Being present, is about more than words

So a few months ago back in April I was chatting with my developer advocate colleague @ajmaradiaga about my new role as a Community Advocate and doing more outreach. Attending more events in person specifically, and one type of event that we need to be present at is the SAP Inside Track (SIT's) and I was invited by the amazing team in Brazil that runs so many SIT events in Brazil. In particular I was asked to attend, and then asked to speak, and then speak twice, at the SIT in São Paulo. The goal of this outreach was to have our team of Community Advocates be more present and listen and talk in person more, and not just online. In talking about this plan with Developer Advocate Antonio Maradiaga he had a thought. After the success of last years LATAM roadshow (that he and I did) he said since he was going to do it again this year with a goal to visit a few cities they hadn't been to, Lima Peru and Mexico city, and also a repeat visit in Bogota. But since I was going to be in São Paulo on a Saturday for the SIT and the encontro the day before (Antonio helped organize a local meetup called an encontro and @RobertaFernande picked a great spot) maybe I could host a #CodeJam there and then meet him and @RichHeilman the next week in Lima. Of course I agreed and the plan was set to use the SAP office and have a GenAI CodeJam in São Paulo.

Fast forward to SAP Sapphire in Orlando. I’m giving a presentation on community and also attending meetings with the SAP Mentors. In one meeting I’m next to @ChrisRae and he says “mate, gotta head to an #Apphaus meeting, can you join?"

I say sure and follow him over. Then when I walk in, I’m amazed to see a lot of faces in person that I’d been emailing with about growing the SAP Community presence at the Apphaus locations. I say a few words and talk about how the team of Developer Advocates can host a CodeJam or I can have meetings at their space if they are willing to host. All of the partners love this idea. Then a person came up at the end of the meeting named Renan Guedes. He said he runs the Apphaus in São Paulo and wanted me to visit when I was there. I said hey, why don’t I ask Antonio to move the CodeJam from our office to the Apphaus.

I land in Brazil. My colleague @SavioMarques agrees to pick me up and we can go to get a coffee then attend get to the CodeJam and setup early. Savio showing me the best coffee!

It’s a great space and the team at Exed Consulting are so gracious. They welcome our local attendees and we are off showcasing how to sue GenAI in BTP. I have great conversations in English as my Portuguese is, lacking. We even did a podcast!

Then after we have gone through our 5-6 hours of content we break for day. I’m hopeful to see a few of the attendees at the meetup along with some of the SIT attendees who are already in town. I’m blown away. We get about 25 people. Several form the CodeJams and several sit. A few SAP Champions are there like @Marssel700 and I even get a present for the next day, a couple of shirts, SIT shirts. One even has my name.

I’m not too tired but want to make sure I’m able to get some rest and prepare for my two sessions and also have great conversations so I head back to the hotel, which for some reason has blue stains on the pillow case?

I called this section “being present, the reality” but I had no idea just how many great conversations I would have. How many photos I would take with the attendees. Roberta even made a Brazilian flat Josh!!!

I give my presentation on the technical side of the conference. I have a great lunch with a few locals and then my colleague Savio makes sure I meetup with a new colleague I met at the CodeJams named Arthur who agrees to make sure if I need anything he’s there to help. Everyone is so kind. For those interested in a photo but don't want a 1-1 we meet at the court for a group photo!

My second presentation is great and the audience is very happy when I end with a slide stating “Vai Conrinthians!” and the logo of the local favorite football team (soccer to me…), that was my loudest applause and cheers of the day!

We have a wrap up meal with several of the SIT organizers and then the next I'm off to Lima Peru where there are two code jams and a meetup Called a quedada locally. Me and the crew meet in the hotel lobby to strategize!

The first of two CodeJam's is on ABAP so Rich takes the lead showing how to use Joule with ABAP code and prompting the system to give contextual responses based on the functions you put into your ABAP code. The group in Lima is loving it and the exercises fly by as they consume code they know but in a new way. ABAP CodeJam Lima

I won’t be able to stay for the second CodeJam due to my travel schedule, but that’s ok cause I am sure the Lima attendees are in good hands with Antonio and Rich. I even heard that most of the GenAI content on day 2 was translated on the fly to español by Antonio.

My favorite memory of the CodeJam and quedada was what I usually say about every event, the people. Conversations about music, food, life. The amount of time some attendees took to travel to be with us is staggering and so overwhelming. Being present really does something for me that I am not sure the attendees of our community event’s realize. It’s not about what we discuss, what they learn, what product issue we may solve. It’s the connection, the memories made together that are chapters in this amazing virtual novel I'm writing, event by event, called “My SAP Community journey”. I hope you can all be present with us in some way and write your own stories. Obrigado, gracias and thank you!

