SAP CodeJam Roadshow LATAM - 2025, the First Half Recap, Being Present is About More Than Words.

Being present, is about more than words

So a few months ago back in April I was chatting with my developer advocate colleague @ajmaradiaga about my new role as a Community Advocate and doing more outreach. Attending more events in person specifically, and one type of event that we need to be present at is the SAP Inside Track (SIT's) and I was invited by the amazing team in Brazil that runs so many SIT events in Brazil. In particular I was asked to attend, and then asked to speak, and then speak twice, at the SIT in São Paulo. The goal of this outreach was to have our team of Community Advocates be more present and listen and talk in person more, and not just online. In talking about this plan with Developer Advocate Antonio Maradiaga he had a thought. After the success of last years LATAM roadshow (that he and I did) he said since he was going to do it again this year with a goal to visit a few cities they hadn't been to, Lima Peru and Mexico city, and also a repeat visit in Bogota. But since I was going to be in São Paulo on a Saturday for the SIT and the encontro the day before (Antonio helped organize a local meetup called an encontro and @RobertaFernande picked a great spot) maybe I could host a #CodeJam there and then meet him and @RichHeilman the next week in Lima. Of course I agreed and the plan was set to use the SAP office and have a GenAI CodeJam in São Paulo.

Being present, again and unintended effects:

Fast forward to SAP Sapphire in Orlando. I’m giving a presentation on community and also attending meetings with the SAP Mentors. In one meeting I’m next to @ChrisRae and he says “mate, gotta head to an #Apphaus meeting, can you join?"

I say sure and follow him over. Then when I walk in, I’m amazed to see a lot of faces in person that I’d been emailing with about growing the SAP Community presence at the Apphaus locations. I say a few words and talk about how the team of Developer Advocates can host a CodeJam or I can have meetings at their space if they are willing to host. All of the partners love this idea. Then a person came up at the end of the meeting named Renan Guedes. He said he runs the Apphaus in São Paulo and wanted me to visit when I was there. I said hey, why don’t I ask Antonio to move the CodeJam from our office to the Apphaus.

I land in Brazil. My colleague @SavioMarques agrees to pick me up and we can go to get a coffee then attend get to the CodeJam and setup early. Savio showing me the best coffee!

It’s a great space and the team at Exed Consulting are so gracious. They welcome our local attendees and we are off showcasing how to sue GenAI in BTP. I have great conversations in English as my Portuguese is, lacking. We even did a podcast!

Then after we have gone through our 5-6 hours of content we break for day. I’m hopeful to see a few of the attendees at the meetup along with some of the SIT attendees who are already in town. I’m blown away. We get about 25 people. Several form the CodeJams and several sit. A few SAP Champions are there like @Marssel700 and I even get a present for the next day, a couple of shirts, SIT shirts. One even has my name.

I’m not too tired but want to make sure I’m able to get some rest and prepare for my two sessions and also have great conversations so I head back to the hotel, which for some reason has blue stains on the pillow case?

I called this section “being present, the reality” but I had no idea just how many great conversations I would have. How many photos I would take with the attendees. Roberta even made a Brazilian flat Josh!!!

I give my presentation on the technical side of the conference. I have a great lunch with a few locals and then my colleague Savio makes sure I meetup with a new colleague I met at the CodeJams named Arthur who agrees to make sure if I need anything he’s there to help. Everyone is so kind. For those interested in a photo but don't want a 1-1 we meet at the court for a group photo!

My second presentation is great and the audience is very happy when I end with a slide stating “Vai Conrinthians!” and the logo of the local favorite football team (soccer to me…), that was my loudest applause and cheers of the day!

We have a wrap up meal with several of the SIT organizers and then the next I'm off to Lima Peru where there are two code jams and a meetup Called a quedada locally. Me and the crew meet in the hotel lobby to strategize!

