🎣 Common Pool Resources: Overfishing

Understanding the Tragedy of the Commons and Policy Solutions

Choose a Fishery Scenario:

Typical fishing ground with moderate resource depletion Heavily exploited fishery with very high external costs Well-managed fishery with moderate externality Premium fishery with high demand and significant depletion costs
Basic Overfishing: Individual fishermen compete to catch fish from a common fishing ground. Each fisherman's catch depletes the resource, imposing costs on all others.
💡 Insight: Adjust parameters or select a scenario to explore the tragedy of the commons.

💡 The Tragedy of the Commons

When a resource is open-access, each fisherman's private decision ignores the depletion costs imposed on everyone else. The competitive equilibrium (e꜀) occurs where P = MCp, overproducing relative to the social optimum (eₛ) where P = MCs. The gap between the two curves equals the marginal external cost.
