# Document references

References are used for linking a document record to other records, which can be any other table or record on the platform.

A reference is a link or mapping between a document and a target or a parent record.

You can add references directly and view all document references in other records across the platform by navigating to **Documents** > **References**.

You can create and link document references directly from references or from the document record.

- **[Create document references from document record](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ServiceNow/ServiceNowDocs/australia/markdown/australia/servicenow-platform/document-management-services/link-document-with-reference.md)**
Link the document record to other records in any other table or record.
- **[Create document reference from References](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ServiceNow/ServiceNowDocs/australia/markdown/australia/servicenow-platform/document-management-services/create-doc-ref-doc-form.md)**
