Ask your representatives to cosponsor worker verification bill

Congressmen Bill Barrett (R-NE) and Doug Bereuter (R-NE) have introduced legislation that would establish a national system to ensure that employers hire only those legally eligible to work in the United States.

The Legal Employment Authentication Program (H.R. 3429) would allow employers to voluntarily submit a worker's employment eligibility information to the INS. The immigration agency would then work with the Social Security Administration and Department of Labor to verify work eligibility, a process that should conclude within ten days. Senator Bob Kerry (D-NE) will introduce similar legislation in the Senate soon.

Write, call, or e-mail your Member of Congress and ask him or her to cosponsor H.R. 3429 because:

  • A national worker verification system will discourage illegal immigration. Preventing illegal aliens from taking jobs they should not have will reduce the incentive for illegal immigration.
  • A national worker verification system will protect employers. Clamping down on the thriving fake document industry will make it harder for illegal aliens to use fake documents to prove work eligibility.

    Current cosponsors of H.R. 3429:

    Rep. Bereuter, Doug (R-NE)
    Rep. Bilbray, Brian (R-CA)
    Rep. Latham, Tom (R-IA)
