INTERVIEWING TECHNIQUES
(Grades 7 - 12)

LESSON PLAN                    SPEAKER'S BUREAU

Time: Approximately One Hour

OBJECTIVE

Given materials presented in lecture and demonstration, students will acquire appropriate job interview skills as evidenced by results of interviewing checklist completed by peers.

ACTIVITIES

1. Set induction:

Approach three different students in the class, each time offering an outstretched hand and stating, "It's nice of you to be here today. I'm Ms. Whateveryournameis." Announce to the class: "In the 10 seconds or so that it takes to shake hands with someone and introduce yourself, you create a first impression that will possibly be permanent and impossible to change. Today we are going to learn the job interview skills that will make a positive first impression."

2. Handshaking activity:

Explain do's and don'ts of correct handshaking. Have students form a "receiving line". Let the students file past you shaking your hand. Correct improper techniques as they occur and offer tips on how to improve technique.

3. Lecture/Discussion:

Explain correct interviewing techniques including proper preparation for the interview. (15 minutes) Allow students to make comments and ask questions.

4. List creation:

Appoint a volunteer student to write on the board. Ask the remainder of the class to offer suggestions for interviewing "do's and don'ts" which the volunteer will record on the board.

5. Role play:

Appoint two volunteer students to act as interviewer and interviewee. Supply the interviewer with a list of prearranged questions. Provide the non-participating students with an interview checklist which they will complete anonymously as the mock interview is performed. Conduct a mock interview.

Evaluation

Collect completed checklists from students in the "audience" after role play is complete. Announce the results of the peer evaluation. If time permits, conduct a second mock interview using different volunteers.