Story Time - The letters "D" and "K"

Hey, everybody. I'm here today in the Newtown Square Library, and I want to share something with you in story time mode. Today's story is going to focus on two letters, the letters D and K. Now, those letters might make you think of a band or maybe a fashion icon, but for me, they connect to something different.

Back in June, I was lucky enough to get to go to our SAP developer meeting in Dresden, Germany, and then I also went to the one in Mannheim. While I was in Dresden, I met someone who rocks blue hair like me. Her name is Doreen Kaestner. here is a photo of me and Doreen.

And she gave me something. This bracelet. I'm not a Swifty, but I have a friendship bracelet now from Doreen from Dresden, and it says SAP Dresden on it. And I've worn it ever since. The only time I take it off is when I touch up my beard, which I need to do this weekend. But I don't want to get blue hair dye all over the bracelet. So that's the only time I take it off. Otherwise, it stays on. And it's not just about Dresden and Doreen. It's a reminder of the entire SAP community, the family I'm proud to be a part of.

So fast forward a few weeks. I'm down in the LATAM Roadshow in South America. I do a few events in Brazil and Lima, Peru. And then I go home because it's time for vacation. And I found myself with my family in Stockholm, Sweden. Out of nowhere, in old city near the water, someone shouts, Hey, I know you! You're from SAP. And I was like, yeah. I shook his hand and I said, hey, what's your name? He said, I'm Dorian Kaucher, DK, another DK, just like Doreen. Dorian works in a small office in southern Germany called Markdorf and focuses on sustainability initiatives. And when I asked if I could take a picture with him, he said, well, I need one, too, because I want to show all my colleagues back in the office that I met you.

Honestly it's it's crazy because you all make me so much better by being a part of this SAP community by showing up and by connecting but it's so flattering right the energy i get from being able to be recognized is awesome and i appreciate that but i wish i could remember all your names and all your initials when i meet you but these moments they matter they matter to me so know that i do keep them inside they really do matter so from Dresden to Stockholm June to August, all the way through the year, all the way through Latin America, all the time. I'm thinking about you and you give me so much energy. And I love being a part of this SAP community because of that and because of you. So I invite you, though, that if you need something, I can help you connect to other people. So for Dorian, if you want to connect with him and talk about sustainability initiatives and all the great work him and his team are doing down in Markdorf, let me know. And if you need help from Doreen with some development, she's over in Dresden and if she can't help you with her SAP skills, maybe somebody else on the team can, she'll help connect you. I love being a connector, and other people can then connect others from that. So it's a great thing being a part of this SAP community, online and in person.

And speaking of online, Devtoberfest starts the last week of September. So I hope you're registered, and we'll see you online for that for four weeks. And then on November 4th, we're going to be online and in person for SAP TechEd. We're going to be in Berlin November 4th through 6th as well as Louisville, KY the same dates with an on tour stop, and then some of us go the next week to Sydney, Australia and after that a couple weeks later we're in Bengaluru, India.

A recap of my amazing 4 stops in Brazil for the 3rd annual LATAM Roadshow 2026

As you may have seen we had an amazing 3rd SAP CodeJam LATAM roadshow organized for the third year by @ajmaradiaga and while I couldn't be there in March I made it down for not only some CodeJams but also an SAP Inside Track. I got to meet with some amazing SAP Community Members, a few of our SAP Champions and some of my Community Relations colleagues. Here is my stop by stop recap.

Day 1 in #Brazil of my third annual LATAM roadshow for is completed (not counting travel days 😜 ) where I got to see some of the amazing sites in #Curitiba before heading to a meetup with a few colleagues, organizers, and an amazing sponsor: CHPro

The AI Core CodeJam with @thomas_jung and @RichHeilman was sponsored by the amazing team at CHPro Solutions led by Calixto Herkert and our location host university Escola Politécnica PUCPR.

Stop number two of the LATAM roadshow for me was an amazing trip to a Campinas, a city just north to the north of São Paulo. The event is an SAP inside track (SAP Inside Track Campinas Inside Track Brasil 🇧🇷 just outside of Sao Paulo ) and I get to connect with my colleagues @antonia_zorn @noravonthenen and @Vitaliy-R , as well as continue with @RichHeilman and @thomas_jung , but unfortunately for Rich and Thimas, this will be their last stop of the tour.

