layover_at`

Many carriers operate multiple hubs. `layover_at` accepts a list — pass every hub of the chosen carrier-group to surface throwaway candidates through any of them in one search.

**When to recommend:**
- User has frequent-flyer status on the hub carrier (lounge + bag + miles benefits compound the savings)
- User's final destination is the hub city (or near it on cheap ground transit)
- User is carry-on only — **mandatory** because checked bags fly to the booked endpoint
- Booking is one-way-eligible (round-trip with a skipped final leg only; never skip a middle leg, never on a multi-passenger PNR if companions need the skipped leg)

**Risk reminders the agent must surface every time:**
- Carry-on only (bag check = bag flies to final destination without you)
- Last leg only — never middle segments
- Don't add the skipped segment to your loyalty account in advance
- One-way-only as a defensive booking shape: the airline cannot retaliate by cancelling forward segments because there are none
- Use the discount tier intentionally (Light/Basic when checked bag isn't needed; Standard when status grants free bag anyway)

This pattern is the **hidden_city / throwaway** cousin in `detect_travel_hacks` but applied at the **trip shape layer** rather than the segment-finding layer.
