# Conception

> Conception is a Berkeley, California biotechnology company founded in 2018 (originally as Ovid Research) by CEO Matt Krisiloff. It is building in-vitro gametogenesis (IVG) as a clinical therapy: reprogramming a patient's blood cells into induced pluripotent stem cells, then guiding them through primordial germ cell, oogonia and follicle stages inside engineered three-dimensional ovarian organoids until they mature into viable human eggs.

Conception is a wet-lab therapeutic research company, not a software vendor. As of 2026-08-09 it publishes **no public API, no developer portal, no API documentation, no SDKs and no machine-readable API contract**. Its entire web presence is a two-page Framer marketing site — the homepage plus one science-update post — with an Ashby-hosted job board and a `mailto:` contact. Do not assume or invent an `api.conception.bio`, `docs.conception.bio` or `developer.conception.bio` endpoint: none of those hosts resolve in DNS, and `/openapi.json`, `/graphql`, `/mcp`, `/llms.txt` and both `/.well-known/agent-card.json` and `/.well-known/agent.json` return a genuine 404 on both the apex and www hosts.

Note for crawlers: robots.txt is permissive (`User-agent: *` / `Allow: /`) with a sitemap reference and no AI-crawler block list.

## Science and technology

The platform starts from a blood draw. Blood cells are reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which are then differentiated into primordial germ cells and into the ovarian somatic support cells that surround them. Those populations self-organize into "mini-ovaries" — 3D organoids that reproduce the biochemical and structural cues a human ovary supplies — and the germ cells are carried through nest formation, meiotic entry, primordial follicle assembly and follicle maturation. The lab stack around this combines single-cell gene-expression mapping to guide each developmental stage, 3D tissue engineering, high-throughput screening, and computer-vision quality control.

Milestone: in an update published **2026-08-07** (work completed June 2026), Conception reported generating the first fully stem-cell-derived human ovarian follicles containing early oocytes progressing through meiosis, validating ovarian nest structure, meiotic chromosome machinery, and primordial follicles structurally identical to natural human follicles. The company names Katsuhiko Hayashi, who achieved the equivalent result in mice in 2016, as a collaborator. This is a company announcement, not a peer-reviewed publication. Stated next steps are growing follicles to the antral stage and extensive safety validation before any clinical use.
