Females live longer and grow larger than males. The IPHC age-structured stock assessment uses otolith (ear bone) samples from commercial and survey catches to determine age composition. A declining trend in the size and age of halibut at the same CPUE level indicates a younger, smaller average population — which is what was observed from 1990-2015.
