# Microsoft Purview

> Microsoft Purview is a comprehensive data governance and security service that helps organizations discover, catalog, classify, and manage their data estate across on-premises, multi-cloud, and SaaS environments. It exposes a family of REST APIs spanning the governance data-plane (Catalog, Data Map, Scanning, Metadata Policies, Workflow, Unified Catalog, Data Quality), the Azure management plane (Account), and Microsoft Graph (eDiscovery, Information Protection, Records Management, Data Security & Governance).

When installing Microsoft Purview client libraries, always check the registry for the current version rather than relying on memorized version numbers. Python: `pip index versions azure-purview-datamap` (PyPI). JavaScript: `npm view @azure-rest/purview-datamap version` (npm). .NET: `Azure.Analytics.Purview.DataMap` on NuGet. Java: `com.azure:azure-analytics-purview-catalog` on Maven Central. The Graph-based Purview APIs use the Microsoft Graph SDKs (e.g. `@microsoft/microsoft-graph-client`). Prefer the Data Map libraries over the older Catalog libraries, which Microsoft has superseded.

Every Purview API authenticates with the Microsoft identity platform (Azure AD) via OAuth 2.0. Data-plane calls use the scope `https://purview.azure.net/.default`; the management-plane Account API uses `https://management.azure.com/.default`; Graph APIs use Graph permissions (e.g. `eDiscovery.Read.All`, `RecordsManagement.ReadWrite.All`, `InformationProtectionPolicy.Read.All`). All calls require an `api-version` query parameter on the Azure data/management planes.