The first of two CodeJam's is on ABAP so Rich takes the lead showing how to use Joule with ABAP code and prompting the system to give contextual responses based on the functions you put into your ABAP code. The group in Lima is loving it and the exercises fly by as they consume code they know but in a new way. ABAP CodeJam Lima

I won’t be able to stay for the second CodeJam due to my travel schedule, but that’s ok cause I am sure the Lima attendees are in good hands with Antonio and Rich. I even heard that most of the GenAI content on day 2 was translated on the fly to español by Antonio.

My favorite memory of the CodeJam and quedada was what I usually say about every event, the people. Conversations about music, food, life. The amount of time some attendees took to travel to be with us is staggering and so overwhelming. Being present really does something for me that I am not sure the attendees of our community event’s realize. It’s not about what we discuss, what they learn, what product issue we may solve. It’s the connection, the memories made together that are chapters in this amazing virtual novel I'm writing, event by event, called “My SAP Community journey”. I hope you can all be present with us in some way and write your own stories. Obrigado, gracias and thank you!

Story Time - The letters "D" and "K"

Hey, everybody. I'm here today in the Newtown Square Library, and I want to share something with you in story time mode. Today's story is going to focus on two letters, the letters D and K. Now, those letters might make you think of a band or maybe a fashion icon, but for me, they connect to something different.

Back in June, I was lucky enough to get to go to our SAP developer meeting in Dresden, Germany, and then I also went to the one in Mannheim. While I was in Dresden, I met someone who rocks blue hair like me. Her name is Doreen Kaestner. here is a photo of me and Doreen.

And she gave me something. This bracelet. I'm not a Swifty, but I have a friendship bracelet now from Doreen from Dresden, and it says SAP Dresden on it. And I've worn it ever since. The only time I take it off is when I touch up my beard, which I need to do this weekend. But I don't want to get blue hair dye all over the bracelet. So that's the only time I take it off. Otherwise, it stays on. And it's not just about Dresden and Doreen. It's a reminder of the entire SAP community, the family I'm proud to be a part of.

So fast forward a few weeks. I'm down in the LATAM Roadshow in South America. I do a few events in Brazil and Lima, Peru. And then I go home because it's time for vacation. And I found myself with my family in Stockholm, Sweden. Out of nowhere, in old city near the water, someone shouts, Hey, I know you! You're from SAP. And I was like, yeah. I shook his hand and I said, hey, what's your name? He said, I'm Dorian Kaucher, DK, another DK, just like Doreen. Dorian works in a small office in southern Germany called Markdorf and focuses on sustainability initiatives. And when I asked if I could take a picture with him, he said, well, I need one, too, because I want to show all my colleagues back in the office that I met you.

Honestly it's it's crazy because you all make me so much better by being a part of this SAP community by showing up and by connecting but it's so flattering right the energy i get from being able to be recognized is awesome and i appreciate that but i wish i could remember all your names and all your initials when i meet you but these moments they matter they matter to me so know that i do keep them inside they really do matter so from Dresden to Stockholm June to August, all the way through the year, all the way through Latin America, all the time. I'm thinking about you and you give me so much energy. And I love being a part of this SAP community because of that and because of you. So I invite you, though, that if you need something, I can help you connect to other people. So for Dorian, if you want to connect with him and talk about sustainability initiatives and all the great work him and his team are doing down in Markdorf, let me know. And if you need help from Doreen with some development, she's over in Dresden and if she can't help you with her SAP skills, maybe somebody else on the team can, she'll help connect you. I love being a connector, and other people can then connect others from that. So it's a great thing being a part of this SAP community, online and in person.

And speaking of online, Devtoberfest starts the last week of September. So I hope you're registered, and we'll see you online for that for four weeks. And then on November 4th, we're going to be online and in person for SAP TechEd. We're going to be in Berlin November 4th through 6th as well as Louisville, KY the same dates with an on tour stop, and then some of us go the next week to Sydney, Australia and after that a couple weeks later we're in Bengaluru, India.

So I promise with all of this happening I'll have more stories for you very soon. Thank you for reading, bye.
