# Numverify API

> Numverify is a free and simple REST API for national and international phone
> number validation and lookup, covering 232 countries. A single validate call
> returns whether a number is valid plus its local and international formats,
> country, location, carrier, and line type (mobile/landline). Numverify is an
> APILayer product, an Idera, Inc. brand.

Authentication is by API key. Two published base URLs exist:
- Legacy: https://apilayer.net/api — key passed as `?access_key=YOUR_KEY`
- Marketplace: https://api.apilayer.com/number_verification — key passed as the `apikey` request header

## Core operation
- GET /validate — validate a phone number. Params: `number` (required),
  `country_code` (2-letter ISO, required for national-format numbers),
  `format=1` (pretty JSON, legacy base). Returns: valid, local_format,
  international_format, country_code, country_name, location, carrier, line_type.

## Notes for agents
- Read-only lookup API; every plan is monthly-quota based (100 to 250,000
  requests/month). There are no write operations, webhooks, or streaming events.
- Errors use the APILayer envelope: {"success": false, "error": {"code",
  "type", "info"}} on the legacy base; a {"message": ...} object on the
  marketplace base.
