# Azure Data Factory > Azure Data Factory is Microsoft's cloud data-integration service: it orchestrates and automates > the movement and transformation of data across ETL and ELT workloads spanning cloud and > on-premises stores. Its public API is the Microsoft.DataFactory resource provider behind Azure > Resource Manager — 104 operations over 75 paths at api-version 2018-06-01, managing factories, > pipelines, datasets, linked services, data flows, triggers, integration runtimes, credentials, > managed private endpoints and change data capture resources. Generated by API Evangelist on 2026-09-17 from artifacts in this repository. Microsoft publishes no llms.txt of its own: https://learn.microsoft.com/llms.txt returned HTTP 404 and https://portal.azure.com/llms.txt returned HTTP 200 serving an HTML application shell, which is a soft-404, not a document. Both probes are recorded in llms/microsoft-azure-data-factory-llms-probe.yml. ## What you need to know before calling it - Base URL: https://management.azure.com - Every request MUST carry `?api-version=2018-06-01`. Omitting it returns HTTP 400 `MissingApiVersionParameter` before any resource logic runs. - Auth is OAuth 2.0 against Microsoft Entra ID, audience `https://management.azure.com/`, one delegated scope `user_impersonation`. There are no API keys. What a caller may do is decided by Azure RBAC role assignment on the factory, not by token scope. - Errors use the Azure `CloudError` envelope `{"error":{"code","message","target","details"}}`, not RFC 9457 problem+json. - Lists return `{"value":[...],"nextLink":""}`; follow `nextLink` verbatim. Run history is queried with POST filter bodies returning a `continuationToken`. - Nine operations are long-running: they return 202 and you poll the `Azure-AsyncOperation` header (falling back to `Location`) honouring `Retry-After`. - Throttling is Azure Resource Manager's regional token bucket. On 429 read `Retry-After`; on every response read `x-ms-ratelimit-remaining-subscription-reads` / `-writes` / `-deletes`. - There is NO idempotency key. 12 CreateOrUpdate operations accept an `if-match` ETag; the POST action surface has no replay protection. `Pipelines_CreateRun` called twice starts two runs and bills both — dedupe on the returned `runId` yourself. - There is no dry-run or validate-only mode anywhere in the API. ## Specification - [OpenAPI (per-tag, 25 documents, 104 operations)](openapi/): OpenAPI 3.0.3, converted from the Microsoft Swagger 2.0 source - [Provider source contract (verbatim Swagger 2.0)](openapi/_original/microsoft-azure-data-factory-datafactory-2018-06-01-swagger.json): 1.27 MB, 75 paths, 1,199 definitions, published by Microsoft in Azure/azure-rest-api-specs - [Request/response examples](examples/): 112 example documents published by Microsoft alongside the contract, one or more per operation ## Docs - [REST API reference](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/rest/api/datafactory/) - [Product documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/data-factory/) - [REST quickstart — create a data factory](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/data-factory/quickstart-create-data-factory-rest-api) - [What's new (changelog)](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/data-factory/whats-new) - [Pricing](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/data-factory/data-pipeline/) - [Azure status](https://azure.status.microsoft/en-us/status) ## Resources in this repository - [Authentication](authentication/microsoft-azure-data-factory-authentication.yml) - [OAuth scopes](scopes/microsoft-azure-data-factory-scopes.yml) - [API conventions, idempotency and reversibility](conventions/microsoft-azure-data-factory-conventions.yml) - [Error catalog](errors/microsoft-azure-data-factory-problem-types.yml) - [Rate limits](rate-limits/microsoft-azure-data-factory-rate-limits.yml) - [Plans and pricing (probed from the Azure Retail Prices API)](plans/microsoft-azure-data-factory-plans-pricing.yml) - [Lifecycle, versioning and deprecation](lifecycle/microsoft-azure-data-factory-lifecycle.yml) - [Changelog](changelog/microsoft-azure-data-factory-changelog.yml) - [Data model](data-model/microsoft-azure-data-factory-data-model.yml) - [CLI (az datafactory)](cli/microsoft-azure-data-factory-cli.yml) - [SDK packages](packages/microsoft-azure-data-factory-packages.yml) - [Conformance](conformance/microsoft-azure-data-factory-conformance.yml) - [Well-known documents](well-known/microsoft-azure-data-factory-well-known.yml) - [Agent skills](skills/_index.yml) - [MCP candidate tool list](mcp/microsoft-azure-data-factory-mcp.yml) ## SDKs - npm `@azure/arm-datafactory` 20.0.0 (2026-07-08) - PyPI `azure-mgmt-datafactory` 10.0.0 (2026-07-08) - NuGet `Azure.ResourceManager.DataFactory` 1.11.1 (2026-06-05) - Maven `com.azure.resourcemanager:azure-resourcemanager-datafactory` 1.2.0 (2025-05-27) - Go `armdatafactory/v9` v9.1.0 (2024-12-13) - RubyGems `azure_mgmt_data_factory` 0.18.7 (2021-02-26) — abandoned, Azure SDK for Ruby retired ## Optional - [Azure Data Factory Studio (console)](https://adf.azure.com/) - [Azure portal](https://portal.azure.com/) - [Samples repository](https://github.com/Azure/Azure-DataFactory) - [Product blog](https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/category/analytics/blog/azuredatafactoryblog) - [Community Q&A](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/tags/194/azure-data-factory) - No MCP server exists for Data Factory.
