Adam was sixty cubits tall, but people have been decreasing in stature since then. He was created in the form and shape of today humans." muftis: shaykh: - name: Shaykh Abdul-Aziz ibn Baz url: /biography/binbaz/ --- ### Question: At the beginning of this episode, we return to the letter of the listener Hussein Ismail al-Aidarous, from Democratic Yemen, Hadramaut, Tarbah. Our brother—we presented some of his questions in a previous episode, and he has a collection of questions remaining. In this episode, he asks: **'I always read and hear that man was originally a monkey, then passed through several stages and transformed into the normal human known today. Is this reasonable or not? Furthermore, are the elements of a monkey—meaning the elements that make up its body—the same elements that make up the human body? Please advise us, and may Allah reward you with goodness.'** ### Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, his companions, and those who follow his guidance. To proceed: This claim mentioned by the questioner is a denounced and false statement. It contradicts the Book of Allah (the Qur'an), the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and the consensus of the Salaf (predecessors) of this Ummah. This claim became famous through the individual named Darwin, and he is a liar in what he said. Rather, the origin of man is the origin of man in his known state; his origin was not a monkey nor anything else. Instead, he is a sound, rational human being whom Allah created from clay—from dust. He is our father, Adam (peace and blessings be upon him). Allah created him from dust, as He, the Majestic and Exalted, said: **'And indeed We created man (Adam) out of an extract of clay (water and earth).'** [Al-Mu’minun: 12]. So, he was created from this dust. Allah created him in His image, his height being sixty cubits into the sky, and then creation continued to decrease [in height] until now. He was created with this description that we witness today. His children are like their father—created in the form of their father. They have hearing, sight, intellects, and the stature known to them now. They stand on their legs, they speak, hear, and see, and they take and give with their hands. They are not in the form of monkeys, nor is their composition that of monkeys. Rather, they have a specific composition, and monkeys have a specific composition. And thus it is for every species; monkeys are an independent nation, pigs are an independent nation, and likewise with dogs, donkeys, cats, and others—they are all nations. As Allah said: **'There is not a moving (living) creature on earth, nor a bird that flies with its two wings, but are communities like you. We have neglected nothing in the Book, then unto their Lord they (all) shall be gathered.'** [Al-An'am: 38]. All these communities will be gathered to Allah; they will be brought together on the Day of Resurrection, and justice will be settled between them. Then it will be said to them: 'Become dust,' and they will become dust—except for the Jinn and mankind. For those two, there is a different matter: they will be held accountable and recompensed for their deeds. Whoever obeyed their Lord shall go to Paradise, and whoever disbelieved in Him shall go to the Fire. As for these other animals, they are independent communities. Monkeys are an independent communities with their own unique creation, origin, and characteristics. Pigs are likewise, as are dogs, donkeys, camels, cows, and sheep. And so it goes—communities with their own creation and distinct features upon which Allah, the Sublimely Purified, established them. He is the All-Wise, the All-Knowing, and He is most discerning of the intricacies of their affairs and the minute details of their composition. He is most discerning of this and the All-Knowing, Glorified and Exalted be He. However, the servant [of Allah] must believe that the creation of Adam is different from the creation of monkeys, and that Adam's origin is the same origin he is upon now. His origin was not a monkey or anything else; rather, he is a sound human being according to his witnessed creation. Thus, claiming that his origin was a monkey is a denounced and false statement—in fact, if it were said that the one who holds this view is a disbeliever, that would be a valid position. What is most apparent—and Allah knows best—is that whoever says this, while knowing what the Sharia has established, would be a disbeliever. This is because he is calling Allah and His Messenger liars, and denying the Book of Allah regarding the creation of Adam.
