However, as a company grounded in science, we also want to ensure that labeling our product as non-GMO doesn’t contribute to blanket fears and misunderstandings of GMOs in general. Just as we aim to steward the term probiotics, there are scientists and researchers working to steward the field of synthetic biology and bioengineering towards applications that can save many lives (i.e. insulin—without genetic engineering we would not be able to meet demand) and ensure humanity’s survival on this planet, while protecting the planet itself (i.e. genetically engineered bacteria that can create biomaterials to replace plastic or produce biofuels affordably, efficiently, and sustainably). Probiotics, in general, do not appear to pose any safety concerns for pregnant and lactating individuals. The current literature does not indicate an increase in adverse pregnancy outcomes when probiotics are used by healthy individuals.

Our jar is designed to protect your DS-01®, so your capsules should be stored in it. Consistent daily intake is most important. Note that it can be normal to experience some mild gastrointestinal discomfort while first acclimating to a new and potent probiotic, such as DS-01®. In fact, an immediate physiological reaction is a sign that our probiotics are viable and attuning to your system as they move through your gastrointestinal tract. This in mind, we suggest taking 1 capsule daily for the first three days before moving to two capsules daily on day 4 (or when you're ready).

It is normal to feel effects in the digestive tract in as little as 24-48 hours. Other longer term benefits like cardiovascular health and gut immune function may take longer, or you may not notice anything at all. That’s completely normal. As long as you continue your daily intake, those beneficial microbes are doing their work inside to program, sustain, and enhance your health.

Additionally, upper limits are not currently indicated for probiotic organisms.

But for optimal results, daily intake is encouraged. This is because our probiotics are transient microbes, which journey through your colon (where the majority of your microbiome resides) to activate systemic benefits through programmed interactions with your existing bacteria and your body. That’s why continuous, daily intake is important using clinically and scientifically studied strains and dosages.
- [Can I take just one capsule of DS-01® daily?](https://help.seed.com/en-US/ds-01-one-capsule-2006078.md): Benefits for probiotics are assessed at both a strain and dosage level. Therefore, ideally, we recommend taking the full daily dose of 2 capsules of DS-01® at 53.6 Billion AFU, because this is our research-derived dosage and the dosage at which DS-01® is being evaluated in clinical trials. That said, please feel free to experiment with your dosage of DS-01® if this feels better for your ecosystem.
- [Do I need to refrigerate DS-01®?](https://help.seed.com/en-US/ds-01-refrigeration-2006079.md): The short answer is no. No refrigeration necessary. It’s a question we receive often, since many probiotics are sold in the refrigerated section at grocery stores and retailers. However, contrary to perishable food products, refrigeration doesn’t mean "freshness" or superiority. In fact, if a probiotic does not survive at ambient temperature outside of the refrigerator, it can reflect weak stability of the product, low viable organism count, or inadequate overages in formulation. If your home is consistently warmer than 79° F for extended periods, consider refrigerating in an oxygen tight container to avoid exposure to moisture.
- [How long should I take DS-01®?](https://help.seed.com/en-US/how-long-2006080.md): Probiotics, in general, are transient microbes—which means they encourage local and systemic benefits as they travel through the digestive tract interacting with immune cells, gut cells, dietary nutrients, and existing microbes along the way before eventually exiting the body. Science has demonstrated that the benefits conferred by these transient organisms are confined to the duration of consumption or shortly thereafter, which indicates that their benefits are dependent on continuous use. Therefore, if sustained benefits are desired, continuous, daily intake is important. Due to the importance of consistency, we offer DS-01® Daily Synbiotic on a subscription basis.
