Ask Onhand about this passage:

  • What's the main idea here?
  • Why does cramming work worse?
  • Select a sentence, then ask: Explain this simply.

Why spacing out study works

In the 1880s, Hermann Ebbinghaus memorized lists of nonsense syllables and tested how quickly he forgot them. Most of the forgetting came soon after learning: within a day, much of a new list was gone, and the losses slowed after that. This pattern is now called the forgetting curve.

Ebbinghaus also found that reviewing a list made it quicker to relearn, and that spreading the same amount of review across several days kept more of it than cramming it into one sitting. Psychologists call this the spacing effect.

Later research added a second idea: recalling something from memory strengthens it more than rereading it does. Quizzing yourself, known as the testing effect, works best when the questions come back at spaced intervals. Together, spaced and retrieval-based review are among the most reliable study strategies researchers have found.

Turn on Learning at the bottom of the panel, then ask Quiz me on this: Onhand tutors with questions instead of handing you the answer.

Where Onhand works

  • Articles, docs and course pages: open the page, then ask.
  • PDFs: Onhand opens them in its own viewer so it can highlight them.
  • Not on Chrome's own pages: Chrome doesn't let extensions read the Chrome Web Store or browser pages like the new tab page.
