Are you ready for the year 2000?
For the last several decades, computer programmers have designated years by the
last two digits. For example, 1975 was designated by the number 75. This was done to save
electronic storage space and reduce operating costs. In such a format, however, the year
2000 is indistinguishable from the year 1900. Software and systems experts nationwide are
concerned that this could cause systems to malfunction in unforeseen ways, or to fail
completely. This problem has been dubbed the "millennium bug," or the "Y2K
bug."
