# Understory

> Understory is an insurtech company in Madison, Wisconsin (founded 2012) that combines its own network of ground-truth "Dot" weather sensors with a proprietary weather risk model to underwrite parametric insurance against severe weather — including hail coverage for automotive dealership open lots and agricultural weather risk. Payouts are triggered automatically when sensors detect qualifying weather, bypassing the traditional claims process. Understory publishes no public API, developer portal, or documentation; its UnderstoryOS platform (broker management, pricing/quoting, automated weather-based claims) is offered to insurance partners, not as a self-service developer product.
