BSU.NET Dial-Up Configuration Instructions
System Requirements:
In order to use Windows 95 or Windows 98 Dial-Up Networking with the BSU.NET dial-in
system, you must have a PC that meets the following system requirements:
- 486/DX or greater IBM compatible PC
- 8MB of memory (16MB recommended)
- Windows 95/98
- 14400 Kbps or faster modem (28,800 Kbps or high recommended)
Installation Procedure:
1. Install Dial-Up Networking
Open the "My Computer" icon on the Desktop to see if you
have Dial-Up Networking already installed. If you do, skip this step and go to Step
2. If you do not, continue with this step.
- Have your Windows 95/98 CD on hand
- Click on the Start button, Settings,
then click on Control Panel
- Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon
- In the Add/Remove Programs Properties box, click on the Windows
Setup tab
- Click on Communications (not on the Checkbox) to
select it. Then click the Details button
- Click on the check box next to Dial-Up Networking so
it is checked, and then click OK.
- You may be prompted to insert your Windows95/98 CD to complete the
installation and you'll
be asked to restart your computer at this point.
2. Installing the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol
- Click on the Start button, click Settings,
then click on Control Panel
- Double-click on the Network icon
- Look at the list to see if the following components are listed:
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- Dial-Up Adapter
- TCP/IP > dialup adapter
- If any or all of these are missing, click on the Add...
button
in the Network window for each one that you need to install
- In the Select Network Component Type box, double-click on
Adapter
- In the Select Network Adapter box scroll down the list on the
left-hand side and click on Microsoft, then on the right-hand
side double-click on Dial-Up Adapter. You will then be returned
to the Network box.
- If you need to install another component, click on the Add
... button
- In the Select Network Component Type box, double-click on
Protocol In the Select Network Protocol box scroll down the
list on the left-hand side and click on Microsoft, then on the
right-hand side double-click on TCP/IP. You will then be returned
to the Network box.
- If you made any changes here, you may be prompted to insert your
Windows95/98 CD to complete the installation and you'll be asked to
restart your computer at this point.
- Skip the next step if you are unfamiliar with the
other clients and protocols listed!
- Remove any unnecessary clients and protocols by selecting them
from
the list of installed components and then clicking the Remove button.
3. Configuring Dial-Up Networking
- Double-click on the My Computer icon
- Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon
- Double-click on the Make New Connection icon.
This may launch the
Welcome to Dial-Up Networking wizard. If so, click Next to continue
- In the space where it asks you to name the connection, type BSU.NET
- Make sure that your modem is listed in the Select Modem drop-down
box, and then click Next.
- Enter area code 208 if you are calling outside the Boise calling
area, otherwise leave it blank.
- In the space where it asks you to enter the phone number, type
426-4983,
- Select United States of America (1) for the Country Code.
- Click Next, then click Finish to
return to the Dial-Up Networking
window. You should now see a new icon labeled BSU. NET
- If you want to create a desktop shortcut for this, right-click and
drag the
icon onto the desktop and select Create Shortcuts Here... from the
resulting menu.
- Dial-Up Networking installation and configuration is
now complete.
Connecting to the BSU.NET Dial-in Server:
1. Double-click the BSU.NET Dial-Up Networking icon from either
your desktop shortcut or the Dial-Up Networking window
2. Type your userid and password in the appropriate fields, and
click Connect.
3. You should now hear your modem dial out and connect to the BSU.NET. After it connects
for the first time, you may see a
dialog box stating that you are connected, and giving you the option to see this box every
time you connect. Follow the instructions
given in the box to select the option you want and close the box.
4. Open your web browser (Microsoft Explorer or Netscape
Navigator) and surf away!
Disconnecting from the BSU.NET Dial-in Server:
After you have closed your web browser (Microsoft Explorer or
Netscape Navigator), disconnect from BSU.NET by
following the instructions below:
- If you see a button in your Taskbar that resembles the BSU sample
below for the Dial-Up Networking connection.
Click on this button to restore the connection box, and then click on the Disconnect
button.

- If you see an icon of 2 computers in your System Tray (the area by
the clock), double-click on this icon to open the
connection box, then click on the Disconnect button.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO DISCONNECT AFTER YOU FINISH WITH YOUR
SESSION IN ORDER TO
FREE UP THE LINE SO OTHERS MAY USE IT!