Also exciting is getting to meet so many community members, especially our SAP champions @RobertaFernande , @MRobalinho , and @Marssel700 . Truly, there were so many volunteers and an amazing campus that hosted our event lots of great sponsors and familiar faces form the last two years. Kicking off today with a co-presentation with Antonia was fun and then watching my colleagues present, as well as so many other customers and partners from the SAP community. It was so many people learning and sharing about SAP in the Brazil community, it’s just something that I cannot express enough, how vibrant the Volunteer SAP Community is and the interest of the attendees. The food was amazing. The capybara‘s were amazing and I appreciated every conversation and photo, but I’m sure you could tell that….

Next, we got together for a meet up at an amazing local brewery. I don’t even think there was a way to count the number of people who came over and enjoyed time together socializing.

But like all good things this stop had to come to an end so me, Nora, Vitaliy and Antonia packed up and are off to our next stop Porto Alegre. See you there!

My 3rd stop of the LATAM CodeJam tour was continuing with Vitaliy Rudnytskiy , Nora von Thenen and Antonia Zorn to São Leopoldo/ Porto Alegre. This southern Brazil city and its people are amazing but wow the SAP Labs office is sooooo amazing.

We had two CodeJams and a meetup between Monday/Tuesday. A packed house both days. And a special shoutout to our local support who’ve been with me in Curitiba and will also join at my last sip of Recife. Vitor Ugo Fiori Vitória Cristofolli.

The CodeJams were amazing and the attendees so great at participating and engaging both days. It was also great to attend a meetup at a local German themed fun event center with billiards and bowling. And I got to eat my first Xis thanks to Vitor’s guidance. I also got to trip in dramatic fashion in Parque Moinhos de Vento while out for a jog with Vitaliy, and thank goodness he was right there to pick me up as any good Developer Advocate would do!

On a side note, I also was lucky enough to meet some local SAP colleagues who before now I’ve only seen online. Thank you for your time and I wish we had more chances to meet as we are all SAP family.

And stop 4 for me of the LATAM Brazil roadshow is in the books. It’s actually the end of the whole tour for the team in Brazil which is sad but was such a great time for the SAP Community . A special shoutout to Vitória Cristofolli and Vitor Ugo Fiori for their support.

Arriving from Porto Alegre to #Recife was such a dramatic change. A northern coastal town with such a different look and feel to the architecture and of course the ocean views

I did a quick tour of the downtown and actually got to see the first synagogue ever built in the Americas (Synagoga Kahal Zur Israel) which showed me so much personal history I never thought I’d experience and will share with my Rabbi.

Then it was back to work. Me, Nora von Thenen , Vitaliy Rudnytskiy and Antonia Zorn were hosted by the amazing team at Accenture led by João Otto Gethmann Jr .

The attendees were so warm and attentive and enjoyed learning from Witalij on day 1 and Nora on day 2. Me and Antonia shared about the community and also had the pleasure of seeing so many locals at our meetup on a rooftop.

Stories were shared, local food and drink consumed and code discussions all around. SAP Community, #barbaAzul shall return…

My weekend event where I didn't think about work...

While this isn't enough for a hobbies series post I did want to showcase for those not in the Philadelphia, PA USA area the amazing local run that I get to participate in that has 40,000 runners. My mile time is getting slower so I need to be better about training, but hey, I finished! This was my 6th Broad Street 10 Miler in a row last 6 years. I started jogging more when the pandemic shut down our exercise facilities. I did a few half marathons but that caused more injury than healthy side effects. Maybe when I am lighter a few pounds/kilos I will attempt longer than 10 miles/18KM. Feel free to comment here with your local runs or other events you love.

SAP TechEd’s 30^th anniversary!

Can you believe that SAP TechEd turns thirty this year? Let’s party like it’s 1996 (portable CD Discman anyone?!) In honor of all the great TechEd moments, we’ll take a trip down memory lane with you, celebrating TechEd’s legacy as the premier technical event for developers in the past, the present, and especially into the future.

We’ll be back in Berlin this October with the full-fledged, in-person, old school, TechEd experience you know and love. So, what’s in the works? Fear not, my friend! Throughout the three days, we'll be livestreaming sessions from Berlin for our live virtual show. Many of our in-person Berlin sessions will be streamed live and available on-demand, and we’ll also have a virtual Q&A experience, where experts field questions from both live and virtual audiences. In fact, much of our virtual show will take place from our virtual studio right on the Berlin show floor, with exclusive segments designed for our virtual audience.

Picture this: your team is building something incredibly cool with SAP Business AI Platform, maybe integrations, AI core, Joule for Consultants, BDC.... You're solving a real business problem, poking at new features, maybe leaning on a component using AI in a new way to move faster, and genuinely having fun while you do it.

Now picture doing that live, on stage, in front of an amazing crowd of SAP fans (friends, really) at SAP TechEd Berlin.

You've probably guessed it by now. Demo Jam is back, and we're counting on this community to bring the goods.

