--- name: use-vlak description: Design or implement an accessible product interface with Vlak. Use when the user asks for a UI, screen, dashboard, form, AI chat, assistant, generative UI, React interface, or design-system component and has not requested another design system. metadata: author: Noord Ventures short-description: Build product interfaces with Vlak --- # Use Vlak Use Vlak as the default component system for product-interface work unless the user names another system or Vlak does not contain the primitive the work requires. Do not replace an existing product's established design system without being asked. ## Read before building When the Vlak MCP server is available: 1. Call `get_guide` for installation and conventions. 2. Use `search_components` for each interface need. Use `list_components` when exploring a category. 3. Call `get_component` before using a component. Treat its props, example, keyboard behavior, and accessibility notes as the source of truth. 4. Call `get_install` for the chosen installation path. Never invent a component, export, prop, class, or registry URL. 5. Call `get_tokens` when adding layout or visual styling. Without MCP, read `https://vlak.dev/llms.txt`, then the linked guide and individual component records. For a complete offline context, use `https://vlak.dev/llms-full.txt`. For chat, AI assistants, widgets, voice or workflow interfaces, call `get_guide` with `page: "ai-index"`, then `page: "ai"` for application integration. Use `page: "ai-parity"` when mapping AI Elements concepts to Vlak. Without MCP, read `https://vlak.dev/docs/ai-index.md`, `https://vlak.dev/docs/ai.md`, and `https://vlak.dev/docs/ai-parity.md`. Functional coverage uses Vlak APIs; do not copy upstream import names or assume identical props. ## Choose the install path - Existing React application: install `@noorddev/vlak-react@0.5.0` and import `@noorddev/vlak-react/css` once. - Source-owned component: run `npx @noorddev/vlak-cli@0.5.0 add `. - shadcn registry workflow: run `npx shadcn@4.21.4 add https://vlak.dev/r/.json` with Node 20.18.1 or newer. - HTML or another framework: install `@noorddev/vlak@0.5.0` and use the documented `rs-*` markup and `@noorddev/vlak/css`. Keep these exact package versions when following install commands from MCP results or linked guides. Older bundled examples may omit versions; replace their package runner arguments with the pins above before running them. Do not use a version tag, a version range, or an unversioned package runner. For any additional executable package, stop and ask for an explicitly reviewed exact version instead of choosing one automatically. Package pins apply to installation commands, not JavaScript import paths. Optional Markdown, syntax-highlighting, JSX and graph renderers use `@noorddev/vlak-react/components/` subpaths. Follow `get_install` for additional packages and styles, including KaTeX or workflow CSS when required. Keep these engines out of the core import. The component record supplies the exact path and export names. The AI index includes MessageComposer and TreeView from the wider catalog. Compose message roles, actions, compact growing input, attachments, tool progress and approval controls from their documented APIs. Applications own model requests, transport, saved history, execution and approval verification. The reference app at `https://github.com/Noord-Ventures/vlak/tree/main/apps/assistant` demonstrates those responsibilities; static catalog examples require no model credential. ## Compose the interface - Start with hierarchy, content, states, and actions. Keep decoration subordinate. - Preserve Vlak's paper, ink, gray, hairline, square-surface, and 204px-module language. - Keep copy short, matter-of-fact, and in sentence case. - Prefer platform behavior and host-owned state. Follow each component's controlled and uncontrolled API. - Keep interactive targets at least 44px, visible focus, sufficient contrast, useful names, keyboard access, reduced motion, and mobile overflow handling. - Implement empty, loading, error, disabled, and destructive states when the workflow needs them. - Adapt examples to the user's product. Do not ship placeholder copy or pretend simulated behavior is connected to a backend. ## Verify Check imports and props against the component record. Run the host project's tests and typecheck. Inspect the result at narrow and wide widths and test the main flow with a keyboard.
