Customers want a second factor on their accounts. A large prospect wants their employees to log in with the company's own system. Security wants to know what happens when someone tries a thousand passwords in a row. None of that is what your product is for, and every piece of it is easy to get wrong. [Auth0](https://apis.io/providers/auth0/) handles this through an API, a way for software to talk directly to other software, so your product, your admin tools or an AI assistant can set up and run sign-in for you. ## What Auth0 does Auth0, now part of Okta, is an identity platform. It handles authentication, which is proving someone is who they say they are, and authorization, which is deciding what they are allowed to do once they are in. It does this for applications, for APIs and, more recently, for AI agents. Under the hood it speaks the standards your customers' IT teams will ask about, including OpenID Connect, OAuth 2.0, SAML 2.0 and SCIM, the protocol for creating and removing user accounts automatically. Alongside its main Management API it offers a My Account API for users managing their own settings, a My Organization API for business customers managing their own setup, fine-grained authorization, and a product line called Auth0 for AI Agents. More on the [Auth0 website](https://auth0.com/). ## What you can get done APIs.io maps Auth0 to 10 business capabilities. These are the ones most teams reach for first. ### [Identity & Access Management](https://apis.io/capabilities/identity-access-management/) This is the core of it, with 202 operations behind it: users, roles, sessions and multi-factor authentication, or MFA, the second check such as a code on a phone. Offering MFA is often what gets you through a customer's security review, and letting users manage their own factors keeps those requests out of your support queue. - `POST /mfa/associate` enrolls a new authenticator, such as a one-time code app or a phone number. - `POST /mfa/challenge` asks the user to prove themselves with that second factor during login. - `GET /mfa/authenticators` lists the factors a signed-in user has set up. - `DELETE /mfa/authenticators/{AUTHENTICATOR_ID}` removes one the user no longer has. - `POST /roles` creates a role, a named bundle of permissions you can hand to people. ### [Tenant Identity Federation](https://apis.io/capabilities/tenant-identity-federation/) Enterprise single sign-on, or SSO, lets a customer's employees log in with their company account. The usual cost is an engineer on a call with the customer's IT team. Self-service profiles let the customer configure it themselves through a guided setup. - `POST /self-service-profiles` creates a profile your business customers use to configure their own SSO. - `GET /self-service-profiles` lists the profiles you have set up. - `PATCH /self-service-profiles/{id}` changes one, for example the branding shown in the setup flow. ### [Threat Detection & Response Management](https://apis.io/capabilities/threat-detection-response-management/) Login pages attract bots, password guessing and people reusing passwords that leaked somewhere else. These settings are how you turn up the defenses without writing that code yourself. - `GET /attack-protection/bot-detection` shows what bot detection level your account is using. - `PATCH /attack-protection/breached-password-detection` turns on checks for passwords known to have leaked. - `PATCH /attack-protection/brute-force-protection` changes how many failed attempts block an account. ### [Authorization for Apps](https://apis.io/capabilities/authorization-for-apps/) Once someone is in, your own backend needs to know what they may touch. Registering your API with Auth0 means it can receive access tokens, the short-lived passes that say who is calling and with what permissions. - `POST /resource-servers` registers your backend API so it can receive access tokens. - `GET /resource-servers/{id}` shows an API's settings, such as how long its tokens last. - `PUT /stores/{store_id}/assertions/{authorization_model_id}` saves expected allow and deny results, so you can test fine-grained permission rules before they go live. ### [Webhook & Event Subscription Management](https://apis.io/capabilities/webhook-event-subscription-management/) Sign-ups, logins and account changes are events other systems care about, from your CRM to your security monitoring. Event streams send them out as they happen. - `POST /event-streams` starts streaming account events to a webhook or to EventBridge. - `PATCH /event-streams/{id}` changes a stream, including pausing it without deleting it. - `GET /event-streams/{id}/deliveries` shows the delivery history, including which events failed. ## Workflows that put it together A workflow is a recipe of several calls made in order to finish a real job. APIs.io catalogs 19 for Auth0, and many of them cover selling to businesses, where each customer is an organization with its own members and login setup: - [Create Organization and Add Members](https://apis.io/arazzos/auth0/auth0-create-org-add-members-workflow/) sets up a new business customer and adds their existing users. - [Create Organization, Attach Connection and Invite a User](https://apis.io/arazzos/auth0/auth0-create-org-connection-and-invite-workflow/) connects a customer to a login method and invites someone to sign in through it. - [Create Organization, Add Member and Assign Member Roles](https://apis.io/arazzos/auth0/auth0-create-org-assign-member-roles-workflow/) gives a new member the right permissions inside their own organization. - [Create Client, Create Connection and Enable](https://apis.io/arazzos/auth0/auth0-create-client-create-connection-enable-workflow/) registers a new application and switches on a way to log in to it. - [Create API, Role and Bind Permissions](https://apis.io/arazzos/auth0/auth0-create-resource-server-role-permissions-workflow/) registers your API, creates a role and ties the API's permissions to that role. ## Ask for it in plain language Our conversational overlays for Auth0 map everyday questions to the operation that answers them, so an AI assistant knows which call answers which question. These are the kinds of things you can ask: - "How do I trigger an SMS or push MFA challenge during login?" - "How do I let my business customers configure their own enterprise SSO?" - "How many failed login attempts trigger brute-force protection?" - "How do I turn on breached password detection?" - "Which events failed to deliver on my event stream this week?" APIs.io holds 72 of these overlays for Auth0. You can browse one in the [Auth0 Actions API phrasing overlay](https://apis.io/overlays/auth0/auth0-actions-api-phrasing-overlay/). ## Getting started Auth0 is freemium with self-serve signup, and it comes as open core, meaning an open source project alongside a commercial hosted product. Your developers will want the documentation for the [My Account API](https://auth0.com/docs/api/myaccount) and the [My Organization API](https://auth0.com/docs/api/myorganization), and the guide to [tokens](https://auth0.com/docs/secure/tokens), which is how your software proves who it is and what it may do. If you are building AI agents that act for your users, look at [Auth0 for AI](https://auth0.com/ai). On APIs.io, see the [Auth0 profile](https://apis.io/providers/auth0/), the [My Account API](https://apis.io/apis/auth0/auth0-my-account-api/), the [My Organization API](https://apis.io/apis/auth0/auth0-my-organization-api/) and the [Attack Protection API](https://apis.io/apis/auth0/auth0-attack-protection-api/). Before anyone on your team starts building a login system, have them list what your customers will ask for and price this against it.
