When painting, Ensor may have thought back to paintings by Turner that he knew from reproductions or from his trip to England with Guillaume Vogels. He may have also seen the spectacular depiction of unleashed nature in works by John Martin or Franics Danby, two British painters from the early nineteenth century. Presumably Ensor identifies with Christ here, but the small size of the figures makes it difficult to determine."
