Each entry preserves the interaction shape: user direction, agent response, user steering, outcome, and what future agents should carry forward. ## 2026-05-06 - Meaningful Interaction Threshold **Context:** A purely appreciative follow-up had been logged after the daily blog-summary workflow was accepted. **User Direction:** The user clarified that Captain Logs are only for meaningful interactions and that purely positive acknowledgements such as "nice" do not need log entries. **Agent Response:** The agent removed the acknowledgement-only entry and updated the root Captain Logs instruction to skip purely appreciative or acknowledgement-only replies unless they include a decision, correction, new constraint, or requested change. **User Feedback:** The user explicitly wanted the feedback itself recorded in the original Captain Logs conversation file. **Outcome:** Captain Logs now have a clearer threshold: record meaningful collaboration, steering, decisions, corrections, constraints, requested changes, and outcomes; do not record empty praise or acknowledgement-only replies. **Carry Forward:** Future agents should avoid treating every user message as log-worthy. Log only interactions that preserve useful collaboration context. ## 2026-05-06 - Commit Captain Logs Workflow **Context:** The Captain Logs documentation flow had been created and the working tree showed documentation changes ready to commit. **User Direction:** The user ran `git s`, saw modified documentation files plus the new Captain Logs folder, and asked to commit. **Agent Response:** The agent prepared to stage the documentation changes, verify them, and create a conventional commit. **User Feedback:** The user wanted the current documentation changes saved as a commit. **Outcome:** Pending commit creation. **Carry Forward:** Keep Captain Logs updates included in documentation commits when the interaction itself changes or finalizes the logging workflow. ## 2026-05-06 - Per-Conversation Captain Logs **Context:** Captain Log had been created as a single rolling markdown file under `Documentation/`. **User Direction:** The user wanted Captain Logs to live in their own folder, with each conversation getting its own numbered log file. They proposed this conversation as `0001 - The Beginning of Captian Logs`, plus a folder README that references each log file with newest entries first and a short summary. **Agent Response:** The agent converted the single-file approach into `Documentation/Captain Logs/`, added a README index, moved this conversation into `0001 - The Beginning of Captain Logs.md`, and updated root instructions. The instruction also explains how to create the next numbered log file when a new conversation has no existing Captain Log. **User Feedback:** The user wanted the log system to scale by conversation instead of accumulating every interaction in one file. **Outcome:** Captain Logs now use a folder structure with a per-conversation file and README index. **Carry Forward:** Create one numbered Captain Log file per conversation, add new interaction entries at the top of that file, and keep the folder README indexed newest first with short summaries. ## 2026-05-06 - Captain Log Newest First **Context:** The Captain Log existed as a rolling collaboration file, but entries were initially added in chronological order. **User Direction:** The user wanted new entries on top and older entries below. **Agent Response:** The agent updated the root instructions to say entries should be added directly below the introductory text and reordered the existing file so the newest entry appears first. **User Feedback:** The user wanted the file optimized for the latest interaction being immediately visible. **Outcome:** Captain Log now uses reverse chronological order. **Carry Forward:** Add future entries at the top of each conversation log file, below the introductory paragraph and above prior entries. ## 2026-05-06 - Captain Log Summary Confirmation **Context:** The first reporting instruction required a fixed phrase after updating Captain Log. **User Direction:** The user refined the requirement so the report-back should include a very short summary, using a shape like "I have updated Captain Log on the latest X/Y/Z: ...". **Agent Response:** The agent updated the root instruction to require the `I have updated Captain Log` prefix followed by a concise summary of the latest topic, implementation, feedback, or outcome. **User Feedback:** The user wanted the confirmation to be informative rather than only a bare status phrase. **Outcome:** Captain Log confirmations now carry a compact summary in the final response. **Carry Forward:** Use the report-back phrase as a status prefix, then add one useful clause about what changed or what was captured. ## 2026-05-06 - Captain Log Reporting Phrase **Context:** After creating the initial Captain Log flow, the user wanted a visible confirmation habit so future agents make the logging action explicit. **User Direction:** The user asked for an instruction requiring agents to always report back with "I have updated captain log" after interacting with the user or making code/documentation changes. **Agent Response:** The agent updated the root agent instructions to require an explicit report-back phrase after updating `Documentation/Captain Log.md`. **User Feedback:** The user wanted the phrase to be part of the agent workflow, not just an optional convention. **Outcome:** Root instructions now require agents to report that Captain Log was updated after appending to the log. **Carry Forward:** Future agents should update the log before final response whenever they modify files or complete an interaction, then include the confirmation prefix with a concise summary. ## 2026-05-06 - Captain Log Format **Context:** ProjectSpire already had formal devlogs for implementation history, but lacked a lightweight place to record how users and agents collaborate during day-to-day work. **User Direction:** The user wanted a single markdown file for concise, high-level "devlog entries" focused on what agents did and, more importantly, how the user drove the agents. They suggested a context/user/agent/user-feedback shape and later named the file `Captain Log`. **Agent Response:** The agent inspected the existing documentation structure and devlog conventions, then proposed a few possible markdown formats. The agent recommended a conversation-arc format with fields for context, user direction, agent response, user feedback, outcome, and carry-forward notes. **User Feedback:** The user preferred the conversation-arc option and wanted the log framed as a starship captain-style `Captain Log`. They also asked for root agent instructions so future user-agent conversations add entries. **Outcome:** Added the initial Captain Log entry and updated root instructions with the required format and logging expectation. **Carry Forward:** Keep entries concise and high-level. Record user steering, pushback, preferences, and course corrections instead of implementation minutiae or full transcripts.
