I am calling the genre a 'pancake adventure' because the story tree is an experimental format where it is short but very wide so that on subsequent play-throughs things can be totally different. If you play through the demo a couple of times and make different decision you will start to see the flexibility of the story!

]]> The Ungrateful Son The Ungrateful Son https://gumpyfunction.itch.io/the-ungrateful-son Gumpy Function Back in January of 2022, Robert Dorman released a video on Art Carts. He asked the question "What would a book look like on a Game Boy". I was inspired by this thought and the end result is this - "The Ungrateful Son" by the Brothers Grimm, adapted for the Game Boy. The Game Boy itself has a form factor similar to a small book, and I was interested in seeing how I could present long strings of text in a way that wasn't difficult to comprehend. I was drawn to the Brother's Grimm fairy tales when deciding what to create. The stories are reasonably short which suits the handheld and they allow for illustrations which serve to break up the text and offer a moment to rest between reading. They also contain themes and imagery that will excite children while still engaging adults. This was important to me because the Game Boy is a console that has been enjoyed by all ages since its release and I felt it's important to make sure the story caters to that same wide demographic. The story is intended for use with the Game Boy (download the ROM below and flash to a cart or similar) or the Analogue Pocket (.pocket file available to download below). Ikalo Pann, the Captain of the Star Leviathan, navigated through the debris surrounding the derelict ship until it was within scanner range. A scan of the ship pinged with no purchase for organics, life support systems were still functional, but losing power. With no signs of life coming from the vessel, they feared the worst but proceeded to dock with the airlock and climb aboard. Upon entering the main deck, they noticed the warped sound of a klaxon going off, echoing down the halls. Ikalo signaled to her crew to follow her further into the ship towards the living quarters. As they entered the next room, the warning alarm suddenly stopped and the doors behind them shut tight, followed by the grinding gears of a locking mechanism. The display on a monitor in the middle of the room came to life, a cursor pulsed rhythmically, illuminating the Captain's surroundings with a soft neon green glow. Suddenly, a pattern of lights animated on the monitor, and as they came to rest, a puzzle appeared over the on-screen grid. It was clear that this was all tied to the ship. They had fallen into a trap! There was only one hope - solve the puzzles to bypass the locks... and as the power continued to drain from what little remained of the backup power and life support systems, it was only a matter of time before they succumbed to their fate.
