The **Manage permissions** action on a document lets you grant read or write access in two ways: - Role-based permission: Grant read or write access to every user who has a specified role. For example, granting write access to a role held by the audit owners lets all the users with that role edit the document. - User-based permission: Grant read or write access to a specific user, a group, or an existing condition that you select. A user can be granted access through more than one permission, for example, through both a role-based permission and a user-based permission. In this case, the user receives the higher level of access. **Note:** Document permissions configured from **Manage permissions** are separate from the file access permission records described in [File access permissions](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ServiceNow/ServiceNowDocs/australia/markdown/australia/governance-risk-compliance/audit-management/file-access-permissions.md), which apply to cloud files linked through the Microsoft integration rather than to documents in the Documents panel. For the steps to configure document permissions, see [Set document permissions](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ServiceNow/ServiceNowDocs/australia/markdown/australia/governance-risk-compliance/audit-management/set-document-permissions.md).