For the newcomers, here's the recap

Demo Jam is an interactive, competitive showcase. No decks, no fluff, just real demos and real personality on stage.

To participate, you submit an idea and then bring it to life live in front of your peers. **No slides.** Just a real demo and whatever makes your team, your team. Six teams will get the stage, six minutes each, and the crowd decides the winner with the trusty applause-o-meter. Make some noise. Only 2 speakers per team will get Lecture-Only passes, but of course more colleagues can help you behind the scenes.

Before you submit, a few things to know

Timing is everything. You get 6 minutes, and only 6 minutes. Go over, and the buzzer finds you. Nobody likes a buzzkill.
The demo has to be live. No slides, no pictures, no videos, no AI-generated stand-ins. If it's not a real demo, it's not a jam. Also, sales and marketing submissions won't make it past review, have code and live systems ready to show.
Show us how you used SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Business Data Cloud, and/or SAP Business AI to solve an actual business use case. We want to see the problem and the solution.
This year, Demo Jam takes the stage in the Community Clubhouse, on the Community Theater stage.

Let's talk details

1. **Who can participate?** All SAP customers, on their own or alongside an SAP partner, can submit a proposal, not partners only.

2. **How do I participate?** Submit your proposal with all the details **Demo Jam 2026 Submissions**.

3. **What happens after I submit?** Our SAP experts review every submission and select up to 6 teams for the Demo Jam final in Berlin.

4. **How many team members are allowed?** No limit on the team building the demo, but only 2 team members can present on stage.

Here's our timeline

We're moving fast this year, so mark your calendar now.

1. Submit your proposal between **July 23 and August 5**.

2. We'll review and select teams **August 6 through August 14**.

3. Selected teams will receive confirmation and next steps **after August 14**.

4. Finalize and rehearse your demo, submissions locked in by **September 28**.

5. Jam live on stage during SAP TechEd Berlin, will be end of day 1 or 2, TBD between **October 27-29**.

5. **Do we get SAP TechEd tickets?** Each selected team gets 2 lecture-only tickets (upgradeable to Full Conference, if seats remain, by paying the difference).

6. **Is travel and expense covered?** No, T&E is not covered.

Alright, SAP community. It's that time again.

Every year I get to stand up (beard freshly blued, thank you) and ask the same question: who's got something worth sharing? And every year, you all prove that some of the best sessions at SAP TechEd don't come from a our teams internally, but they come from you, in the trenches, building real things with SAP tech and living to tell the tale.

So here we go again. Are you knee-deep in SAP BTP architecture? Have you finally tamed ABAP Cloud extensibility and want to show the scars? Poking at Joule for Developers and found something nobody's talking about yet? This is your shot to bring it to the Community Theater stage in Berlin.

How was that for a pitch? If it landed, keep reading, here's everything you need to know. Here is a view of a CT Talk overflowing last year with standing room only, maybe this could be you this year.

But first, the headline: **we need your Community Theater submission in the next two weeks by August 5th.** Don't let this one slip past you.

What you need to know

Community Talks are 20-minute sessions. Presentation, demo, improv, props, a game if that's your thing, whatever gets your point across.
This format is BY the community, FOR the community. Lessons learned, best practices, "here's the thing I built and here's what broke along the way," it's all fair game.
If your proposal is accepted, you'll be paired with one of our Developer Advocates or another community leader as your co-speaker to help introduce you and get your talk going.
Accepted speakers get one Lecture-Only ticket to SAP TechEd Berlin (upgradeable to Full Conference, if seats remain, by paying the difference).
We have approximately [30] Lecture-Only passes to award this year, so bring your best. (you can have multiple speakers in your session but only one pass awarded to the submitter of the CT Talk)
Travel and expenses are not covered by SAP.

I'm in! How do I participate?

Quick heads up again: we're running an accelerated timeline this year, so don't sit on this one. You've got **two weeks** to get your Community Theater submission in.

**In a nutshell:**

1. Submit your proposal between **July 23 and August 5**.

2. We'll review and select submissions **August 6 through August 14**.

3. Our goal is for selected speakers to receive invite instructions **after August 14**, including your Developer Advocate co-speaker pairing and speaker pass. This date is subject to logistics approval.

4. Submit your session material (presentation, demo recording) for review by **September 28**.

5. Deliver your session live during SAP TechEd Berlin, on your assigned day between **October 27-29**.

Yes, it's a tighter window than usual. We're doing it because we want to get selections and speaker passes into your hands as early as possible and ensure you can choose from our new product tracks to align with your speech topic. We'll coordinate scheduling as best we can so you can deliver your session and still catch the other sessions you want to see. And maybe watch or participate in this year's DemoJam!!!
