Staff Development Courses

Summer FY2000

The following courses have been approved for staff development credit and stipends (where indicated) provided proper application procedures are followed. Registration for the courses listed below or for RESA courses must be received in the Staff Development Office for approval prior to the beginning date of the course. Registration for GYSTC courses may be sent directly to Cathy Wright at Shenandoah. Registration for other types of staff development courses must also have prior approval. All applications for stipends must be received in the Staff Development Office prior to the beginning of the course. Call the instructor or Pat Nixon for further information before registration if times, locations, etc. are listed as TBA. The information must be listed on the application form. Applicants will be notified only if the course is cancelled. Applicants are expected at the first day of the course unless they have notified Pat Nixon of their withdrawal.  SD200013 Interdisciplinary Approach to Authentic Science for Middle and Elementary Teachers: The course uses the scientific method as a springboard to a variety of interdisciplinary lessons and activities. Science experiments that emphasize the collection and interpretation of data will be modeled by instructor(s) as a guide for similar development by participants. Activities are correlated to elementary and middle school QCC objectives in science, math, language arts, and social studies. Teachers are encouraged to become familiar and comfortable with scientific topics and concepts that may be extended into other disciplines. A network of participants will be established and maintained through e-mail and internet bulleting boards and synchronous chat sessions in order to continue to develop and share ideas and information throughout the school year. SD200045 Curriculum Mapping II: Continued examination of spiral curriculum. Using test results and benchmark results to define emphasized and de-emphasized concepts. Instructor: Kristen Berryman

SD200049 Title I Solutions & Updates for Excellence: There will be a variety of seminars to meet the needs of the Title I teachers and teaching assistants. Participants may choose which seminars to attend based on their particular needs. The seminar topics will cover those areas of need identified in the May '99 Survey of Title I Staff: Diagnosing Math or Reading Problems, Helping Students Become More Self-Directed, Remedial Reading or Math Instruction, Improving Student's Self-Concept, and Writing a School-Wide Plan.
