# Create specification characteristics

Define characteristics for a product, service, or resource specification.

## Before you begin

[Create product characteristics and characteristic options](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ServiceNow/ServiceNowDocs/australia/markdown/australia/order-management/som-product-config-add-characteristics.md) that can be selected for a specification.

Role required: sn\_prd\_pm\_product\_catalog\_admin

## Procedure

1.  In the CRM Workspace, select the **List** \[Omitted image "list-outline-24.svg"\] Alt text: view.

2.  Navigate to **Specifications** and select the specification for which characteristics are to be defined.

3.  In the Specification Characteristics tab, select **New**.

4.  In the form, fill in the fields.

    |Field|Description|
    |-----|-----------|
    |Characteristic|Characteristic for the specification. Select the characteristic.|
    |Characteristic option|Characteristic option for the product offering. Select a characteristic option.|
    |Order|Numerical order for the options. Options designated with the number 1 appear first in the order.|
    |Specification|Name of the specification that you selected.|
    |Mandatory|Option indicating that the characteristic option is required to complete the order.|
    |Default|Option indicating this characteristic option is the default choice.|

5.  Select **Save**.
