Harvey, the legal AI platform, mixes a cheap model with a frontier model — same quality, fraction of the cost. Fine-tuned small models are hitting near-frontier accuracy at 95% cost reduction. The market has spoken. For most of the work, it doesn't want the frontier. ## What Changed The efficiency trend isn't new — [post #030](/030-smarter-with-less.html) covered the compression race. What's new is the market confession. Businesses aren't choosing cheap models out of philosophical commitment to efficiency. They ran the numbers and discovered they can't tell the difference. That's the demand horizon surfacing in purchasing data. Most tasks — email drafts, contract summaries, code boilerplate, customer routing — live comfortably within what a fine-tuned 8B model can produce. The frontier model isn't 95% better at summarizing a contract. It's 95% more expensive. The frontier is getting compressed from three directions: 1. **Below:** cheap general models handle routine work — 90% of volume, indistinguishable output, a fraction of the cost. 2. **Above:** specialists handle the hard domain work — and companies are buying them outright. 3. **Sideways:** the wall from #031. Regulation locks the most dangerous capabilities behind export controls, review windows, and incident reporting. The frontier tier that survives the market squeeze becomes inaccessible anyway. The frontier generalist survives in a shrinking middle. Tasks too hard for cheap models, too general for specialists, but not dangerous enough to be locked up. That zone exists. The US government asked them to hold the public launch. Cheaper siblings Terra and Luna get wider access. Anthropic restored Mythos 5 for vetted US groups only. The wall is being built in real time. The specialist wave isn't theoretical — the money confirms it. Mistral acquired Emmi AI for physics simulation: fluid dynamics, material stress, the kind of physics that determines whether a turbine blade survives. ASML runs specialist vision models on their EUV lithography line — defect detection dropped from hours to eight minutes, saving ten hours of downtime on machines that cost more than data centers. Google's Gemini for Science doesn't try to be one model that knows science; it wires a generalist into specialized databases and publishes in *Nature*. Procurement doesn't buy benchmark scores. They buy outcomes. And outcomes are always domain-specific. ## The Inversion Here's the part that should make you uncomfortable. The cheap models aren't just cheaper — they're more *verifiable*. Not because they're more capable. Because they operate within human capability range. The discernment ceiling from #031 cuts hardest on frontier output: tasks so hard that no human can check the work. But cheap models handle tasks *within* human range — contract review, code patterns, data classification. The work is difficult enough to automate but simple enough to check. When a fine-tuned 8B model drafts a summary, a paralegal can verify it. When a frontier model produces a novel legal analysis that no lawyer in the room fully understands, nobody can. The frontier offers power you can't verify. The accessible tier offers competence you can. For most business use, that's not a trade — it's a verdict. ## The Middle Nobody Wants The frontier generalist was supposed to be the future: one model that does everything. Instead it's becoming the model that does nothing uniquely well. Cheap models do the routine work cheaper. Specialists do the hard work sharper. Regulation walls off the dangerous capabilities that made the frontier impressive.
