# Terms of Use **keepIT** · Effective 16 October 2026 keepIT is free, open-source software for notes: an Android app, a web app and a server you run yourself. It is a personal project by Richard Leopold (“the developer”), not a service. These terms apply when you create an account on a keepIT server, and to what you store and share with it. The [privacy policy](PRIVACY.md) explains what happens to your data. ## In short - **keepIT is software, not a service.** The developer runs no keepIT servers, and cannot see, moderate or remove anything stored on one. - **Each server has an operator,** who decides who may use it and may set rules of their own. - **Don’t use keepIT to store or share content that is illegal or that harms other people.** ## Who runs your server A keepIT server is run by whoever installed it — “the operator”: you on your own hardware, or a friend, family member or organisation who invited you. It is their machine, so their rules apply in addition to these, and they decide what happens to the accounts and notes on it. The Android app also works with no server at all; nothing in it is then shared with anyone. ## What you must not store or share When you share a note, the people you share it with see it. Don’t use keepIT to store or share: - content that sexually exploits or endangers children; - content that is illegal where you or the people you share it with live; - harassment, threats, bullying, or hate against a person or a group; - content that promotes violence or terrorism; - someone else’s private information, or work that is not yours to share, without their permission; - malware, phishing, spam, or anything meant to deceive the people you share with. ## Unwanted sharing - **Nothing shared reaches you until you accept it.** A shared note arrives as an invitation in your keepIT inbox; decline it and you never see the note. - **You can leave a shared note at any time:** open it and choose Leave note on the web, or Leave in the note’s share sheet on Android. It disappears from your notes. - **Report content or a person to the operator** of your server. If you believe something on a keepIT server is illegal, you can also report it to the authorities where you live. ## No warranty keepIT is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, under the [MIT License](LICENSE). Keep your own copy of anything important: Settings → Your data exports everything you own as a single file, on the web and on Android. ## Ending your use You can stop using keepIT at any time and delete your account in the app; the [privacy policy](PRIVACY.md#your-control-over-your-data) says how and what that removes. The operator of a server may close accounts on it. ## Changes to these terms Changes are published in this file, and every earlier version stays visible in the [project history](https://github.com/Richy1989/keepIT/commits/main/TERMS.md). The date at the top shows when they last changed. ## Contact Questions about these terms or about keepIT: [support@hyperstarit.org](mailto:support@hyperstarit.org), or [open an issue on GitHub](https://github.com/Richy1989/keepIT/issues). For content on a particular keepIT server, contact the person who runs it.
